*sigh* Yet another instance in which I'm shocked that there are fans who *actually* act like this towards the celebs (ex. actors, authors, singers, sports players, etc.) they supposedly enjoy. Treating these artists like inhuman, animate attractions instead of with respect as people.

oh my gosh, yes! The very first concert I ever went to was post-covid, and I absolutely ADORED the openers! But everyone else there was only interested in the main show, and it was so dead! Because it was my first show I didn't really know what to do and I didn't get to fully enjoy myself because everyone else was so dead. To add onto it, SO MANY PEOPLE left right after the main show ended, it was just so disrespectful, especially because both the openers and the closers were so amazing. Even if you don't know them you can still enjoy and vibe with the music, live music is amazing!!

I need people that go to k-pop concerts to go to other concerts, preferably rock concerts, cause MY GOD they're impossible. Also those stupid phones always up like PLEASE GOD PLEASE enjoy the concert you paid a pretty penny to come and see.
The thing to throw stuff at artists is bonkers to me, cause usually you either ask security to pass something or you wimp-ly throw stuff as close as possible on the stage and pray they see it.

@@talistheintrovertI am thrilled ‘concert event in movie theaters’ are gaining popularity because those are certainly less overwhelming and more accessible for most humans. Alternately, I always extol the merits of catching smaller acts in rural or destination venues. If accessible, they are IME better because most everyone has had to travel there for that performance. Crowds are more invested and respectful of the artist.

oh my god i went to see wave to earth(a korean indie band) and it made me realize how wildly insane post covid kpop fans are at concerts. It was a small venue and i expected an indie rock crowd, but it was definitely the opposite. it was all standing and no one had any concept of giving people space and were just cramming to get to get a better spot. EVERYONE had their damn phone on the whole time and were SCREAMING(not singing) the lyrics the entire time. not to mention nearly everyone completely ignored the opener and were just queuing for merch while they performed. now i've been too basically every genre of concert(small punk shows, big stadium shows, actual kpop concerts, indie shows, etc) but this was the first time I genuinely had an awful time at a concert and it was so disappointing to see.

yes to all of this but especially loved your point about the pit at a rock/punk/metal concert being SO different than at a pop concert. hell my first concert was Social Distortion when i was 12 and that pit was anything but scary. i think a lot of it comes down to a lot of rock/metal fans go to concerts all the time, whereas a lot of the people at a pop concert are there for this one artist and don’t really do concerts at all outside of that one experience. which is fine, but it also really shows when they haven’t taken the time to learn how the hell to behave at a concert.

I also think that the mosh pit "tradition" at rock/metal concerts has a lot to do with it. For a mosh pit to be safe people NEED to respect the unwritten rules.
-someone falls, you make space and pick them up. Make sure they are OK, before you go back in the pit.
-No purposeful hitting with hard body parts.
      -follow the movements.
      -ETC.
My partner has seen people being forcefully taken out of a mosh pit for being too violent and being kept out.
Those crowds (now a day.....) Also tend to be older. So, more concerts experience, less youthful impulsivity. I personally feel safe being in a bikini top at rock/metal concerts... Not at pop concerts.

During that time, multiple people called out things like “BILLIE I LOVE YOU” and “I LOVE YOU TOO”. It was incredibly disrespectful and disappointing. People also were flooding out by her last few songs. My worst concert experience by far.

I live in Québec City and we have the Festival d'été in July. It's 10 days of outdoor concerts and my birthday is ALWAYS in one of those 10 days. So I went a LOT. But artists have started to complain that people in the VIP section aren't listening and engaging!
This baffles me!! The weekly standard passes are already expensive in my opinion and they pay VIP prices to chat and be on their phones! And half of the front stage is reserved for them!

Note for anyone who hasn't been to a stadium concert before: yes it is appropriate to pull out your phone flashlight and sway it to the beat of a slow song if everyone else is doing it because people used to do that with lighters once upon a time. This doesn't give you license to put your strobe effect on between songs just for the hell of it; it's annoying and could give someone else a seizure.
And to quote one of my favourite musicians, "it's not the size of the crowd that's in the gig, but the gig that's in the crowd." The best concert I've ever been to was in a half-full theatre (which was tiny to begin with) because everyone there was invested. I saw the same artist sell out the same theatre a year later and bomb because field trip teens talked through the whole show. A disinterested audience will ruin a concert no matter if there's 30 people or 3,000.

