Couldn't have said it better myself. People have to realise that they have to have a certain level of skill before attempting to hunt with a slingshot. Nothing is worse that an injured animal getting away, to suffer
That was probably the best advice I've ever heard given on slingshot hunting. I think too many people have this image of slingshots as being this weapon they had as a child that ultimately was rather inaccurate because they picked up whatever rock was lying on the ground and shot. At least in my generation, about every kid I ever met had a 'wrist rocket' they would mess with and soon either the bands would break or they'd get bored with it and it would end up on the bottom of the closet. What most people who aren't into slingshots don't know is just how very accurate they can be when you've taken the time to learn and practice. Especially how much more accurate they are than that old wrist rocket they had as a kid. What bothers me are comments like 'slingshots shouldn't be hunted with because they aren't accurate.' Well neither is a bow accurate unless you're practiced. I really wouldn't put being accurate with a slingshot any more difficult than being accurate with a bow. While the bow has the potential to take bigger game at much further ranges, both require the same practice to be an ethical hunter.
Wow excellent words! From a slingshot shooter! I know my range but don't hunt game I just use targets! Nuthn better than hitting a can of coke or beer can when its full! No Squirrel in Australia

Dear Friends: A .375 inch diameter lead ball weighs about 79 grains, a .433 diameter lead ball weighs about 122 grains. I'll leave it up to you to determine which ball has the flatter trajectory and is easier to hit with. Lead has the advantage over steel because you can easily cast your own ammo, which is fun and interesting in itself. It can be done over a wood fire with a single lead ball mold (a "bag" mold) and a small ladle (search "Track of the Wolf").
Great video I just bought a hunting slingshot Barnett Black Widow, but will probably not get past target practice to actual hunting for survival because I doubt I would ever be in that kind of emergency hunger situation. Great article. However, I had a question regarding the best type of ammo. Have you tried to find what your talking about (125 gr) online? Most of it is clay, steele, or glas, and far short of 125 - more like 54, at the most. Do you have a good resource that sells this lead ammo?

