Star Trek TNG Music - First Attack [Best of Both Worlds: Part 1]

- Soundtrack from TNG episode The Best of Both Worlds as the Enterprise engages the Borg cube in combat for the first time. The complete track name is "First Attack - Looks - Tell It Like It Is". Composed by Ron Jones
Apparently, Rick Berman had no clue about how effectively music can convey the mood, theme and tone of a given TV episode or a motion picture, and the music can get the audience excited, scared and thrilled about what they’re seeing on screen. Ron Jones’s score for “The Best of Both Worlds” set the mood, theme and tone of the story so beautifully. Real shame Rick Berman fired him for doing his job and doing it *too* well.
The tradgedy in all this now is: Berman still produced much better Star Trek than the ... stuff we've gotten since 2016.
@@ThiloAdamitz You have no idea HOW right you are. The garbage that came out until then..the movies, STD, Lower Decks, Picard...Gene would rotate in his grave if he could see what this imbicile Kurtzman did to his baby :(
@@Hallo1248574 Actually, he's rolling in his grave at the behavior of the fans.
Plus, what Gene thought is not exactly a good metric to judge Star Trek by.
And I thought people liked Lower Decks for it clearly being a love letter to Star Trek.
Fans should be ashamed of themselves for behaving like religious zealots.
@@Hallo1248574 oh shut your gob
Don't bash Berman. I'll take him over racist Rodenberry or "Xena"/"Basic Instinct"-loving Shatner any day. Yes maybe they weren't Ron Jones, but Jay Chattaway and Dennis McCarthy had character to their scores as we see in the last few seasons of "TNG," on "DS9" and on "Voyager."
Ron Jones conveyed, the mighty Starship Enterprise brought to it's knees by the mysterious, malevolent swarm from the Delta Quadrant that is the Borg.
The sheer desperation in this score is perfect. Of course Ron knew he had to turn it up to 11 for this one.
And then he was promptly _fired_ by Rick Berman for going over 10.
@@EVAUnit4A He was fired for going over 5.