19:03 EXACTLY. I am involved in my local theatre. The amount of people on their phones is absolutely ASTOUNDING. Like, why pay MONEY to be at a place and then just... be on your phone? At that point you're just spending $15 to be on your phone. And that's at my local theatre. At concerts you're spending like, HUNDREDS to be on your phone. And for what??? Like, I get stuff comes up sometimes. If that happens - go outside, do what you need to, and come back.

I was on my first concert not very long ago as a 17 year old girl. It was a metal concert and I was really worried beforehand, but it was literally one of the greatest experiences of my life. The mosh pit opened right before me, and at first I thought that would scare the shit out of me and I wouldn't be able to enjoy the music anymore, but i think it made it better. I was never in the mosh pit and was never pushed into it by the people behind me, I just happily pushed the people already inside back in (so sweaty omg), and whenever somebody had to like tie their shoes or fell down, immediately two to four guys would form a wall around them to protect them while they got back up. It was really wholesome, and I never felt unsafe even once, I actually very much enjoyed the action. Seeing the people have fun while being a little rowdy and still respectful and caring towards all the others was so so refreshing to see.
I don't know, just wanted to share that ♡

I've actually been noticing worsened audience etiquette at classical concerts too. At all three concerts I've attended this season there have been groups of people who talked throughout the performance. And to some extent you can expect a few whispers during the music; some of these pieces are an hour long and it's not uncommon to bring young children. But this has been so much more. Full conversations or consistent spoken comments while the orchestra is playing. Plus it's a classical concert, there are no amps or speakers to carry the sound through the concert hall, just the instruments and architectural design. This makes it really easy for even the quietest of whispers to carry far and cover up the music. The symphony's website even mentions that the acoustics of the concert hall are so sensitive that the musicians on stage can hear you talking while they play. And because of how my brain works, it takes me a lot of energy and concentration to focus on music instead of words, and sometimes I feel like I've missed part of the concert because my brain ended up processing a conversation instead. Like you said, I really don't understand why people are paying to attend a concert where they aren't listening to the music.

I remember when 12 year old girls at their first alt concert could throw themselves into a mosh pit and everyone would make sure they had a good time, and if anyone started looking queasy theyd be escorted to the sides for some water and let back in when they felt better. cant imagine that happening now!

Unfortunately my only concert experiences have been post Covid. Fortunately it was for Dreamcatcher both times and they have a mixed pop/rock crowd. The first time was in an arena and it was a great first concert for me. Second time was in a theatre and it was also good. The smaller location did let me notice some of the behavior you’re talking about. Several times when one of the women were talking on stage, someone in the crowd would interrupt them to yell that they love one of the members (usually not the one that was talking??? Which is another type of rude). Thankfully both times the phone usage was only moderate at worst from what I saw. I think part of that was because I know there’s a few DC fans who go to almost every concert exclusively to film it from decent angles. Most fan circles I know understand there’s no need to record the whole thing because someone else definitely is.

The only problems I had were the venue wouldn't let us make the full staff for our lightsticks and the girls even mentioned it but didn't know it was the venue. I had my full staff but had to take it apart and put it my bag. The other issue was 1 dude in front of me who was already very tall had a hat on which was not great I think most of the videos I took that night had his hat in it.

I'm relatively new to the concert world, at least on a semi-regular basis, so I really enjoyed hearing this take from someone who's been going to concerts for longer than I have! I am someone who records during concerts (mainly because I'm a Gen Z who has tbh an obsessive need to capture photos of videos of something cause I'm afraid of missing out on stuff, my phone storage hates me for this lol), but y'know what I also do? Scream and cry and show genuine excitement/support to who I'm paying sometimes a lot of money to see, especially with K-Pop concerts. Like I saw Twice on both of their recent tours and my footage is basically just me losing my mind in the background seeing my ult group in person. I do sometimes worry I'm being annoying to those around me, but I promise it's never intentional and purely just me experiencing fan hysteria in real time haha.
I would never even consider throwing something at performers though, so the fact that people think that's "normal" is actually concerning. Also if an artist asks me to put my phone away, I'm gonna put it away without question. I went to a symphony concert for my fav anime One Piece back in July which had a firm "no recording or photos" rule, and as much as my band kid self mourned that I still respected their request. I'm not about to risk getting kicked out of a once in a lifetime experience cause of my dumb phone, and I still had an amazing time. After watching this though, I'm gonna try and be more conscious of this going forward! I have two concerts coming up in November so I'm now aiming to have my phone out less for those 😄

As someone who has been to quit a lot of concerts/festivals for my age, I see it a lot in the crowd my age (20). I don't get why people go to concerts just to stand there and not move, not sing but just film it. Even better when they get pissed at you because your voice is on the recording.