I am thinking of getting a Scout XT as my first ever slingshot. Are the bands included with this likely to be powerful enough for hunting, say, a rat at 10-15 m?
What are those bands on that slingshot? Also I have recently bought the rock chucker linatex bands and they are pretty good for rocks and hit hard with the 7/16 steel ammo I bought is this suitable for hunting?
Hi Nathan. You just reminded me I needed to order some longer bands for my Torque slingshot. A couple other things. If you can't hit a ping pong ball then I'd say you should hunt a lot more cuz you owe it to your game to give it the best chance of survival possible. ;-) And finally, I get a lot of satisfaction casting my own .36 cal lead ball sliingshot ammo.
The fact that the steel can ricochet is actually a good thing. Looking at physics we know that force occurs when changes in momentum occur. When the ammo hits the target it slows down to a stop, thus applying a force on the game. With lead. That would be it. So you need that force to be good. But when the steel bounces off it undergoes another change in momentum which applies another force to the animal. So you get the same initial force but with steel you get an extra "hit" essentially. Also in the case that you loose your ammo (lets be honest its difficult to find although you should try) steel will not poison the earth like lead will. As well as this if you did find your ammo the steel could be used again but the lead would need to be reformed. Steel is better than lead.
How can anyone dislike what this guy is saying?? 173 dislikes! Really? I agree with the whole video, maybe the people who don’t like it can’t shoot that accurately? 🤔🤔
Yo, Nathan. I have a question about the band set you use for hunting: What rubber do you use? What are the dimensions and how many layers of rubber are there?
Well i just dont like how much power comes from single bands, Or even double at the average width for that matter, so i used double bands from 7.25cm tapered to 5.25 on each side snd shoot 7-9mm steel balls with a leather hand guard to counter the hand slap. And oh my god does it fly fast.
Awesome content, Nathan. Only feedback is to give your viewers a diameter for 125 grain ammo in steel and lead, that might have been helpful. And to also recommend bands for an average draw length to hit 10 ftlbs @ 125 grain. Keep it up!
Of course, our website simple-shot.com is the source. However, finding lead these days will be difficult. We sold lead when we made this video, but it's no longer available. We do carry steel in every size you could want and practice/fun ammo. simple-shot.com/accessories/slingshot-ammo/ For hunting, the hammer is definitely king, but the Scout is a VERY popular hunting slingshot.
And if you're just wanting to have fun with learning the mechanics of slingshots (plinking) , raw chickpeas are cheap, fun, & bio-friendly, though not the best for learning aiming ballistics, as they're super lightweight.
a good target is small 1.5"/40mm cement discs, easily and cheaply made and they explode when you hit them, making a good indicator at range. to make the mold, just cut a 1.5" hole in a 2x2" or 3x3" piece of 3/4" plywood, sand the inside of the hole, screw the piece of plywood to a larger one tightly and you have a mold for the discs, buy some cement, mix it up and pour it in. you can even make many molds and attach them to a single board to increase efficiency.
A quarter is reusable. Cool idea for exploding targets but other wise a quarter or half dollar works to.....not saying i do it......but i bet it would work
Nathan, I live in North Carolina, are you familiar with the hunting laws and regulations? I really want to try out the RAMBONE 2.0 and SCOUT that I have recently purchased. I've killed a few squirrels from 15 yards away with my TORQUE slingshot, and wanted to move on to something more powerful. But now, since im wayy more serious about hunting, and I owe it to the game, and don't want to illegally hunt something that im not supposed to. So are you familiar with the NC hunting laws, where and where we cant hunt, and specifically which animals. Thanks! - from NC
NC does not have any specific language in the game laws regarding slingshots as a hunting weapon. You would be best served contacting your local DNR office and asking directly.
Sometimes on EBay, you can find people selling large bags of iron pellets, usually around 8mm. These work great, I bought a bag of 5 lbs worth for $9.00 and free shipping. They are not perfectly round, but they shoot just fine. I think I get well over 1000 pellets in the 5 lb. bag. Steel lug nuts might be a bit heavy, but I bet they hit like a ton of bricks. Try a few and see what happens. I shoot heavy projectiles, but I need to let everyone know that my main hunting slingshot (Daisy P-51) is not stock. I have replaced the rubber tubing with 9/16" 14mm speargun rubber. It now has a draw weight of around 45 lbs, and shoots .36 cal roundballs at over 300 fps. It's deadly at 40 yards.
Thanks for the Ebay info ..I check around about the iron pellets and I will also try the lug nuts ..I think they will be a solid projectile for hunting .I've been using a Yusylvia stainless steel.
I was wrong. My daisy P-51 with speargun Rubber actually has a draw weight of 65 lbs at full draw. I used my bow scale to measure it. I also replaced the bands on my Daisy B-52 with Theraband Silver tubing, and it has a draw weight of around 60 lbs. But it shoots faster than the speargun tubing, at 390 fps, maybe because the Theraband is thinner than the speargun rubber. These speeds were measured with my chronograph using 36 cal. roundballs. My full draw length (up against the corner of my mouth) is 27", measured from the forks. .
+cam3ronG93 The .32 cal balls are my favorite. I think this is the best compromise between speed and mass. The 6mm slingshot ammo is just too small. .36 cal balls are great for bigger things like rabbits. But for squirrels, my choice is .32 roundballs. .31 cal. (for cap and ball revolvers like the 1849 Colt Pocket Revolver) also works great.
That's Nathan in the video - he owns and operates "Simple-Shot.com", and I bought three of his slingshots. He's very well respected in the slingshot community. THWACK!
Some people only use 9.5mm steel,i can understand this if they use that ammo all the time, they will get to know the flight path over different distances and elevation,if they are using the same band set up as well and their aim is good then i can see no problem as they will be very familiar with the whole set up
"Delivering energy to the target" is what you need. Practice should be done with the same set-up as the one used for hunting, indeed (so you are familiar with it, as you mention), but the hunter must know that the chosen setup will deliver the needed energy to the game with the necessary accuracy for a clean kill. You've got to do the math with the bands and ammo your are using to make sure you've got sufficient energy!
animals eat lead, you eat animals, you get lead poisoning. Lead cause neurological damage to say, bald eagles. They can't fly which pretty much takes them out of the game. No lead.
there that many rules for hunting it stupid if cops looked youtube loads be arrested lol i think lamping and night vision sites are illigal under some circamstances

If it's a home made sling shot use thera gold bands and if you would like and probably should do is double it up. So two flat thera gold on each side. Look up the specs of how to do it and cut it and only use two bands on each side if you can pull back the sling shot with out shaking. If you master the sling shot im sure you can bag a rabbit. Good luck
Here in UK it's one thing we can do everywhere slingshot hunting. With the bands going about Europe and China were killing with 8mm steel even squirrels you seem far behind on bands in the USA
Well, this video is 3 years old. :) Remembering back to the day of this shoot, Nathan took a 3/8" steel ball out of his pocket and knocked the eye (and the life) out of a squirrel about 13 meters up in a tree on one shot. So... :)
The World Cup definitely got us working on accuracy and experimenting with the light bands that stole the show at the World Cup (where the US and UK got steamrolled by China and Spain shooting MUCH lighter bands). Definitely a wakeup call. :)
Very wise words and a sign of a respectful hunter

