- Heavy snowfall forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights from Munich airport - and the suspension of operations there until Sunday. Long-distance rail services have also been disrupted by the extreme winter weather.
Parts of Switzerland, Czech Republic and Austria are also affected by the extreme weather.

I hope normal snowy winters are coming back...
I lived for many years in Colorado where it snowed every Winter. I eventually moved to the Southern Midwest where snow is rare. These days, if I could afford to live there again, I would not hesitate to move back to the Colorado high-country again because I miss those beautiful snowy evenings (now that I'm retired and don't have to work outside anymore 😂)
I live on Bodensee...and it is AWESOME snow, everything looks absolutely gorgeous. I hope part of the lake freezes this year, so we can get some ice skating in.
And all the trains out of Singen and Radolfzell are cancelled... But for some reason, Swiss trains are working on time.... Interesting

Yes, like in my childhood, ice skating in the harbor, or in Mauracher Bay, sledding, to Heiligenberg for skiing and cross-country skiing. Long ago sighs. Greetings neighbor

I understand it's a hassle and I hope no one gets hurt, but it hasn't properly snowed in Zagreb for years and a part of me would love for that to happen here 😅

Here in Austria we already have 2 meters 🥲 the meteorologists say that it will get worse, tonight we will have -16 C which is normal for the Alps but not here in the city, anyway greeting from Bad Ischl 😁
Lucky you. I don't even remember what it's like to have snow in December anymore. Nothing more cozy than having snowy Christmas holidays.

Have you seen the freezing of New York last winter? Pictures like that not even made in Sibiria where the permafrost is melting and a natural methan spring looks like a volcan breake
@@NPCONSULTING247-jy3pz New York experiences occasional heavy snowfall owing to the lake effect of the Great Lakes. Hardly permafrost, since it's usually gone just as quickly as it comes.
Fifty years ago we got married on December 1st with snow on the ground. No snow on that day ever since except this year we had a celebratory fifteen minute snow shower.

That was normal weather, when i grew up there in the 60's and 70's. It'll be melted in a few days, no worries..
We will have -15 C at night and max -4 at day and the cold is expected to get worse 😅 at least here in Austria

I'm not disagreeing that snow isn't unusual, it snowed in northern Germany this time last year too. Nevertheless, it's still autumn.
@@mariannetindall58583rd of December is not autumn anymore 🤔 in some regions of Germany it would be normal to get snow from beginning- middle of November.
@@Domi3454 Winter starts on December 21st. Snowy christmases were never typical for Germany or Czechia. Deciduous trees in Prague are still green, now just under 15cm of snow. That is insane.
@@serebii666 That's true for the astronomical definition of the season, but winter weather comes to Central Europe well before that date. The meteorological winter starts on December 1.

Years back similarly I was stuck in Heathrow, London and when I fell asleep in the waiting chair and a few hours later there were people from the whole town around you sleeping on the floor and stuck due to climatic conditions, most of the restrooms were occupied, and it is a nightmare for the passengers who get stuck at the airport.
Those in the United States that get stuck in the airport due to poor weather conditions know exactly what to do - they 'melt-down' and go berserk . . . much to the entertainment of other travelers and chagrin to their travel companions 😂

FYI: Snow in itself is not a problem in Bavaria. The problem is that it was relatively much in a relative short period of time, especially for Munich where the is usually not that much snow.
I life roughly 60 Miles southeast of Munich and we didn’t hat that much disruption. Major Roads where clear, only neighborhood streets are still kind of snowy.

Have a look at the sea temperature and land temperature charts for 2023. Failing to see is a failure to look, dude. The charts show climate (you are acquainted with weather) and the climate is changing. Jack Nicholson was right, we can't handle the truth.
It never snowed 40cm (16 inches) in 24 hours in Germany. Of course we'll cope with it, but that was a lot a once.
Well, that is the problem. It used to be normal winter weather. Except, that now, it is no longer normal winter weather.
@@hape3862It never snowed that amount of snow in the *city of Munich* (in 24 hours), but Not entire Germany. In the Alpine Mountain region or parts of the Sauerland 40cm per 24 hour occur nearly every winter.

Here in Bad Ischl in the Salzkammergut area in Austria we got 2 meters (6,9 feet) of snow just after a night of snow 😅

Here in Österreich 🇦🇹 we have already a stand of 2 meters of snow in Bad Ischl and tonight we will have -16 C it is expected to get worse we also will have another couple of days of extreme snow we didn't had electricity for 36 hours 😢

Back in early January 2011 we have massive amounts of snow, we had 22 ft deep snow in 56 hrs . You had to dig a tunnel to get out of your house, luckily as we dug tunnelling for such as walking my dog we had Google maps to use for directions. Snow drifts reached over 90 ft. The full town had a snow tunnel system Eventually by mid May it had all melted. Upto now we haven't had any snow issues,, yet, stay safe, keep warm.

@@alexlong3714 No, our gas storage facilities are filled to the brim (they would last for 3 months if the supply were suddenly cut off). Inflation and energy prices continue to fall and have almost reached pre-war levels. For example, just yesterday I received a letter from my electricity supplier saying that they are reducing the price of a KWh by 10 cents in January. That means an electricity bill of €80 a month for me (before the war it was €70) - nothing the Germans can't cope with, after all we are one of the richest countries in the world.
What month was this?

Obky 2 Dec and so much snow already - that should signal concerns over climate change. In Sydney Australia it's beginning of summer but we have big storms and rain then heat waves (40C)

For your info, Munich hasn't seen this much snow since they started keeping records. 44 cm of snow is even exceptional for New York City, which is subject to the lake effect of the Great Lakes. Murican much?
@@peabase "Schneemaggedon" is what I would call the snow storm of November 16-18? 2022 when up to 81cms of "lake effect" snow got dumped in upper NY state just south/east of Lake Ontario (Hamburg, Orchard Park, NY) . You could barely see out of some first floor windows. Snow up to your waist blacking exits out of garages. Snow plows stuck. And it is absolutely NO FUN driving in it!! You hit a wall of snow coming down, Then find yourself sandwiched between two tractor trailers going 5-10kmph through "cow path" ruts along the interstate for miles. Such are winters in the "great white north".
Here in Austria we stayed for 36 hours without any electricity it's not normal at all, we reached 2 meters of snow in a matter of hours 😅 we had a storn with thunderstorms which is also extremly unusual in winter
@@maxineporter8848 Oh, I've experienced a badly snowed-under Manhattan, and I'm not easily perturbed by snow -- I was born smack on the Arctic Circle. However, in NYC snow comes quickly and goes quickly. In the Arctic, the first snow falls in September and the last bits melt in June. It tends to pile up, too. One and a half metres is pretty normal and that's for months on end.

Not anymore, the last white Christmas was in 2010 except for those near the alps

The world is big, as is all the data pointing to a big problem. It appears we can't handle big data loads. Have a look at the 2023 water and land temperature charts to see what is happening and not what appears so. The charts are climate. It appears we would rather a penny full of fairytale to a proper dose of facts.

Actually, global warming increases the likelihood of heavy snowfall. As the atmosphere heats up, it holds more moisture. In the winter, the moisture comes down as snow. Keep learning.