But what few I have been, even if I wasn't into all the acts or the music, it's such a magnetic experience to share with so many people. I feel like a concert is such a unique experience that I used to say that I'd probably enjoy going to just about any artist's concert. I've not been to even one concert after covid, but it disheartens me that we'd lose that powerful sense of shared resonance and vibrance in such a visceral vulnerable moment. Especially when it's caused by a lack of recognition in shared humanity. I'd hate to see artists as just commodities for me, and I'd hate even more to come to see my fellow crowd members as just a nuisance in the telling of my story. There's a podcast I watch on YT, the Chosen Family podcast, and one of the members is a comedian. And in the most recent video, she was talking about this experience she had with a heckler that went horribly. This talk of etiquette at shows reminds me of the story, because she was saying that people didn't seem to know how to act at shows and maybe that was the problem. So ig this isn’t just music concerts this happens at.
I remember at the start of the internet, there was this talk of netiquette, how to act online. Now I feel like people take it for granted. They think they know, so they don't think about it, so they act however they want. Idk what it is, but that's what I imagine. So clearly we need to talk about it again, which is exactly what this video was, so thanks.

I saw Were Promised Jetpacks about 10yrs ago. Amazing, but during Its Thunder & It's Lightening 's guitar solo some idiots in the crowd wouldn't stop shouting. That song is a powerhouse of emotional turmoil. Because of those guys, the band stopped playing and walked off stage. They did not finish the show. Ever since then, I've felt more than before how to respect the artist I'm watching.
And then this past year at Oneus, one of the members came out into the crowd, a person who had front row seats ran up to the back of the theater where I was sitting to get a selfie with the artist by shoving her self and her phone at him.
Some people have always been terrible, but now they are just a bigger level of terrible and we can all film their behavior.

Phones out at concerts and other events just boggles my mind. I want to experience the show with all my senses, not on a tiny screen. I'll occasionally get my phone out for a quick picture or video, but it's more about the attempt to capture the environment. Seeing all those little screens in front of the stage is just weird, because I feel like those people are so focused on some detail of the show that they're missing being in the moment. The synergy between performers and audience. While the occasional epic fancam moments happen, they are few and far between. I'm not going to waste a concert experience hunting for something so rare. And I know there will be excellent concert videos available soon enough for the memories 😃

There are really good points made in this video, and I'm sorry you went through the rough experiences that you did. The only thing I tend to disagree with is the point about filming concerts. "If you're just filming the entire concert, and, like, watching the concert down the lens of your phone, that's not experiencing a concert. Why are you here? To get points on TikTok? Fuck off."
Not everyone that films concerts is ultimately doing it for TikTok clout, and not all of them mean to be disrespectful. Some people actually want to preserve the concert. I live in Abilene, Texas, USA, where as far as good concerts go, nothing ever happens - so when something finally does happen, like Blue October graces us with one great live performance (Paramount Theatre, 2/29/2024, it was great), it's worth catching it permanently. It might never happen again, so to have that recording and to have that video that you can watch over and you can re-experience it is actually really nice. You made a great point that no two live performances are alike, so that's just a natural development that comes out of that. People in the audience have been pointing video cameras at performers since at least the 1960s - silent fanmade Super 8 footage exists of the Beatles' 2/11/1964 Washington Coliseum concert. Maybe not everyone who films concerts is doing it for such a "noble" cause as preservation, but that's essentially what filming it is in the first place, and that's the purpose it serves.
If you want to talk about being invested in a concert, filming the concert shouldn't be so grave a sin. THAT IS A FAN BEING INVESTED IN THE CONCERT ENOUGH TO WANT TO KEEP IT FOREVER AND SHARE IT WITH WHOEVER THEY WISH TO.
I can get away with recording the concert, even when an artist (potentially) tells me to put my phone down because I'm still recording the sound with a Sony audio recorder. If you make me put THAT away, I will GO AWAY.
Otherwise, this was a really great video!