We do carry steel in every size you could want and practice/fun ammo. simple-shot.com/accessories/slingshot-ammo/ For hunting, the hammer is definitely king, but the Scout is a VERY popular hunting slingshot.
Is the axiom poly ott/ttf suitable for hunting
Scroll up to a reply sent to @Steve8189. I posted potential sources for Pb.
And if you're just wanting to have fun with learning the mechanics of slingshots (plinking) , raw chickpeas are cheap, fun, & bio-friendly, though not the best for learning aiming ballistics, as they're super lightweight.
They are fun like frozen peas but shooting food as ammo can also draw pests such as mice or rats.
Thank you for this video.
is a 3/8 inch good for hunting
Haha I have the saw question but I would think yes

very well spoken, respect 👌
THX!
a good target is small 1.5"/40mm cement discs, easily and cheaply made and they explode when you hit them, making a good indicator at range. to make the mold, just cut a 1.5" hole in a 2x2" or 3x3" piece of 3/4" plywood, sand the inside of the hole, screw the piece of plywood to a larger one tightly and you have a mold for the discs, buy some cement, mix it up and pour it in. you can even make many molds and attach them to a single board to increase efficiency.
What ever happened to defacing government money by using a good old quarter. Lolol
TJ Jones why waste money?
A quarter is reusable. Cool idea for exploding targets but other wise a quarter or half dollar works to.....not saying i do it......but i bet it would work
Very useful info. THANK YOU!
شكرا على المقاطع الرائعة فعلا استفدت منك الكثير
Thanks
Hi I noticed you didn't mention that steel is much better for the environment because led is poisonous. Great video👍
I've used marbles as well, with good results.
Do you think steel lug nuts would work? ..I was thinking of trying those.
These speeds were measured with my chronograph using 36 cal. roundballs. My full draw length (up against the corner of my mouth) is 27", measured from the forks. .
@@paradyne1T101 Not very aerodynamic, are they?
Because of Pornhub, I've learned not to confuse "body shots" with "backshots"
yea but with lead aren`t you contaminating the meat with it ?
No.
pretty good information
What is hunning
ive got a sling sot its awsom and cool
yo
Couldn't agree more!
I use .32 cal. Muzzleloader roundballs. Or sometimes .36 cal.
How well does it work? I've been thinking about doing the same thing
+cam3ronG93
The .32 cal balls are my favorite.
It works outstanding.
That's bs I've cleanly harvested several hairs with a rambone slingshot and body rib shots
Professional exploration. Well noted
what size ball bearing in milli metre that's best for Barrett pro Diablo any suggestions thanks
If it is stock, go small. Or, replace the bands with Theraband Silver, and use up to .50 cal.
where you bot your slingshot if on internet send me the link pl
Are there any clips of you actually hunting?
Very Good Advice, I particularly like the table tennis ball practice if you cannot hit that ball throw your slingshot away (safely)
Or practice safely until you can!
Great informative video
Great video!!!!
Well said if you can’t do it with one round don’t do it at all
Someone said ... steel won't poison the earth but lead will LOL 😂 both lead and steel come from the ground right here on good ole earth 🌏
animals eat lead, you eat animals, you get lead poisoning. Lead cause neurological damage to say, bald eagles. They can't fly which pretty much takes them out of the game. No lead.
Then why are lead fishing sinkers outlawed?
good advice
here in uk not allowed use stones for hunting weird i know.
+cr0cket01 i use them and i've never been in trouble.
there that many rules for hunting it stupid if cops looked youtube loads be arrested lol i think lamping and night vision sites are illigal under some circamstances
dont think there is much against lamping but there are some stupid night vision laws

Lead ball ammo!
Lead is not always allowed so check your regs.
I use jagged rocks lol because why not they save me money off pellets
what sling bands and steel size should I use to kill a rabbit
If it's a home made sling shot use thera gold bands and if you would like and probably should do is double it up. So two flat thera gold on each side. Look up the specs of how to do it and cut it and only use two bands on each side if you can pull back the sling shot with out shaking. If you master the sling shot im sure you can bag a rabbit. Good luck
Like you said....i never could reliably hit a quarter there for i never took that squirrel hunting
Yeah i would practice with 1/2 inch steel ball bearings with a double theragold band pulled tight. It packed a heck of a punch....im guessing
Amen !
Here in UK it's one thing we can do everywhere slingshot hunting. With the bands going about Europe and China were killing with 8mm steel even squirrels you seem far behind on bands in the USA
Well, this video is 3 years old. :)
Remembering back to the day of this shoot, Nathan took a 3/8" steel ball out of his pocket and knocked the eye (and the life) out of a squirrel about 13 meters up in a tree on one shot.
So... :)
SimpleShot Shooting Sports what bands you using there know?
The World Cup definitely got us working on accuracy and experimenting with the light bands that stole the show at the World Cup (where the US and UK got steamrolled by China and Spain shooting MUCH lighter bands).
Definitely a wakeup call. :)
U owe it to the game. U owe it to the game. U owe it to the game.......
U owe it to the game.
You owe it to the game.
The game ownes it
What is the biggest animal it can kill
