- My journey to medical school in Australia from high school to an undergraduate degree in medical science to acceptance: I give an overview of my experiences of the medical school application process including the GAMSAT exam, medical school interview, portfolio and acceptance into medical school in Australia as well as all the ups and downs along the way.
More importantly, I share some of the lessons I’ve learnt from these experiences and hope this video will inspire and motivate those wishing to pursue medicine as a career.
Medical school is hard. Getting into medical school is hard, but I believe if you want something bad enough, you can make it happen. Dedication, hard work, persistence, resilience and patience all helped me achieve my dreams of becoming a medical student and future doctor and I hope my story helps you on your own path, in whatever discipline you choose to pursue.

I know the feels of losing motivation. For motivation, try to find a job in healthcare (if you don't have one already that is). Volunteer with St John Ambulance or do another activity that has a healthcare base or where you are assisting people in their health and I guarantee this will help with rebuilding motivation to study for the GAMSAT. Hoping for your sake that 4th time is the charm and good luck :).

Great observation and I’m also surprised by the number of HS students watching my content. If you have the opportunity and the marks to get into the Monash program 100% go for it!!! If it doesn’t happen know that there are lots of pathways and that medicine is a life long journey of learning but its totally worth it. Best of luck in your next few years of study :).

My pleasure. I hope that seeing me fail 7 times at GAMSAT helps you to overcome that fear. I was a credit/distinction average student in undergrad but managed to pull my socks up and work hard when it counted There is nothing to fear from simply sitting the GAMSAT exam. The worst that happens is you don’t do well but you also learn from experience and that’s still a win. If you don’t sit the exam then the overall outcome is still the same yet you learn nothing and you will always wonder what if. You have to try if it’s something you really want to do. Best of luck :)

I sat the GAMSAT recently with zero prep for the first time and got 58, don't know why I felt pretty hopeless after getting that score but your journey has really inspired me with the idea that GAMSAT is not about natural ability, but also about applying yourself and taking the time to practice and hone the skills required to score well. Hey, I'm a high school student in Year 12 currently sitting my HSC. I'm interested in getting into medical school but I did not study any sciences in year 12. Could you potentially give any advice as to how I can prepare myself or tips getting into medical school?
Hi Sylvia, to get into medical school straight out of highschool you will require a very high ATAR score. My atar was 87.65 so that wasn’t an option for me. Instead I did a university degree (bachelors degree) in medical science although you can do an undergraduate course (usually minimum 3years) and then you can apply for postgraduate medicine (an additional 4 years). For more information on postgraduate medicine you can go to the GEMSAS website. For more information on undergraduate medicine (medical school straight out of highschool) it might be worth talking to your career advisor at school if this is an option for you. As Medical science student, watch a lot good chemistry UA-cam clips that the professors don't teach you. Get a lot of help. and watch out for the exams.

Medical Science student here second year at Western Sydney University. I got into due to e doing Diploma of Pathology at TAFE, failed my anatomy unit and have to repeat.
Hey Dylan, I'm 15 (grade 10) and in august I will be selecting my subjects for year 11 & 12 , I am really interested in studying medicine, what subjects are necessary for me to study? I'm trying to get my head around all of this medical school & pathways stuff which is kind of confusing, if you could give me some guidance then it would be much appreciated.
Chemistry and maths methods are usually the prerequisites for medicine. Other than those two, choose subjects that you like and you reckon you’ll do good in.
first make sure you choose subjects that you enjoy that’s what counts the most second of all check the university your thinking of going to and make sure to note down the prerequisite subjects needed to enter the course your wanting to enter and thirdly maybe choose science and math based subjects to give you a little understanding of what studying medicine is like for example (chemistry, biology, psychology, math methods, math further) those are some key subjects that you will definitely be studying in medicine but then again please consider these three points when choosing each subject
Thanks for your comment and I agree with both Hambo and Sanshhgh, chemistry and maths methods being the most likely pre-requisites for most undergrad medical degrees. To add to Hambo’s comment it is important to select subjects that you will do well in as I’m sure you are aware that the ATAR cut off for undergraduate medicine is very high (usually >95 from what I’ve seen). Please also keep in mind that if you don’t achieve this very high score that there are still pathways to medicine after completing an undergraduate degree at university (bachelors degree in science, arts, commerce, most 3 yr bachelors degrees) so don’t give up if it’s what you have your heart set on. I'm 16 in year 10 currently and have wanted to be a surgeon a very long time, I'm not exactly confident in myself that I will get an atar of 90 or above. Are there different options on how to get into medical school other that getting an high atar, are there ways around it to get into med school?

