- This passion project is my imagination of what Prehistoric music in the East Asian region sounded like 1.7 million years ago- during the time of the Yuanmou Man, the oldest human fossil found in Yunnan Province and a member of the Homo erectus classification before there were modern-day humans and countries.
My genetic background is predominantly from the Han Tribe in China. I'm 94% Chinese, 3% Korean, 2% Mongolian, and 1% Northern Indian/Pakistani. "Chinese" is not an ethnicity but a modern-day region/country- the people of China comprise 56 ethnic groups/tribes. 92% of today's Chinese are descendants of the Han people but this music pre-dates and transcends these tribes further into our shared ancestral DNA with all humankind.
This song was Co-written and Produced with my dear friend Steve Mazzaro, and features another incredibly talented friend, the amazing Nan Li (AKA @voodookungfu ) on vocals.
• What is the Water Phoenix? •
The Water Phoenix is both my "character" and the name of my new Tribal project. The first single I just released is self-titled as well. The Phoenix in ancient China, called Fenghuang, originally consisted of a separate male feng and a female huang as symbols of yin and yang. The male feng represented the yang aspect while the huang represented the yin aspect; together, the feng and huang image symbolized love between husband and wife. From the Qin dynasty, the Fenghuang progressively underwent feminization as the dragon became a symbol of masculinity. Eventually, the feng and the huang merged into a single female entity.
The body of the Chinese Phoenix symbolizes the celestial bodies: the head is the sky, the eyes are the sun, the back is the moon, the wings are the wind, the feet are the earth, and the tail is the planets. The fenghuang is said to have originated in the sun, and its body contains the five fundamental colors: black, white, red, yellow, and green. It sometimes carries scrolls or a box with sacred books and is sometimes depicted with a fireball.
In my mind, I saw a magnificent, giant golden bird with flames rising from its body and wings. She explodes forward violently through monstrous waves in a deep black sea, which is the inspiration behind the name.

Was looking through some of your videos like the theme from 1990s X-Men and the theme from the Wonder Woman live action movie and got me wondering did you guys ever do the theme for the 1980s Transformers or the old 84 GI Joe cartoon theme with those instruments? Was just curious I don't think anybody's eat done either of those shows using I'm pretty sure that's an electric cello and electric violin but I could be wrong was kind of trippy the X-Men one.And yes the irony is not lost on me giving my name and I'm talking about you guys doing the theme from X-Men

Lately, I have been watching and listening to a lot Otyken. They're modernized Siberian tribal music and are amazing. In some of their videos they someone on a two string cello, similar to what you have in the video but with a bull skull for its body. There are several songs that I would love to see/hear you thrown into the mix. Super addictive.... Like you Tina! 😘

I did a DNA test a few years ago because I wanted to find out if family stories of Cherokee ancestors were correct. Well, to make a long story short, nope! Not a hint of Cherokee! But I found out that I am mostly English, like 70 %, with French, Irish, Scottish, and about 15% Scandinavian, and 1 % "other", unknown I guess. It's interesting to think back into the distant past and imagine where our ancestors were, perhaps some of those English and French ancestors were enemies. Perhaps the Scandinavian ancestors were Vikings raiding in England or France. Perhaps far enough back our ancestors hated each other, and yet here we stand because some of them learned to live together, to love each other. That's just a little hope for our future. Ancestry and tribal identity only matters on the grand scale. Individuals matter locally.
Anyway, I thought I was going somewhere with this, but I got lost! Love the video, Tina! I always love your music!
