It's really important to note that the participants in this study were OBESE (average BMI of 32) and more than half of them were on statins and blood pressure meds. Both of the vegan diets were quite high in fat, and the EVOO group were consuming 400 calories MORE per day than the no-oil group. Also the "good" HDL dropped dramatically in the no oil group. Nothing in this study suggests there is any reason to reduce intake of EVOO in people who are not overweight and do not have high cholesterol.

And the methodology section clearly states they only recruited patients already at risk for CVD: "Adults 18 to 79 years at borderline to high risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease... were recruited from medical clinics." Also, 53% were taking cholesterol lowering meds, 60% were taking BP meds, and 33% were taking anticlotting meds. Dr. Barnard clearly did not read the study!

The WFPB group had a self-reported increased quality of life, they decreased their medication and blood glucose and their cholesterol dropped. The BROAD study, however, lasted only 3 months, yet the plant-based group not only lost significant weight, they kept it off. This study ran from August 2014 to 2015 and was extended to 2017.

It takes approxinately 44 olives to make 1 Tablespoon of olive oil. So in this study, the olive oil eaters would have consumed the equivalent of 160 whole olives. No one would consume that many olives in a day. Just eat a few whole olives, not olive oil.

I’m a recently diagnosed diabetic, vegan for 11 years (vegan for animals period) and vegetarian for 10 years before that. I was eating lots of process foods. Diet has changed drastically and now eating overwhelmingly Whole Foods and, of course, plant based. What I’m struggling with is your whole no nuts (you benefit tremendously from things like walnuts), no avocados (your brain needs healthy fats) and no 🫒s (which I love) stance.

For how long did it help I wonder? I tried that as well....at first it was great then my numbers went sky high in my blood work. My doctor was so concerned, kept calling me to put me on a myriad of medication. Stopped the high saturated fats immediately and never looked back. WFPB for me. My numbers are now excellent. I do believe people's genetics play a role and some people can handle saturated fats. Not me. Genetic testing demonstrated it.

So it’s not a one-size fits all scenario., not everyone experiences the pitfalls. Maybe you were not eating the fatty cuts of meats? Idk I prefer only lean cuts and I cut off all fat, skin & gristle so carnivore doesn’t appeal to me. I’m more of a seafood/fish eater (pescatarian).

I've also had amazing results from a Keto diet and my bloodwork confirms that. I reversed my type 2 diabetes. Most of my diet now consists of oily fish such as sardines and mackerel, eggs, green leafy vegetables, extra virgin olive oil, and I eat red meat 2-3 times a week. I know from my bloodwork that this video is bullshit.
Everyone is different. You have to eat what works for your body. As for the carnivore diet, I think it's great that they can eat that way and feel good and healthy now. I do believe though if you do carnivore 40, 50 Or 60 years, I believe you will get sick later.😢
UK BIOBANK STUDY: Looked at 300 people following a low carbohydrate (keto) diet and compared them to 1200 people on a standard diet. It concluded that the risk of having a heart attack, peripheral artery disease, and stroke was double that of those following the standard diet. Other things to note on a keto diet include: high cholesterol, constipation, and a smelly breath.
I’ve never found the guys who own the Zoe business particularly convincing. Or studies funded by the olive oil industry for that matter. Or claims that inconvenient scientific evidence is just the result of some dastardly plot by the seed oils industry. EVOO is undoubtedly better than butter, coconut oil, lard, mayonnaise and ordinary olive oil. But is it really the best option? The American Heart Association’s 2017 scientific report on dietary fats and cardiovascular disease concluded that polyunsaturated fats were better than monounsaturated fats and both were significantly better than saturated fats. It also stated “Finally, we note that a trial has never been conducted to test the effect on CHD outcomes of a low-fat diet that increases intake of healthful nutrient-dense carbohydrates and fiber-rich foods such as whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and legumes that are now recommended in dietary guidelines.” To my knowledge, this remains case and polyunsaturated fats (and possibly healthy carbs) are still a better option than EVOO.
The Low Olive Oil group in this study ate a 23% calorie restricted diet compared to the other group, totaling only 1338kcal/day, compared to 1745 kcal/day for High Olive Oil group. They did not state these numbers in the paper itself, you have to download the supplemental data file/pdf to find it. Neither did they articulate these differences in the conclusions. This interview does not discuss this fact about the study either. Totally irresponsible. ..What this means? The changes the study found between the diets may simply be due to the extreme calorie restriction, and not due to the lower intake of Olive Oil. For all we know, if it had been an isocaloric study, the results could be opposite.

