Such a rich heritage of creativity, Czechoslovakia developing one of the most audacious and innovative film cultures in that daring decade of the Sixties. Though the country's animators aren't generally discussed in relation to their better known counterparts among live-action directors forging the Czech New Wave, they were no less instrumental in giving fresh and exciting new direction to the medium, both technically and thematically.
Baron Prášil my beloved. These are things my parents watched, since they were both born around the 1970s. Which means that I've also been sat in front of these to watch most of them. They're a treasure
All of these different countries and their varied animation styles make these videos extremely compelling. I always look forward to such videos on your channel, who portrays them best 👌 Horror and/or surrealism meeting animation is amazing to me!
Czechoslovakian 🇨🇿 animations are still amazing and inspiring 😺👍. Even some of the Stop Motion animated films inspired me to go to a Stop Motion animation class at Tikkurila, Vantaa (Finland 🇫🇮) in January 2020. It was short (2 days), but awesome 😺👍. And your video definitely deserves a big like 👍 from Vantaa, Finland 🇫🇮.
Thanks for another excellent video on European animation. I watched BARON PRASIL for the first time just a few days ago, here on YT - very striking, and you can clearly see its influence on Gilliam's work. Many many decades ago, one of our local Chicago tv stations ran Zeman's JOURNEY TO THE BEGINNING OF TIME as a serial on a children's afternoon program, so I have a long history of watching Czech animation!
If I am not wrong, JOURNEY TO THE BEGINNING OF TIME is slightly different for western market, they start in USA on some American river and most of things that refer to not existence of god were removed in US version of that movie.
@@kubricklynchmaybe with someone requesting about bulgarian and albanian animation, maybe you can include romanian and the other yugoslavian countries like serbia to be merged and known in the history of balkan animation?
your pronunciation of Czech and Slovak names is impeccable. They can be a mouthful for English speaking youtubers, it's refreshing to listen to someone who obviously practiced their pronunciation :) Being born in Czechoslovakia, when I was a kid, I didn't really like our domestic animated shows, they all seemed too gloomy. In the '90s when Cartoon Network became available, I stopped watching Czechoslovakian animations altogether. Only now when I'm in my late thirties can I appreciate not really the animation itself, but the message many of these pieces carry. Artists did NOT like the communist regime at all. These works of art should serve as a reminder to our people about how living under oppressive regime was not really that good.
Very nice video. The only thing I felt missing is the cartoon about a small mole. He's a well known character even to this day. Maybe that could be talked about in an upcoming video.
Thank you so much for sharing this very entertaining and informative film. I’m Czechoslovakian and a filmmaker so this was extremely interesting to watch. Well done!
I know it may be hard for foreigners to understand the true face of communism that these people were trying to escape or fight from with their work. The sadness, unabilitiy to express themselves while being suffocated by regime and their censorship. Another great (maybe greatest?) example is Miloš Forman, who based his work around the themes of oppresion of character's freedom and expression (One's flew over the cuckoo's nest is a great example of choking individual into submission by a higher power). Thank you mr. kubricklynch for recognizing these legends of our animation.
I found an interesting trends of either surreal, experimental, or unusual animations that you mentioned. This spirit kind of seemed gave new fresh perspectives than the mainstream or "supportive campaign" even when they may not necessarily to be enjoyed by general audiences (art for art sake).
Jan Švankmajer is the GOAT for stop motion with found objects. You simply won't find a director who does it better (the Quay Brothers wouldn't even have a career without him).

Hey there, you might be right the right person to ask, I've only ever met one other person that remembers this and wasn't smart enough to pick his mind for details. On swedish television in the 80s when I was a kid, much of the for children programs were either low budget hippie type adults playing games with children, or stop motion animation or claymation, for some reason unknown to me specifically czechoslovakian, often decades old films. One of these, featured a fantasy setting and these are the only details I remember: A king named Kormak and a wizard named Balor. Balor could fly and made like a whistling sound as he did and was possibly the antagonist. I wanna say puppets and stop motion but I'm not entirely sure. That's all I can recall. I know it's a longshot but does any of this ring a bell? The fact that they were translated and dubbed makes it near impossible to search for as the names might have been different in the original czech. Thanks in advance.
Once again, amazing video ! Thank you @kubricklynch ! Quick question : Will there be a video focusing on Albanian Animation (or Movies) during its Communist era [1945-1991]) ?
I know this may go beyond the scope of animation. But Czechs don’t forget. The instant the Czechs were attempting to instill some free market values (aka eeeevil Capitalism, where you could actually own things and make a tiny profit), our great loving brother overlords graciously came to save us from the great evil …. by rolling into Prague with tanks. The western world should also not forget, and not appease a war monger. As Budulinek famously learned, “if you just let them warm up their pinky fingers inside your doorway, they will inevitably forcefully wedge their whole witchy bodies inside your beautiful, safe, homes. And then, unless like in the story the great stag comes in last second and saves everyone, you’re absolutely effed. This is why the Czech initiative happened.
Just remember how old those are. Of course, they don’t appeal to all audiences. Especially Karel Zeman was an inspiration to Tim Burton and Terry Gilliam. What style tickles your fancy?

That Gene Deitch short in the thumbnail was released in the US with the animation made in Czechoslovakia.
Another great video.
THIS WAS MY CHILDHOOD THANK YOU SO MUCH
This is really beautifully done ❤ I am Czech living abroad. This just brings so much joy to see such an appreciation for Czech animation. Thank you!

Czechoslovakian animation is one if the best in the world
Now I'm waiting for Bulgarian's animation
I’m definitely doing Bulgaria eventually!

Great video.
Who agrees that cinema and animation are both considered art

I really like this series. It really is like no other
Amazing compilation of works! Can't wait for a video of argentinian animation.

Love your videos ❤
Actually, photographs / postcards that can be played on the record player really did exist!
Is there will be a sequel for the other czech animations that will come out later? I like to see amalka and mach and sebestova and etc?
Yup! I’m working on a video about the 70s right now.
I don't know what the Czechs put in their beer but there's definitely something!

Will you ever do episodes on Latin American animation?
Yup!

Yes I think so!
Cybernetic grandma giving me trauma as a kid
Great work
Great video! Can I recommend a intro into Brazilian cinema? I think it’s very fertile ground for analysis!
Can we see French animation? Also amazing work as always 🍿 🎞️
Yup, I'd love to do that eventually!
I would interpret the chess pieces not as fuel but as horsepower :)
