You can really see how Putin was full of optimism for a healthy future between Russia and the west. Boy did they take him for a run... he sure learned the hard way.
He was really enthusiastic about their openness. Things like this make me so sad, so many things would be different if our relationship had stayed warm. We really needed each other's perspective and friendship.

The west never wanted any kind of friendship with Russia. Sad thing is Russia was begging for good relations at one point but the military industry needs this enemy
Russia is fighting for a multipolar world, and the United States is fighting for its hegemony. If Russia wins, there will be no more conflict of interests and it will be beneficial for both countries to cooperate in the new world. The world will change a lot, rather Russia and the United States will be allies against China.
Of course he is enthusiastic - his country was basically broke by that time and USA was thriving and was richer than ever before. Oh, boy, enthusiastic he is.