@@larsnystrom6698 It's impossible to eat zero fat if you're eating vegetables, fruits and starches. Every whole food has fats, proteins and carbs. Spinach for instance is around 12% fat and oats around 15%, these are all the omega's 3's and 6's in the correct ratio's. Furthermore only the fat in plants reaches the GLP receptor at the end of your small intestine, other fats don't reach this signaling receptor (interview with dr. Garth Davis on Ozempec), which firms my believe that we should get all the fats from plant sources.
There is no such thing as a zero fat diet because absolutely every food has some fat in it. We need some essential fatty acids to live. You would die on a zero fat diet but again, you won't because everything has fat.
You can't live with zero fat! And you can not eat without getting some of these fats! I'm 55 still looking like I did in my 30s! But I'm extremely physical and a bodybuilder as well as a lot of arobic exercise and have to have a certain amount of fats to function.
Google the EPIC study. In Spain the participants who ate only pure EVOO (which is not mixed with seed oils) showed decreased risk of coronary heart disease as well as all cause cardiovascular mortality. They also did the study on a group of Italians post MI.
Thats strange because I went keto and then to carnivore with lots of sat fat and my cholesterol actually went down. When I tried the vegan diet for 9 months my body was inflammation and I felt like shit. So much that i quit after 9 months. I had a steak that same day and it felt like I was reborn. As for your comment about mother nature, she didnt make any of the fruit or vegetables that we all eat today. Man created nearly all of it. Not to mention its seasonal.

I"m 75, vegan for over a year, no oil of any type. My only vice is peanut butter....I eat 3 tbsp daily. If I didn't spread it on my snack of Ezekiel bread slice or Wasa cracker I would blow away: I don't need to lose another ounce of weight. I eat 1 1/2 cups black beans daily, two half cup servings of oatmeal daily with walnuts and flaxseeds, the higher density plant foods. Don't know how else to add enough calories from plant food to maintain weight.
Remember this is one point of view. There are other wfpb and plant predominant doctors and researchers who see the issue differently. Some even interpret this same study differently. (see Zoe) I would recommend listening to The Proof with Simon Hill. He's amazing and he has amazing guests. Also, Dr Joel Kahn, wfpb cardiologists points to the Predimed study which established olive oil as supportive of cardiovascular health. I think considering your great diet and your low weight one or two tablespoons of olive oil would not be a problem. Another option is avocados. Also, I agree w the other commenter. I'm 71 and have become aware that protein needs increase at this age. I now consume a pure pea protein and eat tempeh and some soy milk.

FOOD HABITS IN LATER LIFE STUDY was undertaken among five cohorts in Japan, Sweden, Greece and Australia. Legumes were found to be the most important dietary predictor of survival in older people of different ethnicities. The results showed that for every 20 grams (one ounce) increase in daily legumes intake there was an 8% reduction in the risk of death. This study shows that no matter what your ethnic background or where you live, eat more legumes to live longer, especially as you age. Of all the food groups including meat, legumes alone had consistent and statistically significant results.

I've found no evidence that he was a cardiovascular surgeon, but he was a general surgeon; also that he was heavily involved in preventative medicine particularly cardiovascular. I really like him a follow his diet as I have cardiovascular disease. I'm wondering weather a little extra virgin olive oil for salad dressing would be ok for me. I'm really interested in what the evidence says, so many conflicting views.

Circa minute 32:00, the obvious solution is to avoid SALTED or SWEETENED or ROASTED nuts and seeds (and any other such foods generally). If you eat raw nuts and seeds and chew well, you will find that you become satiated quickly. You have to chew thoroughly to get the most nutritional value from real whole foods. The longer that you spend chewing, the faster you become satisfied with less. Double win!
Couple of thoughts: 1. The study does not note if the calories were equalized during the two phases, weight loss could have affected cholesterol scores. 2. Four weeks is not nearly long enough to reach a new cholesterol baseline. A diet with EVOO may reduce LDL more slowly, but you can’t infer that such a diet is incapable of having an overall similar effect over a longer period of time. 3. The study noted a slower LDL lowering effect on EVOO, but the overwhelming preponderance of data shows notable benefits to EVOO use for cardiovascular health.
@@adribones I may have heard wrong but I thought the 4 weeks was a down time between switching the diets. I wasn't listening that closely so may have missed the length of time while consuming or not consuming oil. I know my cholesterol dropped 40 points in 4 weeks when I eliminated eggs. ( The only animal product I was still occasionally consuming.)
I've been a clean eating vegan for 50 years, including fresh ground flax and chia seeds and walnuts most days (I make milk for oats and blueberries). I took a EPA/DHA levels test a year ago, the result was 3, well below the expected healthy range. I started taking a supplement and my cognizance performance jumped as measured by the brain game apps I use Elevate and Lumosity, and my conversations have been so much more lively and facile.
For cooking bean patties and such that using liquid to prevent sticking will ruin the pattie, you could try heating the pan to water ball temp before adding rhe pattie. I haven't personally tried this yet with a pattie but it does work good for sauteing without added liquid. I so seldom use oil spray that i dont worry about using some for cooking patties. If you arent familiar with water ball test, look for video on cooking with a stainless steel pan to prevent sticking.