I'm saying this from my perspective as someone that got tired of waiting for friends to go to concerts with and decided to try going alone:
I love Janelle Monae and I still had to leave early because I was trying something very uncomfortable and got super overstimulated by the event and feeling hyperaware of myself in public in that way.
That's something that's influencing my opinion of your point on people leaving - I never really think about why they do, I just get out of there way. I also stopped recording at live shows cause I wanna just be in the moment and not care about how it'll look for social. I kind of thank being an elder millennial that I really don't care if I don't get more than a few clips, if that. I don't grow up with a cell so I'm not so attrached to recording my life

Not a concert thing but a “wtf people?? Did nobody teach you basic human decency??” thing: one of my favourite actors, Edvin Ryding (most well-known for playing Wilhelm in Young Royals), has literally had to tell people on social media to stop commenting on his physical appearance because people have full-on *bombarded* him with hate all because he cut his hair shorter and started growing a moustache (and then there’s *even more* people prying into his life all because he happened to mention that he’s in a relationship). He’s f-cking *20,* no wonder he’s experimenting with his hair, and even if he was older, did nobody teach some of these people “their body, their choice”?? So, yeah, in general my heart absolutely breaks for him, he deserves all the best and it truly sucks that some people are so, for lack of any better words, sh!t.

At the time of seeing this I have been 4 concerts all within the last year. All of them in then varying crowd sizes. In order from largest crowd size to smallest they were: Ghost and Amon Amarth, Styx, Mac Sabbth (with Playboy Manbaby and The Cybertronic Spree), and a local show with 5 local bands (Mio Min Mio, Or Does it Explode, RIOTNINE, Snag, and Boxing Day). The rowdiest crowd was Styx because it was a mostly older crowd reliving the 80s and it was on St. Paddy’s Day. Ghost everyone was very nice and respectful. Me and my friend didn’t have pit tickets but it looks fun and people weren’t crowding the front. There was even room at that concert for someone in the pit to propose to their girlfriend mid-concert. The crowd that was the least comfortable was the last one listed because as the night went on more and more people that were not familiar with the music and the type of people that go to small punk shows started showing up. Because of that and we knew the vibe was getting ruined me and my friend left before the final band started. You could just tell that the college sorority girls and frat boys were done with their party and came so we left. Every concert has had people on their phones phones and videoed here and there and I I’d as well. I filmed the most Ghost because I knew all the songs already and I needed proof I was there. The rest were small clips here and there as I wanted to relive the moment later. I could not imagine someone wanted to video the entire concert. I am grateful I haven’t been in a bad crowd yet but I know it will probably happen eventually but I will say I am glad for not liking pop music. I fell a lot of metal and punk crowds would not let people be disrespectful.

Literally 2 steps away from the doors or 2. Casually walking and smoking just letting all that second hand smoke be picked up from others around me because news-flash this isn't only for them, like this store isn't your personal store. And don't get me started on PARENTS that smoke yet...also, have small children? Like...?

