I just had to have those painted-on lower lashes! They were frowned upon in Senior year in a Catholic school, but I didn't care at all. I didn't want to look like other girls. I loved Twiggy, Jean Shrimpton, Pattie Boyd--those beautiful British girls. Thank you, Twiggy. You're a beautiful, caring woman.
She absolutely was the first super model! Everyone had heard of “Twiggy”, even if they didn’t give a fig about fashion. Like the narrator said ,”a household name”.
Re that black and white portrait photo at 1:47: those pronounced lower eyelashes, which became her signature makeup look, were not actual lashes, they were created by painting lines onto the skin with a black eyeliner brush. This was a new development in makeup, and every young woman at the time had a go at copying it. The painted-on lashes were not just reserved for special events; quite a few young women would do their eyes this way every day to go to work. I can confirm from my own experience that doing this yourself required a VERY steady hand, and was not at all easy to get right! The point of the look was to create a doll-like expression -- which accentuated Twiggy's gamine, naturally childlike facial features even more. Twiggy was the perfect model for the era. Her non-curvy "early teens" figure perfectly suited the angular, straight-line geometric fashions that were all the rage. Those awkward poses which we see her adopt in those photos broke with the norms of advertising which required models to look elegant. Her unconventional poses expressed innocence and naturalness -- as opposed to the self-conscious artifice of the curvy models of the 50s. For me the message that Twiggy conveyed through her looks was that young girls could become women without losing the freedom, ease and naturalness of childhood. We didn't need to lose our playfulness, our sense of freedom and wonder, just because we had grown up. It was a message of hopefulness and new horizons, especially for women who didn't fit the conventional female stereotype. We who were young then remember those days with real affection. We love Twiggy.
She's a month older than me ! 1949 was a GREAT year ( and I have my wife's permission to say so as she was born in the April). Not only beautiful she also sang " Here I go again" which I love. Stay young Twiggy.
I remember her very well when she became popular back in the sixties. In Germany she appeared in every youth magazine and in many fashion magazines. She had big influence on us girls wishing to wear modern fashion. German lifestyle at that time was very conservative.
She was my idol in high school! I was tall and thin and ha cute my hair very short as well. Thank you for helping me feel like a total outcast and almost fashionable!
She's still lovely and happily has not resorted to cosmetic surgery rather has shown that a healthy lifestyle may be the best way to aging beautifully. Thanks for this update, as I lived in London in the early 70s and used to see her around 😍☘
I remember Twiggy! Many of us Americans loved her. I am the same age as her. She was a great model and a humble, unassuming woman. Loved her then and do now! Glad she's done so well. God bless her.
TWIGGY. My favourite. I got her false lashes at a downtown dept store in Harrisburg, PENNSYLVANIA where I grew up. I had her TWIGGY MAGAZINE. I MODELLED FOR THE DEPT STORE WHERE I WAS WORKING AS A TELEPHONE OPERATOR. I MOVED TO NYC. WITHIN MONTHS I WAS IN US MAGAZINE, THEN AMERICAN GIRL MAGAZINE...I WAS ONE OF TOMMY HILFIGER'S FIRST MODELS..TWIGGY IS MY HEROINE👏👏👏💜 I THINK SHE WAS ON MY LATE PARTNER'S TALK SHOW, THE JOE FRANKLIN SHOW. She was born super cool, and never seemed to lose touch with real people, in spite of her decades of fame, and status as an icon. Loved her as a judge on top model.
as I was in her class at school, I can correct this point, the school was Brondesbury and Kilburn Girls Grammar School, in Willesden. She was clever. we studied german, music and art together. A great role model is great
I am the same age & as a teen expertly learned to draw TWIGGYS between my lower lashes..No spandex in clothing back then..Very hard to get the look if you were anything more then skinny
Yes. Jeanne Shrimpton was a rock star model in the mid-60s. She came to Portland, Oregon, in 1968. She made an appearance at Meier & Frank department store, and the police were there because the huge crowd of teenage fans caused a traffic jam. I was never a fan of Twiggy because she was way too bony.
As a kid in America I never heard of those other ladies, but I had heard of twiggy. You didn’t have to know or care about fashion to have heard of her, she was a ‘household name’ like the narrator said. Every woman, man, and child around the world had heard the name Twiggy!

It's that photo of her Iconic haircut to which I can not find the style on the left hand side. During lock down, I went on a mission to have a similar haircut.
I was mesmerised when I saw her beautiful face with super long eyelashes that were very heavy. She was unique and no one like her. She is such a beautiful woman
History reflects but not necessarily tells the whole story. I remember looking at my older sister’s fashion magazines. I was in high school and I emulated Twiggy’s look, but my body type was wrong I was short and built like Marilyn Monroe.
All that training wasn't wasted on her! "Hey, Ma, look at me now!" Definition of GORGEOUS! It sure wasn't wasted! (I wish I had held up that well, L O L )
I remember sitting in a Cape Town Cinema aged seventeen circa 1972 all on my own watching Twiggy in the film The Boyfriend in which she was very good, although she seemed much older than me she was only about 21 herself
I don't think her figure is unrealistic. I too am thin as twiggy was then, and I'm 68 yrs old. I have never been able to gain weight, and throughout my life I was often teased & still am because of it. It just goes to show you, that everyone is different and not everyone is suffering from obesity. Although obese people are more accepted than people who look like Twiggy. Most people also don't realize that the slurs that people use to devalue obese people, are no less painful, nor no less justified than the ones that are used to belittle, and devalue people of slighter build and frame. Like Twiggy have learned to embrace who I am. Ms. B. Churchill
@FactsVerseUK Someone here mentioned Jean Shrimpton. The 'Shrimp' was also very beautiful but I know little about her. It would be good to see a video about her.