The 7th day Adventists are often studied because they are health conscious, don’t drink alcohol or smoke, and eagerly participate in studies. ADVENTIST HEALTH STUDY 2 showed the more milk the Adventists consumed the higher the breast cancer. This study was confirmed by a study in China, CHINA KADOORIE BIOBANK STUDY. The Conclusion: The more dairy you consume the higher your breast cancer risk. ¼ cup/day of milk increases breast cancer risk by 17%.
American Institute for Cancer Research: “For the best estimate of the risk of breast cancer associated with milk consumption, take a look at the American Institute for Cancer Research/World Cancer Research Fund analyses, which show no increased risk with higher milk consumption.” Looking at only one study isn't good science. Claiming that it's "the truth" is just wrong!

@@larsnystrom6698 Trust the science. A Harvard study: Association of Animal and Plant Protein Intake With All-Cause and Cause Specific Mortality. Researchers brought in a large group of people and they looked at the protein they ate and who lived and who died. They controlled for the cholesterol and the fat so they could look just at the effect of the protein. Conclusion: Animal protein is always associated with higher mortality. Plant protein was inversely associated with all cause mortality.
Olive Oil has been around for thousands of years. My bet is it safe. Certainly better than seed oils that have been around 100 years Today's issue though is many brands of Olive Oil are cut with seed oils
Olive oil drives up my LDL. Two different times (years apart), my LDL went from 90 to almost 120 mg/dL by adding two tablespoons/day of olive for about four months. I did this both times after returning to the gym after a sedentary period. I added the olive oil to increase my calories required by an increase in exercise. I must be very sensitive to saturated fat. By how I eat, my LDL should easily be below 60 mg/dL.
It will drive up your LDL ...and if you're a diabetic, it will drive up your fasting glucose numbers too. Too much added oil in a person's diet over a long period of time, will cause insulin resistance aka Type 2 diabetes. Dr. Barnard touched on that in this episode.

Did I hear this wrong? At 18:20 he says something like "...and then they tried a health fat and you know that palm oil is full of saturated fat canola oil much lower very much like olive oil but..." So he talking about a study that used canola oil here and is extrapolating its results to olive oil. Right? If so, the connection he wants to make on this point is a conjecture. Seems like you folks should be more rigorous than this or am I expecting too much?
What's the confusion? It's simple. Expressed oils are not good for you. Get the best oils from food naturally the way nature intended (avocado, nuts & seeds, etc.).
4 tablespoons of olive oil! That’s a huge amount of oil. I use a single tablespoon of home made olive and vinegar dressing for an entire salad and the salad is split at least two ways. There is seldom another source of oil in my diet. I can’t imagine adding that much oil…
pure oil is something the body doesn't know how to use. It takes these large clumps of oil from the middle of the body to the surface of the skin - causing well documented damage along the way. Imagine the work the body has to go through at a molecular level to make it travel multiple feet? It's astounding!!

The thing they're not saying is by concentrating olives into olive oils , you get a much higher concentration of polyphenols as well .... Eating just a few olives here and there won't generate the desired health benefit effects .
I would agree with this,to get any real benefits from eating olives you would have to consume a considerable amount of olives and this would not be to everyones taste.🤔
Personally, I'm IN the NO OIL camp. Oil is processed, and though I'm not a big fan of olives, as pointed out by someone else in the Comments, I think it is better just to eat the olives (better for the environment too). I like OIL just like anyone (especially used in a stir fry or salad dressing), but I think the NO OIL camp of Esselstyn, McDougal and Peter Rogers (among others) are right.
Just checked fat content of my organic milled flaxseeds from Walmart...2 tbsp serving has 5 grams total fat, ZERO grams saturated. Reason I switched from hemp and chia seeds which have much higher fat profiles. And much cheaper too!

I consume fresh ground flax and chia seeds with my oatmeal and berries and ground spices. I make milk to go with it from walnuts. Is that one of the conflicting fats that binds the flax EPA/DHA nutrition from absorption?
Very different argument from Dr. Tim Spector in the UK about the benefits of olive oil in large qualities based on studies of European residents. But those stress the importance of high-quality extra-virgin olive oil.
1 tablespoon of olive oil has 120 calories and 2 grams of saturated fat. 2 grams of saturated fat has @ 18 calories. 18 divided by 120 is @ 15%. So 15% of the calories in olive oil are from saturated fat.
He is sort of a quack. He also deals in hyperbole 90% of the time. I use olive oil on a daily basis. I am 60 years old with zero health issues. I will continue to use olive oil.