This was a very fun video to watch for me because we have very similar stories. I have been going to concerts since I was 2. It was Johnny Cash which is cool but I'm sad I was too young to remember. We didn't take as many family vacations but we did go to concerts. As such I too have been to a lot of concerts of many genres and venues. I've been to heavy metal local concerts in bars to classical orchestra concerts to kpop concerts in stadiums. I have seen all of the behavior Talis mentioned at least once before and it's not fun to see.
The classical concerts you get kicked out for bad behavior in the crowd same as a theater show. I personally don't do mosh pits because even if you don't fall you can get hurt especially, with how clumsy I am but I love the energy. I have noticed a bit of a change in crowd behavior since covid and that has been frustrating. Classic Rock concerts have pretty much remained the same before and after Covid probably because it is the same people lol, lots of pot smoking and dancing/ singing. Some modern Rock/ metal concerts I have had issues with cigarettes and vape smoke. I too have a bit of asthma and it can be very rough. I hadn't heard about that Pearl Jam concert issue before. Pearl Jam pre-covid was one of my absolute favorite concerts ever. Eddie did not want to leave the stage and the crowd was living for it.
Before I get into the next part, I'm sorry Talis your Blackpink concert wasn't as fun because of the crowd. I went to kpop concerts before and after covid. And yes the phones is a real thing but not all of the kpop crowds/ crowds in general I've seen have phones up the whole time which is nice. At the Enhypen concert recently the crowd was pretty good at not having their phones up the whole time. I occasionally see a partner or a dad that clearly isn't a fan playing on their phone the whole time. This is isn't exclusive to kpop this happened at the Jonas Brothers concert I went to recently as well. Stray Kids concerts almost always have really chill/fun crowds I saw them 2 times before covid and 2 times after. I've only seen Seventeen once but they are masters at controlling a crowd and it is wonderful to see in person. When I am not at Kpop concerts I find I miss seeing the lightsticks in the crowd.
The BTS after covid concerts felt really different than the ones I saw before covid. Specifically, I went to the fist 2 nights of the SoFi PTD concerts. The venue had only had 1 event before BTS (it's a new venue) and was not prepared for BTS. The fans were organizing themselves into lines and the staff didn't know what was happening. This also happened at The Boys, N.Flying and Oneus on a much smaller scale. But at the PTD concerts I was handing out freebies and the freebie I handed out changed based on when you started stanning BTS. I was surprised at the amount of fans I talked to that this was not only their first BTS concert but their first concert in general and many of the fans started stanning BTS during covid. But overall the vibe was different most of the crowd didn't know any of the fanchants whereas before covid most of them did. I don't think there were a lot of disrespectful fans there it was just notable that they were new and didn't know as much including how concerts worked in general. In contrast, my first BTS concert I was a month into stanning them I had listened to all of their music and learned at least the basic fanchant. Luckily the Twice concert at SoFi was much more organized. While I have seen some of the behavior from the video especially the squishing the barricade at some kpop concerts, on the other side some of the best experiences I've had at concerts have been at Kpop shows. Like my friend's photocard fell at Enhypen and someone raced after her to give it to her.
I agree entirely that pop concerts are the least safe concerts I've been to especially for my ears which is why I have ear plugs specifically to protect my hearing and still be able to hear the concert. I will say that I think these concerts were also pretty unsafe pre-pandemic. I went to a lot of One Direction concerts and they've had stuff thrown at them since their first tour. Harry in particular has had so much thrown at him. On their first tour I saw videos of bras, tampons and even a didlo thrown at Harry (he was underage on that tour so extra gross). It's why he's so good at dodging stuff now but he shouldn't have to dodge stuff. I think the best concert I've seen where stuff was thrown on stage but not at the artists was NCT Dream. The fans threw hundreds of stuffed animals on stage and a fan gave Chenle a jersey of Stephan Curry his favorite basketball player. Jaemin was particularly adorable grabbing as many of the stuffies he could fit in his arms. I'd love to see more of that instead hitting artists with stuff.
I could keep going with so many more examples but this post is long enough. I think covid made people forget etiquette of how to behave in public or for the younger ones made it so they didn't learn. If you're going to watch videos in public use headphones. Don't play on your phones at concerts or in movie theaters. Don't shout or scream when an artist is talking. And just don't be rude, a little kindness and understanding can go a long way. My favorite concert experiences regardless of the genre or venue have been when the crowd is fully embracing the music. At a classical concert that is sitting silently and respectfully at metal concerts that is mosh pits and head banging. At other concerts e.g. rock/pop/Kpop concerts that is dancing and singing along. You can record videos but don't record every song enjoy the experience of actually watching the show.

glad to hear Enhypen and Stray Kids were good vibes because those are probably the only two kpop concerts I'd consider going to, after my overall negative experience with Blackpink crowds, so that's a relief lol
the BTS stuff makes a lot of sense too, even though it's a little frustrating
concert etiquette has always been hit or miss, especially with pop artists like you said, but I think since covid it's been the increasing frequency that's the problem 🙏

