    I was in school when this episode aired and it was 2 days before Thanksgiving. It was truly a black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving 1975 when Edge left CBS.

      Kent Brooks, be sure to head over to my buddy Sharon Gabet's channel. She has some very rare shows from 1976-1978 that will be posted over the next 6 weeks on her channel exclusively. And I am hoping to have some new Edge episodes too from the missing 1981 period some time next month when I get a series of tapes from a former cast member.

    A week before the controversial move to ABC, due to CBS expanding ATWT (1956-2010) to an hour, and so on. EON ended on 12/28/1984.

      Surprised it lasted 9 more years on ABC. The last few years of the show were terrible, but before that the show remained solid.

      @@alexisdiva9They tried, but they couldn’t explicitly mention that Edge was moving to ABC. That was one of the reasons why ratings dropped when Edge switched networks; another reason was that many ABC stations chose not to air the show at all in order to air more profitable local and/or syndicated programs in Edge’s place.

    • @blozier2006

      @@alexisdiva9 they may not have been able to... from what I've read, when Search for Tomorrow moved from CBS to NBC in 1982, CBS only allowed them to advertise that the show was changing networks, on the condition that they didn't explicitly name NBC as the network they were going to... knowing that, I'd be surprised if a similar gag rule wasn't in place when Edge of Night moved.

      @@Joe-ix5hj you're right: for example, in the Philly area WPVI didn't air EON but farmed it out to independent station WKBS (UHF channel 48) - heaven only knows if it was aired during the final 16 months when WKBS went off the air in August 1983.

      Both programs were on CBS for more than two and half years. However, by the time it left that network in November 1975, it was their lowest rated daytime drama. Total mismanagement by both the sponsor (Proctor & Gamble) and the network which sunk a once top-rated series and sent it spiraling to the bottom of the ratings ladder.

      P&G used to put stuff like glasses and dish towels in their laundry detergent powder - probably going all the way back to the Great Dépression in the '30s to create more value for buyers that listened to the radio serials they sponsored.

    Between 1973 and 1974 was when soap operas in general stopped using organ backgrounds and themes and began using orchestral backgrounds and themes. I guess Proctor & Gamble, which sponsored and produced the lion’s share of soap operas back then, more or less made the unilateral decision to have that done across the board, so to speak…

    • @JozarS.-ol4fj
      @JozarS.-ol4fj 8 місяців тому

      Those P&G-produced soap operas on CBS (As The World Turns, Guiding Light, and The Edge of Night) were influenced by The Young and the Restless, a P&G-sponsored Sony-Bell-produced soap which themes and scores are already fully orchestrated, to switch the themes from organ music to full orchestrated music. Meanwhile, those P&G-produced soaps on NBC (Another World and Somerset) were also influenced by Days of Our Lives (Corday production; its first theme was orchestrated since then) and The Doctors (sponsored by Colgate-Palmolive; its theme music had been already in full orchestrated version from its inception) to switch their themes from organ music to full orchestrated music.

    • @terencedove5047
      @terencedove5047 8 місяців тому

      @@JozarS.-ol4fj …I would agree; but it is why I used the term ‘in general’. There’s no denying that DAYS OF OUR LIVES (1965) and THE DOCTORS (1963) definitely did not follow the musical trend that many other soap operas at the time were adhering to. I would even venture to say that LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDORED THING (1967) used orchestration for its first year, but let organist Eddie Layton take over from 1968 until the show’s end in 1973 - just about the time that orchestration was being used not only on THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS, but also SOMERSET and ANOTHER WORLD, as you pointed out. To dig back a little further into history, ABC’s ALL MY CHILDREN (1970) and ONE LIFE TO LIVE (1968) [both of which were sponsored not by P&G, but by CREATIVE HORIZONS] used orchestration from their beginnings until their endings…