Prefer to get my medical advice from doctors who look healthy. Automatically sceptical if they look like they've just finished a course of chemotherapy. And the no animal products, no saturated fats, anti-cholesterol drive he is on looks increasingly weak. Conversely, highly processed seed oils have an abundance of research showing how fundamentally unhealthy they are for the human body.
Olive leaf extract, if you buy a high quality supplement, is excellent for many conditions. I keep a nice brand in my cabinet & take as needed. Great stuff.
I think the focus must be to VLDL type of cholesterol like apo a and b , other important thing is missed in this study and others is looking to other inflammatory markers like CRF , Most of this studies done these days gust for the publication purposes
one website's saying that olive leaves have 60x more antioxidants and 30x more polyphenolic compounds than olive oil!! (this is from the olive life daily's website). Who knows - maybe one day people will start adding ripped olive leaves to their salads and smoothies or something!! It tastes like olives minus the fat and more of the taste. And yes - you can really taste the polyphenols in it!! It's also like eating olive oil minus the oil lol and more fiber too.

Rutin is the top polyphenol in olive oil - which is great for eyesight. However, if there's 60 times more polyphenols in leaves - along with chlorophyll and fiber - just imagine how great for eyesight leaves are! I'm so glad that leaves were brought up - I could imagine a whole presentation about the nutritional value of olives vs leaves vs oil one day by some youtube video, whether it's this channel or another tbh.

Been mostly WFPB for over 30 years and include olive oil, nuts and other fats but certainly not four tablespoons. My cholesterol has always been low (in fact the first time I had it checked they didn't believe it because the person taking it had never gotten one that low, it was 111) and I made it age 65 without any of the chronic diseases plaguing people in my age bracket. My issues revolve around work stress as a nurse and sleep issues, but I'm not changing my diet. I think if I had health issues I would be a lot more strict than I am.
If I could get the same result roasting my veggies with olive oil as without any olive oil, I would. Plain roasted veggies come out dry and unappealing. Suggestions?

I just watched your video about omitting olive oil. I'm a still-fat 10yr vegan, 61yrs old, so the info is important to me. Then, the next video I watched is on 'The Nerve Doctors' channel on UA-cam, who showed the New England Journal of Medicine study showing that Med Diet participants who consumed around 4Tbs extra virgin olive oil daily improved cardiovascular outcomes and lowered incidence of cardiovascular disease. I'm SO SICK of all the back and forth of conflicting studies and reports. What the ever-loving heck? Also saw a channel with a heart surgeon advocating a full carnivore diet to dissipate arterial plaques, with patients to prevent works. Again, what the ever-loving HECK? I am vegan for ethics, but I feel like either no one knows the REAL truth, or both approaches work. I'm lost... Help!

UK BIOBANK STUDY: Looked at 300 people following a low carbohydrate high fat (keto) diet and compared them to 1200 people on a standard diet. It concluded that the risk of having a heart attack, peripheral artery disease, and stroke was double that of those following the standard diet. Other things to note on a keto diet include: high cholesterol, constipation, and a smelly breath.

This is not new information, just updated. Theres thousands and thousands of plant-based whole foods that are great for you. Just getting out of the hype we had to grow up with is the hard part. Eating healthy is easy once you’re on track.
however there are many differences between one type of olive oil and another and therefore also in terms of nutritional values, especially based on the treatment undergone, whether it is cold or hot pressed, the degree of ripeness of the olives, then extra virgin or virgin are important differences, I don't know much about it but I know that this also determines the nutritional values a lot
Guys, this is old school thinking, demonizing saturated fat, trying to get 'cholesterol' down, its all pretty old advice that is likely wrong. Doctors got us into this mess, with this same advice.
Recently I went to an olive growing area and bought loose leaf olive leaf tea to give it a try. I don't yet know it's benefits, but I love it's taste. Very delicious.
I lost weight fast when I eat salad without olive oil than with olive oil. One thing we forget when it comes to fat is the bile. When the liver does not produce enough bile due to detoxification pathways not functioning optimally. Bile is needed to break down fat in smaller size for the body to digest it.
I am lucky enough to be born, and have family in, a sunkissed island village in the med where my relatives grew their own olives and pressed their own olive oil themselves in small groups so I know what the real stuff actually tastes like despite what the price tag and the blurb on the labels would have you believe. In the UK where I live I only know of one product that looks/smells/tastes like the real thing and I only use it cold and never heat it up (as according to some people heating any oils to high temperatures can create nasty compounds that are really bad for you).
31:11 sunflower seeds, from what I know - has more vitamin e than almonds with less of the negatives for environmental impacts of them - like high water usage. I know there's not really cyanide in almonds on shelves, but I still worry about that. That's not in sunflowers. There's something else about sunflowers that make them nutritionally superior - and that's that you can use more of the sunflower than almonds. While you can eat the almond fruit, sunflowers have the leaves that're edible, as well as the head - which emmymade shows that is like eating an artichoke. So you're getting a lot of food with the sunflower that's low in fat too that makes up practically a complete meal! Sunflower petal tea sounds pretty nice, but I do eat the petals fresh preferably.
Bogus: Dr. Barnard said olive oil is better than coconut oil because olive oil has less saturated fat. BUT is there a research study which shows that saturated fat is bad? Where is that study?
Here is the problem, when we all ate saturated fat daily, we were all thin and healthy. You can easily look at pictures from the past. Also, the higher you cholesterol the longer you live! So this means olive is super healthy.
Barnard mentions bologna sandwich versus peanut butter sandwich and fails to mention that sandwich is bread. Processed flour, and too many refined grains are thought to contribute to health problems and should be avoided by those with gluten intolerance. Gluten's peptides which are the amino acids that make up proteins are resistant to our stomach acid making them much harder for people to digest.
I once did taste a soft brownisch olive which did fall down from an olive tree ... it tasted great and I wondered why that is never sold in shops. Does someone know more about this?
Oh well, the ice shark has a life span of 500 years. In all these years he swims very very slowly through the ice-cold darkness and he feeds off of the plankton that ends up in his mouth. It is a very long, natural and quiet life. Do you envy him ? I personally don`t. And I don't envy this skinny nutrition professor that fears for his health for eating a handful of walnuts. Olive oil is ultraprocessed junk food with no fiber or pulp. The fat has been concentrated to 100% and put in a bottle. A whole olive is the nutritious unrefined food that nature makes.