Hey Louka, the fact that you are thinking about medicine at 16 is something I wish I had done :P. I didn't get an ATAR above 90 and I did an undergraduate in medical science at a university that had a 90 ATAR cut-off. Other universities offered the same degree with a minimum ATAR of 65. You can enter any degree (science, arts, commerce) and try to do well to give yourself the best chance at apply for post graduate medical school. Post-graduate medical school is a 4-year course. It is still difficult to get into as i'm sure you can tell based on my video. There are lots of options and you will discover a lot about yourself on the journey. My advice to you is to keep asking questions about medical school, do as best as you can with school and university and don't let anyone tell you that you're not good enough. Best of luck :)

I'm currently graduating high school and I'm scared about what I want to do in Uni...I want to study forensic science but then I also want to study medicine....I'm torn lol + it's pretty difficult to maintain my ATAR atm so I don't think I'll achieve a high ATAR anymore :')
Stay positive and know that you don't have to have it all worked out in year 12. Plenty of time to explore different areas and ask lots of questions about different career pathways
You should be so super proud of yourself! This might sound crazy but im in year 9, 15 years old and i am really into studying medicine or just generally doing something do to with the human body as a job potencially. I really want to be able to achieve this and although i am really young i still want to know how atar scores and university works in order to be potencially become some sort of physician one day.
Hey Roni thanks so much for taking the time to write this! 15!!! Wow you are wayyyy ahead og the game. You have plenty of time to work all this stuff out but as a place to start look at undergraduate medical programs and the (UCAT exam) this is for med school straight out of year 12 (requires a very very good atar score). Otherwise if I were you I would get involved with St John Ambulance volunteers or maybe work at a pharmacy. These jobs will help get your foot in the door and begin to understand healthcare system more. Any job in healthcare would be a great first step. Good luck and thanks again

My pleasure. So, when you're in year 12 you can sit an exam called the UCAT (in america they sit the MCAT but we don't use that exam here in Australia). If you get a good UCAT score and a very high ATAR and interview well then once you finished year 12 you can apply to undergraduate medicine (usually a 5-6year uni degree). If you don't have that very high atar then during year 12 you can look for uni degrees (also called undergraduate courses). I did a bachelor's of medical science but there are heaps of different courses that you can do (arts, commerce, etc). These university degrees are usually 3 years long and after that you can apply for postgraduate medicine (because you have completed an undergraduate degree). The post graduate medical degree is only 4 years but total years at uni will be 7 because you have already completed an undergraduate degree before going to medical school. This is ideal for people that don't quite have the ATAR for undergraduate medicine straight out of year 12. Hope this all makes sense, it's a lot to process I know.
Also, I'm not sure what specialty I want to go into yet :P. Still deciding haha

How exactly does one get onto the path of becoming a doctor straight out high school? To apply to undergraduate medicine at perhaps WSU or UNSW I know u need the atar+UCAT+interview and then if u get in, after completing the 5-6 years, do u then still have to sit the GAMSAT and complete postgraduate medicine, or do u go straight to residency/intern?? Currently in yr 11, the end goal is to become a paediatrician but I’m lost with how to go about doing it. What’s the difference between undergrad and postgrad? And what’s the likely timeline you undergo in each?
So there are two main pathways:
1) finish year 12 -> undergraduate medicine (5-6yrs) -> junior doctor (intern 1 year) -> residency and then specialty programs (timeframe depends on what you choose + if you get into that program straight away. TOTAL = 5-6yrs to become a dr
2) Finish year 12 -> Complete an undergraduate bachelors degree (this could be a bachelor of science or arts or any undergraduate degree (usually 3-4yrs) -> GAMSAT exam -> Interview -> Postgraduate medical degree (4 years). TOTAL = 7-8yrs to become a dr
Please note that there are some slight variations for different universities but this should give you a general time frame for most situations.
You do not need to sit the GAMSAT exam if you have already completed undergraduate medicine.

@@DylanAppelqvist hi! for the first option, is it hard to get admitted into undergraduate medicine? what are the requirements? i'm from the philippines and here we have something similar to option 1, but it is extremely hard to get into cause you need to be part of the top 100 passers among 100,000 takers for the admissions test. and there's still an interview, so in the end only the top 80 will be selected. so yeah its really hard lol

I really sympathise with anyone doing their hsc this year, it’s definitely been a tough year for all. I applied to ND Sydney and Fremantle, UOW, ANU, Deakin and Griffith. This was mainly based on where I was most competitive based on my GAMSAT, GPA and portfolio combo. There were definitely difficult times where I doubted my abilities and where close friends questioned my abilities but I knew I could beat it, just took a lot of effort and persistence. At the end of the day I think you know your own capabilities and can rise to the occasion if you want something bad enough. Best of luck in finishing up the year :).

