    My hand is cramped from taking notes, but I'm so happy I did! This video really helped sharpen my mind more on story structure. Thanks!

    Very interesting video, thank you! I've never read Shadow & Bone so I don't have my own knowledge to add/reflect on here, but I think I was able to follow along quite easily. And I agree- no video is going to teach a writer what reading a book will, as long as that writer is reading to learn.

    Hi, new subscriber. Like you, I really get a lot from mapping character and plot outlines onto real stories. Unlike you, I haven't heard of Shadow and Bone, BUT I was amazed how I was able to map the same beats onto Hunger Games and Pride and Prejudice as you spelled it out. All of a sudden things like pinch points and reversals and raising stakes and stating themes became very clear to me. Thank you for the immense effort you put into this video, I'm looking forward to the next one very much. 💕

    • @mikwrites
      @mikwrites  4 місяці тому +1

      Oh wow I’m so glad this was helpful! I have way too much fun geeking out about plotting stories against beats - so fun you were able to take this and put it against Hunger Games and Pride and Prejudice and that it made raising stakes and the like clearer!!! Can’t wait to hear more about your discoveries!

    This is an amazing video! ❤ I love how you've broken down the structure by chapters and the effort that's gone into it. I am currently re-reading the Shadow & Bones trilogy, so it's the perfect time to go through this.
    I've been making notes and analysing the writing style of books I've been reading lately. I like to take a closer look at the writing and story structure based on my reading experience, to pinpoint why something worked or didn't work for me.
    I'm also thinking of getting back into writing some short stories. It's been a while, and these kind of videos are so helpful !

    • @mikwrites
      @mikwrites  4 місяці тому +1

      Wow thank you so much!! 💗🫶 I also just re-read the shadow and bone trilogy with the intention of studying structure since YA books follow structure pretty much to a T.
      Love that you’re getting back into writing short stories!! Those are truly all about structure in a condensed format - happy writing!! 💗

      @mikwrites Thank you! Also, I hope you do an analysis on Six of Crows 😍 There are so many things I found interesting in the writing structure, narrative style, character development, and shifts in perspectives!

    I know this is probably so niche but I would love if you did a video on Interiority. I feel like I struggle with that a lot when I'm writing because I worry I'm being too obvious or "telling" too much.

    • @mikwrites
      @mikwrites  4 місяці тому

      Yes!!! As soon as I mentioned interiority in this masterclass - I knew it would be something I'd love to dive into - thanks so much for watching!

    I am so glad this video was recommended. Instant subscribe. I just write for fun, and outlining plots are my weaker area. This was perfect.
    Would love to see something similar with The Raven Boys, or a similar book where I feel like the action is more of a back seat to the character’s journey.

      Thank you so much!! I’m so glad it was helpful in some way! I would love to do this with the Raven boys and what a great excuse to reread the series! That series does an amazing job of keeping great structure within each book and the overarching story WHILE making sure every character has their arc- definitely masterclass worthy 🫶 I’ll add it to the list!

    just as you said, i've searched for such analysis video as well and never got any good ones. thanks for creating this video. it helped me understand the structure better and really changed my opinion about some of the parts of a story structure.
    also i wanted to ask if you participate in camp nanowrimo. if you do, how do you usually prep for it?

    • @mikwrites
      @mikwrites  4 місяці тому +1

      Yay!! Thank you for watching! Love that it helped you understand structure a bit better 🤗 & I used to do nanowrimo and camp nanowrimo all the time -- I haven't fully participated in a couple years though. I do have certain things I always *do* or plan before I start writing my zero draft though - I could definitely talk about that in a video.
      It's a lot of what it is my idea > plot video where I make sure I have an actual plot, then create the characters, nail down setting, and most importantly (and think it's overlooked) is theme!
