    Grindavik was one of my favorite day trips when I was serving at Naval Air Station Keflavik in 1979-80. Iceland never disappoints as a place to explore. Sad that the town is basically a wreck. Hope things stabilize enough for the fish processing to resume even if the towns folk can’t return.
    PS - We use to get fresh fish at Grindavik for the Friday and Saturday night fish fry at the USO on base. Highlight of the week in Winter.
    PS2 - Thanks for showing the town. Everyone focuses on the eruption and not enough on what the ground failure has done to a beautiful town. The lava berms are also interesting.
    PS3 - Thanks for making / posting video.

    I had never been in a police car either, until I was coming back to the NATO base from Reyk on New Years Morning 1997. Drove the whole 50km, my buddy passed out in the passenger seat and Keflavik cops got me at .07 at the base gate. Better there than in the US. Aside from that...my two years in Iceland were the best years I spent in the Navy.

    Brilliant content dude. For all the time and effort, we are glad they had an Icelander telling a story about the volcanic activity.
    Not some external media outlet trying to sensationalise the eruption.
    If the Civil Protection Agency had any sense they would allow local Media outlets, i.e. local UA-camrs and bloggers 'Just Icelandic, Hlidermenn etc access to tell a story on Icelandic life much better than a Newspaper editor with ulterior motives.
    The tourist industry is very important to Iceland, let the story of volcanic activity be told by local media, they are a trusted source.
    I find it difficult to get accurate information on the volcanic activity, and only trust local sources. The volcanism affects them, as it does every Icelander.
    Every Icelander understands the danger visiting the active locations. If they misbehave, they never get back.

    Thank you Karl for the considerable effort you went through to get this footage. Really interesting to hear about the hoops you had to jump through to get access. And if it's any consolation, it's not just you that has problems with interference while flying their drone - Iceland FPV (aka Isak) frequently does too, although I guess you already know that. Take care and stay safe!

    • @TimeWarpIceland
      @TimeWarpIceland  Місяць тому

      Yes, this perhaps shows the difference between amateur and a professional. It's harder than it looks to fly close. My drone supposedly has a 5km range but I couldn't get anywhere near that. Also difficult because of a 60 Metre height restriction. I suspect Ísak gets permission to go higher on occasions to get there.

    Fascinating footage and information about this town. It's truly sad to see what's going on there. I feel really sorry for the people who were living there before. I've passed through Grindavik multiple times during the first eruptions in Fagradalsfjall in 2021, when I visited the volcano area 4 times. It looked like a very modern, well-organized, happy town. Back then, I was already scared something bad would happen to the town. The worst case scenario became reality. It's hard to imagine what's going on there.

I would love to be able to hike near the eruption when I’m there, but I grew up with stories of people who died from not taking the St Helen’s eruption seriously.