I haven't been to a big concert since I was like 14, but any small local shows I have seen in the last year were fine because it was all older crowds who've probably been going to shows longer than I've been alive. I've gone to concerts and shows of every other genre throughout my life, so concert ettiquette has never been something I haven't understood, so when the 2020s kicked off and people started going to shows when they started up again, I was very confused that not everyone understood how to behave? It just made sense to me and, forgive me, but I still feel like it's common sense to just... respect the people around you and not be a nuisance.
The behaviour I see in videos and talked about in text posts about people at bigger shows shocks me and I find the disrespect people have towards opening bands is particularly disgusting. They act as if they don't matter because they aren't the "main show". I remember a while back seeing some people I follow on Tumblr talking about being at a Blind Channel show and there were some fans there who were there _solely_ for Blind Channel. Not in the normal way where you don't know the opening acts at a show but you respectfully watch their performance, no. These girls were just scrolling through their phones throughout all of the opening band's set... while _in the front row_. It's so disrespectful!
And in this case, Blind Channel themselves have toured with and opened for _many_ other bands in their 10 years of making music and doing live shows -- these fans would surely go _BALLISTIC_ if they saw someone disrespecting them the way they were doing for the band that was touring with them (Lost Society, if I'm not mistaken, good tunes). Pretty sure they're _friends_ with the band that opened for them as well, imagine bringing a friend on tour with you and then seeing your own fans brush them off like that! I find it appalling.
I haven't been to a big metal show in my life despite listening to many of its subgenres, but I can confidently say I would feel 100000000% safer in a mosh pit than I would at a Blackpink concert. Someone gave me and my mom AC/DC tickets when they couldn't go when I was like 14 and I was nearly crushed on accident by adults twice my size, but I find that preferable to what you described 💀💀💀💀
TLDR: If you're just there to watch one single band through your phone screen and blatantly ignore/disrespect the presence of everyone else (including the audience you are a part of), you might as well just stay at home.

I have never had many chances to go to concerts mostly because I cannot afford it but I really thought it is common sense to act respectful to others and the artist but I'm CLEARLY mistaken 🤦‍♀️ All the stories I hear of what's happening at the venues recently is just appaling. Like you mentioned, I firmly believe we collectively "forgot how to human" during the pandemic. I noticed it in my city particularly when it comes to driving and road behaviour. One example to illustrate this. There's this cultural event here that happens at church each Easter. Of course for almost 2 years it was a lockdown so people couldn't garher there. But after the lockdown was lifted, next Easter came. So the service at my local church was happening every 30 min. Most people of course drove by cars. The church has a car park BUT the road leading to it is very narrow, cars literally cannot pass both directions at the same time. All my life I've seen people navigating that road no problem. Everyone knew how to make way for each other, even if there was a lot of cars. But that time right after pandemic? HOLY SHIT. Everyone got STUCK because cars wanted to go at the same time from like 3 directions and one idiot BLOCKED the road and didn't want to move. It got so bad my father literally walked out of our car and started leading the traffic like a policeman would. Only that way we managed to escape that hellhole. And since then I see it happening all over. Traffics get a lot worse cause people copletely forgot road etiquette.

I remember a video from Wacken Open Air where the artist called for a wall of death and this person with her kid was like "oh, free space" and got immediately clocked by mosh pit goers/wall of death enjoyers and as the wall was starting immediately ran to her and they were like four or six people going to her and the child, warning her, allowing her to get the kid in her arms and they entirely secured the area around her etc. So yeah, etiquette in metal/rock music goes beyond your own safety. If you see total noobs who don't get the cues, you entirely educate them. Those people who helped had no jacket marking them as any kind of staff. They were just *there* and decided to forego their fun in a wall of death to make sure a person who looked like a mother with a child were safe and understood the cues and the rules. I remember myself going to mosh, holding my big chest to avoid hurting myself on my bra's metal wiring and people asking me if I was ok afterwards or offering to hold my glasses because they weren't going.

At one point this woman in front of me turned around to yell at everyone for being too close; she was in the middle of a mosh and literally hundreds of people behind her were pushing forward, none of us had a choice in how close we were.
After that she proceeded to get mad at people for jumping during a song and "retaliate" by jumping on peoples feet, thrashing out of control, jumping out of time. Almost headbutted me due to jumping out of time.
And far too much filming. I was in the centre of the pit and it was just a sea of phones. But on a positive, it was incredibly cool to see them light up instead of lighters for songs where it suited.

This was an interesting video to watch coming from someone who grew up, wasn't aware/a fan of basically all music artists, apart from my bestie Selena Gomez 🤭, poor. The only concert I went to during adoslescence was to Panic at the disco, and that was only because one of my friends back then said she was able to get tickets. (Experience overall was ruined though because even tho the artist did go to where we were like in the grassy area behind the seats, I didn't even realize until they were leaving because all I could focus on was on how horrible our area smelled because the people next to us snuck inside drugs and were actively using them 🤢) Then the only other concert I went to was to my first BTS concert in 2019 in Chicago, which btw I'm still like sad that BTS had their concert ON THE SAME DAY AS TXT showcase. Experience definitely was better there, I bought seated tickets kinda close to the edge. Altho I also have not so good memories because I had to spend EVERY DOLLAR I HAD because since i decided to not bring my sweatpants, and it didn't stop raining and we only had ponchos we brought with us, I had to buy ourselves hoodies from their merch stall OUT OF MY OWN ACCOUNT. Because my older brother decided it was a good idea to give HIS CREDIT CARD to my YOUNGER sibling going with me, they ended up maxing it out on the kightstick and keychain they got, that when we needed to use said credit card for a neccesity to keep warm, It didn't go thru! And that's basically it, I would have liked to go to TXT concert recently but the tickets were so expensive 😫

