Thank you for the tour. When I was in California, we would occasionally take a vacation on the Coast Starlight. Too bad they had a lounge car in place of the sleeper section lounge. I remember there used to be magicians and such entertaining in that car. I love the relaxed mode of travel, watching the scenery go by and getting to know my fellow travelers. It is a highly civilized method of travel.
As a kid I used to travel on the coast starlight from Albany to Seattle. I was always so curious about the full train. So awesome thank you so much for the FULL tour
Great tour of the Coast Starlight. I rode it 3 times, my favorite Amtrak route is the entire West Coast which the Pacific Surfliners/Coast Starlight/Capital Corridor/Cascades Corridor all share the entire West Coast Route of Amtrak. I will be setting up my N scale train sets in December. My main train set is the Coast Starlight and the other train set is the Southern Pacific Morning Daylight set with the Daylight steam locomotive 4449, that will be my excursion train set. Both trains will be run alternatively.
@@cartographer1977 I have ridden the Coast Starlight many, many times over the years, but not in about five years. I understand they no longer have the beautiful Pacific Parlour Car. Do they, though, have a lounge car in its place for Sleeping Car passengers only? I would hate to have to use that noisy Lounge Car that is for Coach passengers.
@@cartographer1977 That's such a shame! You pay so much for a Sleeping Car roomette that it should include at least a private lounge car! Without it, sleeping-car passengers must walk through all the sleeping cars and the dining car and a coach car or two to get to that noisy Lounge Car. Plus, I've seen people from Coach sleeping on the floor in there at night! Also, I met many fascinating people in that beautiful, quiet Parlour Car, people that I would never have met in the noisy Lounge Car! I met the former Deputy Prime Minister of Australia in the Parlour Car, Tim Fischer, on one trip, who, sadly, I heard on the news, passed away a couple of years ago. I spent a lot of time with him and his family. He was a train enthusiast who brought me out on the tracks at one of the stops to measure the trestles to prove to me that the gauge was identical to that in England. He was a highly articulate, erudite man who knew more about American politics than most Americans. He said he watches what our country does. He said it's very important to the world what America does. I've rarely met anyone that intelligent and knowledgeable. In the noisy crowded Lounge Car, I doubt that I would have met him. All he wanted to do was talk politics. His wife told me to excuse her husband. She said that he recently retired from politics. That's when I learned that he was the former Deputy Prime Minister of Australia. We wound up staying at the same hotel. I was in the computer room googling him when he walked in. It became kind of like an "I Love Lucy" episode. His picture came up on the screen, and I kept standing in front of the screen because I didn't want him to see that I had been reading about him. (lol) Another time, I met Susan Hayward's cousin in the Parlour Car. I sat on the sofa talking to her for three hours asking her every Susan Hayward question I could think of. Another time, I met a Marine who worked at the Pentagon in Washington. I told him that it must be fascinating work! He said, "No. Actually, it's rather boring." Then, another time I was talking to a violin salesman who told me he had a million dollars' worth of violin bows in his room. Another time, Charlie Sheen's attorney was on the train in the Parlour Car. The only reason I knew that was because his wife told me. She told me she felt like "a mother" to that creep (my words, not hers). Another time, I met a well-known Hollywood director in the Parlour Car. This was sad because three months later, I heard on the news he had died of a heart attack. On another trip, I met some young college guys returning home for their spring break. One of them told me he had met Shari Lewis on one trip. She told him she often takes the Coast Starlight. He asked her if she had Lamb Chop with her. I was an English major in college, so I make notes and write about my experiences on the train. As one conductor said to me, every trip on the train is an adventure. I can vouch for that! I have all kinds of anecdotes from my years of ridding that train. My point in telling you this is that I doubt seriously that I would have met these people nor been able to have had long conversations with them had it not been for the private Parlour Car. I can't believe that Amtrak has no private car of any sort for sleeping-car passengers. They should since even the small roomette is very expensive.
I've taken the Coast Starlight from L.A.-to Sacramento, CA. A nice trip. Granted, it's a little slower than driving, but then you don't have to get off the train to use a bathroom, or stop for meals.
TAKE THE TRAIN TRIP! You will not be sorry and you will not want to fly ever again. My friend and I had more fun on our roundtrip train ride from Maricopa, AZ to Alexandria, VA. Now we are planning several other train trips. I'm a "take the scenic route" person.
Yes, it's first come first serve. There's not set time limit, but you are encouraged to give others a chance to enjoy the lounge. The lounge is usually only busy during the most scenic sections of the route.
Thanks for making this train video! I'm looking at taking the Coast Starlight in Biz Class. Is it just the same seats in Coach but more legroom and drinks included?
Somebody five a hand please, i am a mexican citizen, i will make a travel from Los Angeles to Sacramento, just few days, round trip, is that posible to leave my car en Union Station Los Angeles parking'? is that posible? any cost?
Those days are long gone. In addition to a complete ban on smoking aboard all Amtrak trains, Amtrak doesn't want passengers dwelling in between cars for safety reasons.
You're welcome. As far as I could tell, the Business Class Car is the same as a Coach Class Car. The difference is that it is located between the Dining Car and the Sightseer Lounge, so that it's separated from the other coach cars.
When I went from Arizona to Virginia, no one bothered our luggage on the luggage racks. I did not have locks on the luggage. My valuables stayed with me in my room. Computer, cash, phone, etc.
Thank you, finally a 'train video' where they are on the actual train, and not just showing the trains going through towns. Good JOB!
Thanks. :)
