Cantona was a one off. At a team day out at the horse racing back in the day, they were being urinated on by a large group of Liverpool fans in the stand above.
In true Eric fashion, he ran straight up the stairs on his own, swinging punches at them. Legend.

Cantona was the bridge between the old and new era of English football. If he had played a few years later he'd be lauded higher these days. @@barrysmale8060 Yeah I think Bergkamp was possibly the first 'established superstar' signing from abroad in the post-1992 era to come in and forge a legacy. He was, without question, one of the most significant figures in shaping the Prem to what it's evolved in to now. Klinsmann was probably the first 'superstar' of the era to arrive, and had a stunning season in that first Spurs spell, but can't be considered as influential as Bergkamp or Cantona. I guess what that did show was the growing draw of the PL.

Never underestimate the love and esteem in which Eric Cantona is held by fans at Manchester United. If ever a statue should be erected of any ex-player, the majority of fans would vote for Cantona, over all others. A player who won the French title with Marseille, then the following season with Leeds, then the first of four titles with United, ending 26 years in the wilderness. That season was the start of United's almost total domination, until Ferguson left. United fans all know that first title was thanks to Eric Cantona. Liverpool were offered Cantona and turned Marseille down. We took him from the hated Leeds. There's much talk of club legends at United, and above them all sits King Eric.

But unbelievable player. Didn't realise how many assists he had until I saw that infographic, but not surprised. The way he would drop deep, drag a CB with him, then ping the ball into the space he'd vacated for Giggs/Sharpe/Kanchelskis to run into was a joy to behold.