You don't get people throwing things at the stage (as far as I know) but the phone use, illegal bootleggers, people talking, people singing along... to be clear, I know singing along is encouraged at concerts. It is not acceptable at musicals unless the cast in stage specifically ask the audience to participate. Oh and then there's the fights that start when those people are asked to stop their disrespectful behaviour. It's entitlement, plain and simple.

Yeah I’ve been to a few plays and musicals in the past year or two, and phones have been a huge issue. Probably at least half of them I’ve seen people either get on their phone/smart watch in the middle of the show or let their phone loudly ring in the theatre. One show probably had 3 separate people have their phones go off. Another had someone let their phone ring for like 10-15 seconds in the middle of what was supposed to be a quiet, poignant moment. It’s brutal.

I (short) got stuck behind two tall guys at a Sabaton show. Meh, can’t have a great view every time, c’est la vie. But as soon as they noticed me, they offered to let me in front of them so I could see better. Every concert attendee should aspire to be like those dudes - spatially aware and wanting those around you to enjoy the show as much as you are
I wonder if social media vids of things being thrown onstage put the idea into way more people’s heads, leading to more doing it unsafely. And gave people who rarely attend concerts the impression it’s very common and normal (I’ve only seen it happen once), so they think the musician is prepared for it

THE VAPING‼️ YES‼️ Ugh! Where I live in the USA vaping indoors IS illegal and yet IT ALWAYS HAPPENS at shows, though, people smoking green pisses me off more because of how severely it triggers my asthma & the fact they legitimately could still have a fun time, and just take edibles when in such crowded spaces- we already have to deal with our asthma vs fog machines, smoke from pyro & just exertion, people being apathetic & smoking drives me nuts.

If i go to a show it's usually the rock/metal/punk ones where there's usually not too many problems, maybe someones too drunk or they talk through the music (which is sadly pretty common in my country idk why). However i recently learned the difference between young and old crowds. 2 weeks ago i went to a prog rock show of a band that has been active since the 70's. Their audience is on average genuinely like 60 years old and i myself am 22 lol. It was a very small venue, small crowd, just an intimate concert overall. Old people are so respectful and appreciative. No one is trying to gain attention from the artists, they listen when the artists speak, barely anyone was filming and when there were 2 people talking too loud everyone started shushing and the people went outside for a while??? Because that's the normal thing to do??? If you'd shush a young person you'd probably get a shitty attitude back bc 'you don't tell me what to do'.

The actual concert was incredible but waiting in line was HORRID bcs not only was it cold, but the people in front of me in line would not stop badmouthing others. They kept saying things like "the people here are all teeny boppers they don't really care abt A.C.E. etc etc" like. TOUCH GRASS!!

I love concerts and go to several a year usually. I think most people are still aware of how to act at shows. But also people have been throwing shit on stages and acting like fools at concerts for a longggg time. It’s not new, it’s just getting more attention now.
I also personally believe that genre does matter. I go to bonnaroo and the crowds for rappers are way worse than most of the R&B or pop artist crowds. But at Korn this year I heard someone broke a leg and was left on the ground in the pit so metal crowds aren’t always great either. It just depends a lot on the crowd, the artist and the overall vibe of the venue.

I expect some artists will just set theatre rules for their performances, at the least enact ‘no phones until X song’ policies. Break the rules and you forfeit your seat/spot and are escorted to the rafters or outside.
Alternately have a ‘phones out’ area for people who can’t put their phones away, in the 75-90° range of center stage. No one gets forced into that seating so if you want better seats you have to comply with event rules.
Perhaps the rafter seats can also have an acoustic buffer suspended between them and the rest of the event? Is that extreme? Yes, but so is their audacity.
I’ve attended many ‘can’t see the artist from ADA seating’ because everyone in front of the area has their phones out above their heads.