An anecdote doesn't discredit a study.
It's really important to note that the participants in this study were OBESE (average BMI of 32) and more than half of them were on statins and blood pressure meds. Both of the vegan diets were quite high in fat, and the EVOO group were consuming 400 calories MORE per day than the no-oil group. Also the "good" HDL dropped dramatically in the no oil group. Nothing in this study suggests there is any reason to reduce intake of EVOO in people who are not overweight and do not have high cholesterol.

At the 9:23 mark of the podcast, Dr Barnard mentions “they were healthy people.” So, I am not arguing but just wondering where did you get your information about these participants from?
@@allee3476 It's in the data: "Table S1 Baseline Comparisons of Demographic and Clinical Outcomes by Diet Order Randomization" lists the average BMI for participants as 31.9. And the methodology section clearly states they only recruited patients already at risk for CVD: "Adults 18 to 79 years at borderline to high risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease... were recruited from medical clinics." Also, 53% were taking cholesterol lowering meds, 60% were taking BP meds, and 33% were taking anticlotting meds. Dr. Barnard clearly did not read the study!

Outcome: The WFPB diet can be seen as an effective, safe option for weight loss and chronic disease risk and quality of life improvements. Key foods included whole grains, legumes, vegetables and fruits.
No mandated exercise or calorie counting was implemented.
The WFPB group had a self-reported increased quality of life, they decreased their medication and blood glucose and their cholesterol dropped. The plant-based group had left the 3-month study 19 pounds lighter, but at 6 months were down about 27 lbs. The BROAD study, however, lasted only 3 months, yet the plant-based group not only lost significant weight, they kept it off. This study ran from August 2014 to 2015 and was extended to 2017.

It takes approxinately 44 olives to make 1 Tablespoon of olive oil. So in this study, the olive oil eaters would have consumed the equivalent of 160 whole olives. No one would consume that many olives in a day. Just eat a few whole olives, not olive oil.

Could we focus a bit on weight gain too? If nuts are mostly bad because of weight gain, I want them, but concern for people who want to gain weight seems lacking here.
I'd opt for avocado's and watch if nuts aren't rancid. Especially Poly Unsaturated Fats get very toxic when they are rancid with hydroxynonenal.

I’m a recently diagnosed diabetic, vegan for 11 years (vegan for animals period) and vegetarian for 10 years before that. I was eating lots of process foods. Diet has changed drastically and now eating overwhelmingly Whole Foods and, of course, plant based. What I’m struggling with is your whole no nuts (you benefit tremendously from things like walnuts), no avocados (your brain needs healthy fats) and no 🫒s (which I love) stance.

For how long did it help I wonder? I tried that as well....at first it was great then my numbers went sky high in my blood work. My doctor was so concerned, kept calling me to put me on a myriad of medication. Stopped the high saturated fats immediately and never looked back. WFPB for me. My numbers are now excellent. I do believe people's genetics play a role and some people can handle saturated fats. Not me. Genetic testing demonstrated it.

So it’s not a one-size fits all scenario., not everyone experiences the pitfalls. Maybe you were not eating the fatty cuts of meats? Idk I prefer only lean cuts and I cut off all fat, skin & gristle so carnivore doesn’t appeal to me. I’m more of a seafood/fish eater (pescatarian).

I've also had amazing results from a Keto diet and my bloodwork confirms that. I reversed my type 2 diabetes. Most of my diet now consists of oily fish such as sardines and mackerel, eggs, green leafy vegetables, extra virgin olive oil, and I eat red meat 2-3 times a week. I know from my bloodwork that this video is bullshit.