There are two pathways to becoming a doctor in Australia: Undergraduate medicine is usually a 5-6year degree for school leavers (e.g UNSW, UoA), Postgraduate medicine is 4 years and is only available to those that have completed a previous undergraduate degree (usually a 3year bachelors at university). Which ever pathway you take, for the purposes of becoming a doctor, they are both the same on completion. Physician training comes after a couple of years of being a doctor, you can look up basic physicians training for more details :). Hope this helps and good luck :)

Hey Ian, thanks so much for your question and sorry I didn’t get to you sooner (took a bit of time away from social media). Ultimately, I wanted to be part of diagnosis and treatment/management as well as health leadership which I think is best offered through completing a medical degree. To prep for section 3 it was honestly a lot of repetition and answering as many question i could get my hands on. then I would review my answers and go to youtube to watch Kahn academy videos to better understand the theory. How could you have studied differently to better improve your score ?
I have sat the Gamsat 3 times and as you described your experience, none of those were my best attempts. Starting from my first GAMSAT which I just casually showed up to to my third one where I did some practice questions and 2-3 essays. And that did improve my overall score but obviously not by much.
I want my 4th attempt and maybe 5th attempt to be THE GAMSAT. How should I approach this from your experience?
Meanwhile if I don’t get an interview for entry for next year, I am a bit hesitant to do honors as I don’t want to compromise my GPA! (6.75). I did a biochemistry major in my undergrad and research internship at a biotech company and realized I wasn’t a good fit for research (hence why not a perfect GPA).
Is starting a different bachelors too risky? I just don’t want to work for the GPA again 😂
While I want to do something challenging and interesting without the pressure while I continue attempting to get into Med, hopefully sooner than later.
khan khalifa hey mate, thanks for the comment and wow your GPA is really good 😱. If I were you I probably wouldn’t do an honours year if you’re not that keen on research. You could start a masters degree as this won’t affect your GPA and would be a good addition to your application (portfolio) if you choose to apply to a portfolio school. As for improving your GAMSAT score the only way that worked for me was sitting down everyday for about 2months (3-4hours a day) doing as many questions as I could find online and through the resources I had accumulated (Acer material, gold standard GAMSAT book, grad ready questions). You have to give yourself the best shot. If you want the 4th and 5th time to be the time then you gotta put in the hours and you will then know your true GAMSAT score. Took me too long to figure this out so hopefully this helps speed up your process 😊. Best of luck

This is a hard question to answer because it depends what path you want to take. There are a few options including going straight into medicine after highschool ATAR probably needs to be above 95-96 minimum and probably higher but if you don’t have that score don’t give up. I had an atar of 87 and took a different path involving a separate uni degree and then went to medical school. Keep an eye out for upcoming vids where I discuss this further as the process is a bit confusing 😊
@@FHD990 You need a very high ATAR to do Medical School straight from school, an ATAR of 90+ (depends on your University)
It’s possible with a low 80’s ATAR, however, you would need to do a bachelor’s degree after school instead of doing Medical directly. You would need other requirements aswell, for example, my University requires a bachelor’s degree of Biomedical sciences and a GAMSAT score of 55 or above. It’s definitely possible, but not guaranteed! Medical school is very competitive. Best of luck!

Hey Christoph, I'll be releasing a portfolio video very soon. As for choosing preferences I would select univeristies that you are most likely to be competitive at as your first preference and where you want to attend. I knew my GAMSAT score wasn't incredible and my GPA was middle to low so I put the portfolio universities (UNDS, UOW and UNDF) first. Not all universities are part of the GEMSAS consortium either. You might already be aware that for USYD and a number of other universities that you apply directly to them so this won't be a problem in terms of selecting preferences as they are separate systems. Remember also, you will only be offered one interview in the GEMSAS consortium and will receive an interview score (this doesn't necessarily mean you will end up at the school you interview at). Hi Ethan, apologies for a slow reply i took a break from YT. Whilst it is going to be a long journey my thoughts are you would first need to complete your year 10 and year 12 certificate, If that gives you a high enough ATAR then you could do a bachelors degree (3-4years) in a health field that you’re interested in e.g. nursing, pharmacy are great options and prepare you well for medical school. If your ATAR isn’t as high there are bridging courses available which can then allow you to go to university. From here you would sit the GAMSAT exam and apply to post graduate medical school. I’m not going to sugar coat it because I believe in being honest: it’s a long journey and highly competitive, however these are the steps. Keep in mind that at each milestone you are growing and there are amazing and rewarding careers that can come from continually improving yourself and upskilling. I hope this helps :)

Hi Janelle, the most important thing IMO for honours is to find a good supervisor (the project comes second) preferably someone that has had honours students before and knows what you need to do in order to achieve first class. Try to ask previous students about their supervisors and honours experience because it's highly variable and a bad supervisor can make for a long, hard year. Once you find a supervisor it's a matter of telling them that you wan't to get first class honours and asking them about what their expectations are for you to achieve that. Whilst they may not mark your final paper they will be able to provide good insights and whether or not they think your progress and project are up to standard. Honours projects are also a great way to develop research skills which are useful for a MD program and for further research during/after medical school. Best of luck :).