I take my kid to every K-pop group that comes to town. It’s our thing and we have a whole routine (show up early if you want merch, hang out and make friends in the line. Do NOT get into fights with idiot fans who think they are going to marry one of the idols…) she does tend to film her favorite songs, but we don’t scream and the camera is down, not held up high. I have seen medical need to carry people out of the pit at every concert with a GA audience. I have seen police have to (quietly) deal with insane fans at Most concerts. Heck I take her to meet and greets and the stupidity of the fans there is bonkers. She has started saying she doesn’t want to go to certain concerts because of the fans…and that is sad. These are professional performers/artists who are amazing and fun to watch, but the level of delulu is off the charts.

1: i fear the day i encounter a concert with as nasty a crowd as these. Ive been very lucky with the few ive been to i think. The worst ive seen is people not respecting the ADA section post covid at a Dorian Electra concert(which i sit in) and standing in front of myself and others who CANT SEE OVER THEM??? But ive never seen shit like this.
2: pretty hair!!! Love it. Also that shirt where did u get it?
3: I went to a Mystery Skulls concert recently and it was great! Even when my disability flared really badly, the staff were so helpful and i was able to get back in right before the first song and it didnt fuck up anymore! The phone phenomena was still a thing which is always irritating, but at the very end of Mystery Skulls set they played Ghost, and like. We sang as a crowd. Singer had his mic off mostly, guided us a little bit to make sure we hit beats, but on GOD we didnt need it it was Spiritual in how we all knew and felt the music. Thats what i go to these for. It took a week to recover from sitting upright, but id do it all again just for those few minutes of unity. I wish i could share it with you all. Had me crying my makeup off lol.
Just wanted to share a good post covid concert experience. It was really beautiful.

The vaping at concerts is ssooooo annoying! I have bad ADHD, and having a large cloud of steam coming out of a person standing next to me constantly distracts me from the concert. Same with people who talk non-stop or sing louder than the artist, off-key, of course. It's gotten to the point that I don't go to festival shows anymore, because it always feels like half the people aren't there for the festival vibes and don't give a shit about the artist.

Happy to say the worst I got was someone enthusiastically whipping their hair around (and at me behind them). The phones were down, only occasional ones up to get some photos to remember.
Extra bonus, I got to buy a CD >:D. Only because of how much money I had did I not buy anything else, welp.

I just went to 2 concerts here is Columbus Ohio USA and they were both breathtaking and amazing and the audience was not anything like what you talked about. Ugh, yes to every word. I do definitely think there’s something to be said about autistic and adhd people unmasking during Covid (myself being one of them) and therefore getting distracted easier - and also those like you and I with chronic pain who struggle with even sitting for long periods of time, and I worry one day about someone judging me if I fidget etc HOWEVER despite me being a prime candidate for ‘reasonable allowance’ shall we say for not staying rock still, or having the energy to fully participate - I am so, SO aware that I, and others am there and have paid money, maybe have waited their whole lives for this experience - and to therefore NOT ACT LIKE A DICK. And the behaviour you’re talking about is entitled assholes who if they think it’s ok to openly disrespect an artist to their face, probably have no issue with being a bully online.. and that GETS ON MY LAST DAMN NERVE SO MUCH. And these assholes probably don’t realise how distracting their behaviour is to neurodivergent people who are struggling to concentrate for that long as it is, so keep getting pulled out of the experience! It’s not all about you! The selfishness drives me nuts. Someone kept replying to messages whilst I was watching Hamilton. HAMILTON. Renowned for its expensive seats. And it’s a deep fucking show. And I was so lucky to get the price I did, but it still wasn’t cheap. And every time that phone screen lit up, it pulled me out and I had the worst experience. They didn’t even try and cover it or turn the brightness down or think hey maybe.. if something is this important that I’m distracting hundreds of people around me - we were sat at the front of the 1st level - maybe I should leave and attend to that issue. Because either I’ve seen it enough times and don’t need to pay attention and or if I’m looking at my phone for THAT long, and not the show, I clearly don’t care, or I can probably afford to see it again. It really impacted me and pissed me off because this same person was just very loudly talking too, and if you know Hamilton… you just don’t do that. Anyway. 100% agree. People suck. And the people who are most physically incapable of staying in control of being distracted, etc are so worried we are ruining it for everyone else that we end up probably being more still and self aware than anyone else 😅