I’ve never found the guys who own the Zoe business particularly convincing. Or studies funded by the olive oil industry for that matter. Or claims that inconvenient scientific evidence is just the result of some dastardly plot by the seed oils industry.
EVOO is undoubtedly better than butter, coconut oil, lard, mayonnaise and ordinary olive oil. But is it really the best option?
The American Heart Association’s 2017 scientific report on dietary fats and cardiovascular disease concluded that polyunsaturated fats were better than monounsaturated fats and both were significantly better than saturated fats. It also stated “Finally, we note that a trial has never been conducted to test the effect on CHD outcomes of a low-fat diet that increases intake of healthful nutrient-dense carbohydrates and fiber-rich foods such as whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and legumes that are now recommended in dietary guidelines.” To my knowledge, this remains case and polyunsaturated fats (and possibly healthy carbs) are still a better option than EVOO.
Yes I think this "Dr." is being paid by special interests to push this agenda. It is total BS.
The Low Olive Oil group in this study ate a 23% calorie restricted diet compared to the other group, totaling only 1338kcal/day, compared to 1745 kcal/day for High Olive Oil group. They did not state these numbers in the paper itself, you have to download the supplemental data file/pdf to find it. Neither did they articulate these differences in the conclusions. This interview does not discuss this fact about the study either. Totally irresponsible. ..What this means? The changes the study found between the diets may simply be due to the extreme calorie restriction, and not due to the lower intake of Olive Oil. For all we know, if it had been an isocaloric study, the results could be opposite.

@@larsnystrom6698 It's impossible to eat zero fat if you're eating vegetables, fruits and starches. Every whole food has fats, proteins and carbs. Spinach for instance is around 12% fat and oats around 15%, these are all the omega's 3's and 6's in the correct ratio's. Furthermore only the fat in plants reaches the GLP receptor at the end of your small intestine, other fats don't reach this signaling receptor (interview with dr. Garth Davis on Ozempec), which firms my believe that we should get all the fats from plant sources.
There is no such thing as a zero fat diet because absolutely every food has some fat in it. We need some essential fatty acids to live. You would die on a zero fat diet but again, you won't because everything has fat.
You can't live with zero fat! And you can not eat without getting some of these fats! I'm 55 still looking like I did in my 30s! But I'm extremely physical and a bodybuilder as well as a lot of arobic exercise and have to have a certain amount of fats to function.
The sad thing is some doctors say olive oil is good, and others say it's not. Like they do with other foods.

Google the EPIC study. In Spain the participants who ate only pure EVOO (which is not mixed with seed oils) showed decreased risk of coronary heart disease as well as all cause cardiovascular mortality. They also did the study on a group of Italians post MI.

Thats strange because I went keto and then to carnivore with lots of sat fat and my cholesterol actually went down. When I tried the vegan diet for 9 months my body was inflammation and I felt like shit. So much that i quit after 9 months. I had a steak that same day and it felt like I was reborn. As for your comment about mother nature, she didnt make any of the fruit or vegetables that we all eat today. Man created nearly all of it. Not to mention its seasonal.

I follow a lot of podcasts and they are hit or miss. Sometimes I listen, other times I miss them. With Chuck and Dr Barnard I am always going to listen - I learn a lot, respect them entirely and find them so very easy and pleasant. Vegan for about 15 years now and always tweaking with new studies and data which are presented so well. Would love to hear more about diets and changes needed for those of us in their 70s and beyond. Nutritional needs change.

The EPIC-OXFORD STUDY, part of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition, examined the diets and health outcomes of over 65,000 participants. It found that vegetarians had a significantly lower risk of coronary heart disease compared to meat-eaters.
I"m 75, vegan for over a year, no oil of any type. My only vice is peanut butter....I eat 3 tbsp daily. If I didn't spread it on my snack of Ezekiel bread slice or Wasa cracker I would blow away: I don't need to lose another ounce of weight. I eat 1 1/2 cups black beans daily, two half cup servings of oatmeal daily with walnuts and flaxseeds, the higher density plant foods. Don't know how else to add enough calories from plant food to maintain weight.
Well, there are plant protein powders, be careful to make sure that they are all tested for heavy metals.
Remember this is one point of view. There are other wfpb and plant predominant doctors and researchers who see the issue differently. Some even interpret this same study differently. (see Zoe) I would recommend listening to The Proof with Simon Hill. He's amazing and he has amazing guests. Also, Dr Joel Kahn, wfpb cardiologists points to the Predimed study which established olive oil as supportive of cardiovascular health. I think considering your great diet and your low weight one or two tablespoons of olive oil would not be a problem. Another option is avocados.
Also, I agree w the other commenter. I'm 71 and have become aware that protein needs increase at this age. I now consume a pure pea protein and eat tempeh and some soy milk.

FOOD HABITS IN LATER LIFE STUDY was undertaken among five cohorts in Japan, Sweden, Greece and Australia. Legumes were found to be the most important dietary predictor of survival in older people of different ethnicities. The results showed that for every 20 grams (one ounce) increase in daily legumes intake there was an 8% reduction in the risk of death. This study shows that no matter what your ethnic background or where you live, eat more legumes to live longer, especially as you age. Of all the food groups including meat, legumes alone had consistent and statistically significant results.