I think the guide suggests 1st yr uni chem and bio with yr 12 physics. Although the topics are so broad that the only way to assess the depth of knowledge you need would be to do practice questions set by ACER (this is the company that puts on the exam) and that will give you the best insight 😊. Hey Sandra, honestly I can’t remember exactly each year but it was something like (yr1: 5.9, yr2:5.5 yr3:5.9) this gave me a weighted score of about 5.75. After my undergraduate I did honours (7) which then bumped my gpa up to 6.3ish. If you really don’t want to do honours then I highly suggest you knuckle down this year and maximise your yr 2 and aim for HDs in everything next year. This isn’t going to require a slight increase in workload. It will likely require a completely focused year where med sci comes first. If it’s what you want you will make the sacrifices and put in the work necessary. I think it’s much easier to improve your gpa than it is to improve your GAMSAT and after you’ve finished your degree/honours there is little you can do to bump it up your gpa further so make this year and next count 💪🏼. Absolutely you can apply to post-graduate medicine after completing bachelor of nursing undergraduate. In fact, most 3-year undergraduate uni degrees qualify (definitely do no have to do undergraduate in medical science). If I could choose my undergraduate degree again I would probably have chosen physio, nursing or pharmacy based on my interests and I think they are all great careers in and of themselves :). They also provide you with a job when you finish your undergraduate degree so you can better support yourself (financially) when you are in medical school if that's what you choose to do :).

Hi Kansan, apologies for such a late response (I took a break from YT). The post graduate program is much more self directed IMO which i like. I can only speak from my own experience but I would say it is similar hours to a full time job. Many people hold down a part time job throughout medical school and it just depends on your own circumstances and capabilities with how much is too much (for most its about 10-15hours of work outside of med school). We have parents groups for those with kids that help support each other and the university is v supportive. Hey there and thanks for your comment. 1) if you have finished highschool you can apply to do undergraduate medicine (usually 6Years) but it depends on where you studied and there are specific pre-requisites that you need to clarify. I would look at universities that offer undergraduate courses and take international students (unsw is an example and they have lots of info on their website).
In terms of length of medical school it depends which pathway you take but I might make a video on this as it can be a bit confusing. Stay tuned. The same occurs with the cost of medical school $40000-$250000+ depending on the university and place that you receive. I’m not sure but I believe the international cost would likely be towards the upper end of this range and possibly more 😢.

I’m not sure about the application process for international students but if you are a high school student then you should look into UNSW or another university that offers undergraduate medicine. If you have already completed a degree at university then you should look into postgraduate medical courses and can then look into sitting the GAMSAT exam. Hi what exactly is the GAMSAT since I've only ever heard of the UCAT?
GAMSAT is the graduate medical school admissions test. It is the entrance exam for post graduate medicine in Australia and the UK as many universities have postgraduate medical courses (usually 4yrs). Typically, those sitting the GAMSAT have completed or have almost completed a 3-4yr bachelors degree at university (e.g. bachelors of science, arts, commerce, etc). Therefore, the postgraduate medical pathway typically takes 7-8yrs. This differs to the UCAT, which is typically taken by school leavers applying for undergraduate medical courses (usually 6yrs total). Hope this helps.

For most undergraduate medical programs in Australia UCAT is require (there are some exceptions).
For post graduate medicine GAMSAT is usually required.

@@Thetelevisionshowwithjess UCAT is about $200 yes. I did sit UCAT as it didn't exist here in Aus when I was in year 12. I also didn't have the ATAR score to get into medical school straight out of high school. I sat the GAMSAT exam whilst doing my undergraduate university degree (B medical science). GAMSAT costs $510 :(. They are expensive exams but necessary for entry into most medical schools. Note: You do not need to sit both. Look up the university you want to attend and see what they require first :).