4:45: "Good... As long as they're looking for us, they won't hurt anyone else."
2:56 Enterprise swinging at the Borg Giant LET ME GO BITCH 🖖🏽😁
The part from 2:50 to 3:04 is one of my favorite parts of this score.
@@ugowar Also 3:11 to 3:18 when they finally break free and flee, and the borg immediately pursue
@@ugowar Absolutely.
"inform starfleet command , we have engaged ... the borg"
Oof. That line and music are just chilling.
"Load torpedo bays, arm phasers. Lock coordinates on the source of the tractor beam." "Shield status?" "Holding sir." "The nutation has them confused." "They have the ability to analyze and adapt, commander."
Thank Providence that Ron Jones got the BOTW gig. The score has a life of its own
I like the tension and suspense of this music.
Gotta give it to Ron Jones, here. This sounds really similar to something that'd be in wrath of khan. And it's fantastic
Doesn't much remind me of TWOK but it's of similar quality absolutely.
Ron Jones' Score for The Best of Both Worlds is the 3rd best score to anything in Star Trek history. It only ranks behind James Horner's Wrath of Khan, Cliff Eidelman's Undiscovered Country, and Jerry Goldsmith's First Contact.
I bought the CD soundtrack for TBOBW at the only Trek convention I had ever attended when I was 12 years old. I still have it to this day more than 25 years later, and it's Jones's masterpiece.
The music is menacing. Like the Borg!
To think that Rick Berman later had him fired for "being too bold".
"Best of Both Worlds" is the single best Score ever composed for a Star Trek-TV-Episode, hands down.
Ron Jones music is incredible ... I have no idea why Star Trek would wanna let him go... like Williams, Goldsmith, Horner a part of the soundtrack to my youth.
You can read Rick Berman's reasons here: www.startrek.com/article/rick-berman-answers-your-questions-part-1
"Too flamboyant"; bunch of bullshit really. Probably different tastes, but for me, music that calls attention to itself often gives something a cinematic feel, like Star Wars or something. I guess that's not what old Rick wanted for TV.
He literally told Ron Jones to stop being emotive with his music.
Which is nonsensical. The whole point of music is to give scenes a stronger emotional bridge to the audience. All you have to do is compare everything RJ did for TNG before he left versus everything that came after. The music after his departure is downright dull most of the time. Some of those later episodes could really have used Ron Jones touch.
@@Arroweast I can understand his perspective, however wrong it may be. The most memorable music from the show is, with very few exceptions, from Ron Jones. Did Berman seriously not learn a single thing from TOS and the first three Trek films? Memorable, well-composed music elevates the whole experience. Imagine watching the Enterprise leave drydock in TMP set to some TNG season 6-7 style elevator music. It would've been horrendous; the music is just as responsible for making a classic as the acting/art/editing/directing.
@@Arroweast I think the music is integral to a show's atmospheric feel.
@@OpenMawProductions Meanwhile Ron Jones' songs are the only songs in Star Trek (excluding the movies) that can literally take me back to the individual scenes they were played in and return me to the emotional state I was in while watching them. None of the wall paper music in DS9 or Voyager can do that.
BEST.TWO- PARTER. EVER!!
I am... Locutus of Borg. Your life as it has been... is over.
From this tine forward... you will srevice... us. Resistance is hopeless, Number One.
Worf; " Captain, YOU are being hailed."
Picard; " I Am ?"
Worf; " Yes, sir. By name."
Picard; " On screen !"
Picard; " You have committed acts of aggression against the United federation of planets ! If you do not withdraw immediately..."
*Picard motions Worf to cut communications*
Riker; " What the hell they want with you ? "
Shelby; "I thought they weren't interested in Human lifeforms, only our technology."
Picard; "Their priorities seem to have changed."
LaForge; " Captain, shields are being probed, I am modulating nutation."
Picard; " Load torpedo bays, arm phasers, lock coordinates on the source of the tractor beam."
Gives an eeire feeling to the borg
3:05--"Course, 1-5-1, mark...3-3-0! ENGAGE!"
This was edge of the seat stuff back in the day.
+CONTRA Of course!! the idea of Enterprise battling an invincible enemy was sort of whooosshhh glueing thing in itself. Music of Ron Jones and superb acting added more punch to the package. No doubt the show's rating increased after this episode.
I can totally hear it
Absolutely epic, the best soundtrack and the best episode of anything ever put on TV.
This is *LIT*
Deadass dawg
I don't understand the language young people of today use and it makes me angry and afraid.
"Star Trek: The Next Generation" season 3-4 episode "Best of Both Worlds"parts 1 and 2 was an awsome episode to watch!"
Star Trek series always had great music, although for instance in DS9 they sometimes forgot to add mysterious elements in there. Space should be mysterious. In that respect, nothing rivals season 1 from TNG. Cast and crew may have been wobbly many times but the orchestra was phenomenal. Romulan theme alone was sheer brilliance. And by far the best sounding episode in all of Star Trek.....drum rolls....."11001001"
yes, even when they recycled a little in voyager
I love the Romulan theme, one of the best ever. We need to hear it more.
Ron Jones should’ve never been given the boot.
You can thank Rick Berman for giving Ron jones the boot after he got fired we ended up have crap painful music for many years to come.
God, I love this soundtrack!! XD
Borg: "RESISTANCE IS FUTILE!"
3 people were assimilated by the borg
Worf :Captain you are being hailed. Picard : I am ? Worf : Yes Captain by name .Riker : Data is it the same ship we faced at J-25 ? Data : Uncertain commander but the dementions are the same .
2:35 WORF :They're cutting into the hull engineering section . RIKER : GEORDI evacuate engineering ! LaFORGE computer evacuation sequence and at 3:26 RIKER : damage report Geordi. LaFORGE : hull rupture in main engineering the damage is pretty heavy we lost a lot of good people down there . DATA: 11 dead 8 more unaccounted for CAPTAIN .

1:22 Load torpedoe bays ready phasers lock on to the source of the tractor beam
Holy shit just by itself that soundtrack is most intense dude!
flawless!
Excellent.
WOW man you work fast
in other words berileant
+jpfoley24 sorry spell check lol
oh hey, didnt expect to see you here
The best of both worlds was better than any of the TNG films.
Well... I like this music but... I unno, it sounds more like something out of Star Wars than something you'd hear on Star Trek, especially around 2:45
Why did star trek tng and the simpsons sound similar? The simpsons was copying that late night TV sound scape with the dirty rock guitar riffs that sound mysterious etc right?
WW III
Sounds like jurassic park and the simpsons