I've found no evidence that he was a cardiovascular surgeon, but he was a general surgeon; also that he was heavily involved in preventative medicine particularly cardiovascular. I really like him a follow his diet as I have cardiovascular disease. I'm wondering weather a little extra virgin olive oil for salad dressing would be ok for me. I'm really interested in what the evidence says, so many conflicting views.

Circa minute 32:00, the obvious solution is to avoid SALTED or SWEETENED or ROASTED nuts and seeds (and any other such foods generally). If you eat raw nuts and seeds and chew well, you will find that you become satiated quickly. You have to chew thoroughly to get the most nutritional value from real whole foods. Couple of thoughts:
1. The study does not note if the calories were equalized during the two phases, weight loss could have affected cholesterol scores.
2. Four weeks is not nearly long enough to reach a new cholesterol baseline. A diet with EVOO may reduce LDL more slowly, but you can’t infer that such a diet is incapable of having an overall similar effect over a longer period of time.
3. The study noted a slower LDL lowering effect on EVOO, but the overwhelming preponderance of data shows notable benefits to EVOO use for cardiovascular health.

I wasn't listening that closely so may have missed the length of time while consuming or not consuming oil.
I know my cholesterol dropped 40 points in 4 weeks when I eliminated eggs. ( The only animal product I was still occasionally consuming.)

I've been a clean eating vegan for 50 years, including fresh ground flax and chia seeds and walnuts most days (I make milk for oats and blueberries). I took a EPA/DHA levels test a year ago, the result was 3, well below the expected healthy range. I started taking a supplement and my cognizance performance jumped as measured by the brain game apps I use Elevate and Lumosity, and my conversations have been so much more lively and facile.

For cooking bean patties and such that using liquid to prevent sticking will ruin the pattie, you could try heating the pan to water ball temp before adding rhe pattie.
I haven't personally tried this yet with a pattie but it does work good for sauteing without added liquid.
I so seldom use oil spray that i dont worry about using some for cooking patties.
If you arent familiar with water ball test, look for video on cooking with a stainless steel pan to prevent sticking.

Actually I just stopped olive oil and all oils. We do not need it. It's man made. Instead, I can eat a couple of olives or avocado. We do not need so much fat in our bodies. I like being slim, light, and feeling good! 🙏⚘️💕

Olive Oil has been around for thousands of years. My bet is it safe. Certainly better than seed oils that have been around 100 years Today's issue though is many brands of Olive Oil are cut with seed oils
Olive oil drives up my LDL. Two different times (years apart), my LDL went from 90 to almost 120 mg/dL by adding two tablespoons/day of olive for about four months. I did this both times after returning to the gym after a sedentary period. I added the olive oil to increase my calories required by an increase in exercise. I must be very sensitive to saturated fat. By how I eat, my LDL should easily be below 60 mg/dL.
It will drive up your LDL ...and if you're a diabetic, it will drive up your fasting glucose numbers too. Too much added oil in a person's diet over a long period of time, will cause insulin resistance aka Type 2 diabetes. Dr. Barnard touched on that in this episode.

What's the confusion? It's simple. Expressed oils are not good for you. Get the best oils from food naturally the way nature intended (avocado, nuts & seeds, etc.).
4 tablespoons of olive oil! That’s a huge amount of oil. I use a single tablespoon of home made olive and vinegar dressing for an entire salad and the salad is split at least two ways. There is seldom another source of oil in my diet. I can’t imagine adding that much oil…

The thing they're not saying is by concentrating olives into olive oils , you get a much higher concentration of polyphenols as well .... Eating just a few olives here and there won't generate the desired health benefit effects .

Personally, I'm IN the NO OIL camp. Oil is processed, and though I'm not a big fan of olives, as pointed out by someone else in the Comments, I think it is better just to eat the olives (better for the environment too). I like OIL just like anyone (especially used in a stir fry or salad dressing), but I think the NO OIL camp of Esselstyn, McDougal and Peter Rogers (among others) are right.
Just checked fat content of my organic milled flaxseeds from Walmart...2 tbsp serving has 5 grams total fat, ZERO grams saturated. Reason I switched from hemp and chia seeds which have much higher fat profiles. And much cheaper too!

Very different argument from Dr. Tim Spector in the UK about the benefits of olive oil in large qualities based on studies of European residents. But those stress the importance of high-quality extra-virgin olive oil.
On the olive 🫒 oil bottle, it says total fat 14%, saturated fat 2%. Why does Dr. Barnard keep saying 14% saturated fat?
1 tablespoon of olive oil has 120 calories and 2 grams of saturated fat. 2 grams of saturated fat has @ 18 calories. 18 divided by 120 is @ 15%. So 15% of the calories in olive oil are from saturated fat.
He is sort of a quack. He also deals in hyperbole 90% of the time. I use olive oil on a daily basis. I am 60 years old with zero health issues. I will continue to use olive oil.

one website's saying that olive leaves have 60x more antioxidants and 30x more polyphenolic compounds than olive oil!! (this is from the olive life daily's website). Who knows - maybe one day people will start adding ripped olive leaves to their salads and smoothies or something!! It tastes like olives minus the fat and more of the taste. And yes - you can really taste the polyphenols in it!! It's also like eating olive oil minus the oil lol and more fiber too.