When it comes to that time to choose I am willing to be open-minded in regard to the med school I choose. My question is should I limit myself to med school choices in Melbourne, or should I branch out and apply to med schools in other states?
I would not limit yourself. I’m not going to lie it is very competitive to get into medical school and whilst you might be a top performing student you are competing for very limited spots against lots of keen applicants. I would apply to schools all over Australia and when you get closer to the time you’ll realise that there are lots of places to choose from and you can rank them in an order that suits your preferences and also select medical schools that are looking for the qualities that most align with your own strengths. The best advice I can give to you now is to do your very best in your uni degree because it forms part of your application for post grad medical school. The better grades you get, the better chance you have. Shoot for those HD’s (high distinctions) 😊

Hey Zacc, it depends on each university but I applied to honours at UNSW (even though I did my undergraduate degree at ANU). Typically to get into an honours research year you need a Mid credit - distinction overall in your undergraduate degree (if you think you’re borderline on this I would enquire with the university). The best way to find a good supervisor is to go to the university website and looks up research projects (or search school of medical science SOMS). It requires a bit of investigation work and emailing a bunch of potential supervisors. Also, you can email individual researcher’s directly (this is what I did). A lot of senior researcher’s have supervised research students so don’t be afraid to reach out to them. Hope this helps

No problem. A good honours year can really bump up your GPA. Mine went from about 5.7 to 6.3. This was achieved by getting first class honours which is achievable for most that apply themselves in the honours year. Good luck :)

Hi Abeeha, thanks for your message. That's great that you want to pursue medicine. A good place to start finding information about the pathway to medicine is through the GEMSAS website. For post graduate medical school you can do any undergraduate bachelor's degree (minimum three years). Some popular degrees are B science, B Medical Science, B Pharmacy, B Physiotherapy, B Nursing but there are people who did B commerce in my medical degree now so just know that there are lots of options depending on your interests. Thanks for your comment and that's exciting that you are pursuing medicine :). For undergrad I would recommend choosing subjects that you are likely to do well in. My understanding is that the university cares more about your grades (GPA) than the subjects you take. That being said, it is probably nice to be familiar with science subjects (either biology, chemistry, physics) as these are topics in the GAMSAT exam and some background knowledge of the concepts can be helpful. Medicine has people from all sorts of backgrounds. I would choose what you enjoy and are good at. Hope this helps.

Hey Jemila, obvs without knowing your situation it’s difficult to say. My preference would be to move to nursing because you’ll get more hands on, learn great clinical skills and communication skills too. Most importantly though you’ll have a JOB! Too many degrees out there these days that don’t have great job prospects on the other end. I was so disheartened when I realised I couldn’t get a job with my undergraduate degree (apart from a research assistant gig) but I guess I thought I’d just go straight into med straight after medical science (this didn’t happen). I'm a pharmacist hoping to get into MedSchool. Any advice for someone who didn't get a great GPA but did a master's degree?
Pharmacy is a great background to have going into medicine (kinda wish i did it tbh). If you don't have a great GPA (Under 6 overall) there are two options IMO. 1) Apply for universities that use the GPA as a hurdle (some require a GPA of 5 (credit avg) as a hurdle and then they don't look at your GPA again, its all GAMSAT and Interview (e.g. USYD). This will likely require that you get a higher GAMSAT score (Avg GAMSAT score at USYD for 2019 entry was 68). 2) Complete an Honours research year and aim for first class honours (achievable for most). By getting first class honours you will receive a 7GPA for your final year of your undergraduate studies. GPA is calculated as the final 3 years of your undergrad degree. Therefore your GPA will likely improve significantly. Also, when I applied some universities gave bonus marks for Master's and PHd graduates (look into this on the GEMSAS website to see if this is still a thing). Cheers mate and best of luck

For graduate medicine you first need to go to university and complete an undergraduate bachelors degree in almost anything (usually a 3 year course but can be more). I really like physio, nursing and pharmacy as undergraduate degrees because you have a job waiting for you when you finish and you also have a great knowledge base to utilise in medical school. Remember, most people need to fund themselves when they are going through medical school so having a career prior to medicine in health will not only give you invaluable insight into the healthcare system but will also be rewarding careers in their own right and allow you to think about if medicine is what you want to do or if you want to continue in your chosen undergraduate career pathway. I chose medical science because lots of people that want to study medicine and don’t know what to study at university opt for this general degree but I don’t think it was the best choice (for me). Afterwards, I had very few jobs prospects except for research and it took me 3years after finishing my degree to get into medicine which meant I was working unskilled, low paying jobs as a uni graduate (not uncommon unfortunately). I will make a video explaining more soon so stay tuned and best of luck with finishing up your schooling in the next couple of years 😊. I’d recommend getting some experience working in health now if you can (e.g local pharmacy) anything that gets you an insight into the healthcare field.