Rutin is the top polyphenol in olive oil - which is great for eyesight. However, if there's 60 times more polyphenols in leaves - along with chlorophyll and fiber - just imagine how great for eyesight leaves are! I'm so glad that leaves were brought up - I could imagine a whole presentation about the nutritional value of olives vs leaves vs oil one day by some youtube video, whether it's this channel or another tbh.

Been mostly WFPB for over 30 years and include olive oil, nuts and other fats but certainly not four tablespoons. My cholesterol has always been low (in fact the first time I had it checked they didn't believe it because the person taking it had never gotten one that low, it was 111) and I made it age 65 without any of the chronic diseases plaguing people in my age bracket. My issues revolve around work stress as a nurse and sleep issues, but I'm not changing my diet. I think if I had health issues I would be a lot more strict than I am.
If I could get the same result roasting my veggies with olive oil as without any olive oil, I would. Plain roasted veggies come out dry and unappealing. Suggestions?

I just watched your video about omitting olive oil. I'm a still-fat 10yr vegan, 61yrs old, so the info is important to me. Then, the next video I watched is on 'The Nerve Doctors' channel on UA-cam, who showed the New England Journal of Medicine study showing that Med Diet participants who consumed around 4Tbs extra virgin olive oil daily improved cardiovascular outcomes and lowered incidence of cardiovascular disease.

This is not new information, just updated. Theres thousands and thousands of plant-based whole foods that are great for you. Just getting out of the hype we had to grow up with is the hard part. Eating healthy is easy once you’re on track.

however there are many differences between one type of olive oil and another and therefore also in terms of nutritional values, especially based on the treatment undergone, whether it is cold or hot pressed, the degree of ripeness of the olives, then extra virgin or virgin are important differences, I don't know much about it but I know that this also determines the nutritional values a lot

Vegan algal oil. The fish dont make the omega-3's they eat the algae. So cut out the middlefish and take the algal oil.

Guys, this is old school thinking, demonizing saturated fat, trying to get 'cholesterol' down, its all pretty old advice that is likely wrong. Doctors got us into this mess, with this same advice.
Recently I went to an olive growing area and bought loose leaf olive leaf tea to give it a try. I don't yet know it's benefits, but I love it's taste. Very delicious.

I lost weight fast when I eat salad without olive oil than with olive oil.
One thing we forget when it comes to fat is the bile. When the liver does not produce enough bile due to detoxification pathways not functioning optimally. Bile is needed to break down fat in smaller size for the body to digest it.
What kind of olive oil did they use in the study? Was it high polyphenol extra virgin olive oil?
I am lucky enough to be born, and have family in, a sunkissed island village in the med where my relatives grew their own olives and pressed their own olive oil themselves in small groups so I know what the real stuff actually tastes like despite what the price tag and the blurb on the labels would have you believe. In the UK where I live I only know of one product that looks/smells/tastes like the real thing and I only use it cold and never heat it up (as according to some people heating any oils to high temperatures can create nasty compounds that are really bad for you).
31:11 sunflower seeds, from what I know - has more vitamin e than almonds with less of the negatives for environmental impacts of them - like high water usage. I know there's not really cyanide in almonds on shelves, but I still worry about that. That's not in sunflowers. There's something else about sunflowers that make them nutritionally superior - and that's that you can use more of the sunflower than almonds. While you can eat the almond fruit, sunflowers have the leaves that're edible, as well as the head - which emmymade shows that is like eating an artichoke. So you're getting a lot of food with the sunflower that's low in fat too that makes up practically a complete meal! Sunflower petal tea sounds pretty nice, but I do eat the petals fresh preferably.

Here is the problem, when we all ate saturated fat daily, we were all thin and healthy. You can easily look at pictures from the past. Also, the higher you cholesterol the longer you live! So this means olive is super healthy.

Barnard mentions bologna sandwich versus peanut butter sandwich and fails to mention that sandwich is bread. Processed flour, and too many refined grains are thought to contribute to health problems and should be avoided by those with gluten intolerance. Gluten's peptides which are the amino acids that make up proteins are resistant to our stomach acid making them much harder for people to digest.
I once did taste a soft brownisch olive which did fall down from an olive tree ... it tasted great and I wondered why that is never sold in shops.

Olive oil is ultraprocessed junk food with no fiber or pulp. The fat has been concentrated to 100% and put in a bottle. A whole olive is the nutritious unrefined food that nature makes.
