Hello I am Dujja from Pakistan. We used to have steam locomotive and sadly replaced by Diseal engines. Our rail way tracks laid by British engineers thanks to them. We are still using these tracks. I watched your program and like it very much. You both have delivered a great deal of information. I wish i could visit England and see these black steam engins. Thank you for sharing such nice videos. Regards
i am saying to my own mind how much you citizens up there in UK have respect, love & enthusiasm for your heritage- especially the steam locomotives is having an overwhelming welcome from the common citizens, i must deeply appreciate the promotors of this heritage railway to believe in their project that brings so much of cheer to specialised tourists that get so attracted to the steam like a living beast roaring & breathing with oneness & togetherness on a journey of nostalgia- some one said the the Sun never sets on the British Empire- its simply true because of this strong civic sense & appreciation of the people living in this great country- with warm regards Rahul
Thanks man - come and check out one of these places sometime, you'd be very welcome. There's 200 miles of railways like this so there's plenty to choose from! (May I suggest the Severn Valley Railway in Shropshire?)
Thank you for a superb set of four DVDs. Such a shame the series had to end prematurely. With all the cookery and antiques programme on UK television it is a pity that space couldn't be found for heritage lines. Well done for trying!
Awesome series of Video's pitty it didn't get the amount of subscribers needed to take off, however I think it would be different now with the advent of social media. The Internet is a lot different than it was in 2004!
I know you are referring to my mention of it but by implication you already think she is pretty yourself, and are attaching some importance to it. For example, if you did not think she was pretty, you would have no reason to be surprised that I left it out. But you were in fact surprised. Therefore you have shot yourself in the foot with your remark.
Hello there , I'm Daniel from Tasmania , and I'd love to come over for a visit , however time and cash I don't have much of , so I'm quite content content to sit and enjoy !
This is absolutely wonderful and it brings me great memories of steam locomotives. I have always wondered why and how the heavy puffs sound with lots of smoke coming out of the main chimney is made? Can anyone explain this to me? I would be grateful to know. Thank you so much.
What comes out of the chimney is a mixture of exhausted steam/water vapour from the cylinders (the puffs), and an amount of smoke/air from the fire in the firebox. The "puff" is caused by the exhaust valve in a cylinder releasing the steam at either end of its stroke, and the part you can see is water vapour, as steam is invisible. A steam locomotive will usually have two or three cylinders, and each will exhaust steam when it reaches either end of the stroke. The ferocity of the puff will vary based on how hard the locomotive is working, with the loudest being produced when the driver has the "reverser" fully forward/back (which means steam is allowed into each cylinder for a longer portion of its stroke, and hence is higher in pressure when it is released at the end of the stroke), and has the throttle (or "regulator") fully open. It is important for the exhaust steam to be piped into the smokebox (the black bit with the door at the front) and up the chimney (rather than just exhausting into the air from where the cylinders are) because this is one way in which the draught is pulled on the fire to make it hotter and to suck air through it; The other is a system of deliberate jets of steam (called the "blower"), which is used to induce a similar draught on the fire when the locomotive is not moving (or is not working hard enough for the exhaust beats to do this effectively). If there is no draught from either source, the fire will be starved of air, and if there is a lot of coal burning in the firebox, this will cause the smoke to turn sooty and black (indicating incomplete combustion of the coal). A good fire will produce a light grey smoke in between the puffs of water vapour.
Logjam5 - you did or you could not have left a message. It is IMPOSSIBLE to leave a message about something you do not care about. So we know you are not only a troll, but a stupid/ignorant troll, as well. Don't bother replying to this - I will not read it. Bu bye.
A lady who likes trains? And doesn't mind throwing wood? (That... was a brilliantly unexpected pun.) Son - you're married, get outta my way! (How goes the layout?)
Standard gauge is standard gauge - but you've definitely got more loading gauge than us! So, yes, probably, our trains are slimmer. I'm sure someone will put me right if I'm wrong.
That's correct. Here in New Zealand our track gauge is only 3'6" which is over 14 inches narrower than UK and USA track, but we run ex-British Rail rolling stock with narrow-gauge bogies without any clearance problems.
If train invention was ever reversed nobody would be extolling the virtues of, nor wishing they could drive, an EMU. Steam trains are objectively the best.
I wouldn't want a girlfriend like that. She'd be out doing stuff, and get no housework done. Who is going to make the sandwiches and clean the kitchen if she is doing other stuff women should not be doing.
@@michaeljane6141 No, the girlfriend is there primarily to do the housework and attend to all things in the kitchen eg Making sandwiches and serving cold beers.

How nice, this video shows just how equal women are. As with most labor the average woman does the work of 1/4 of a male, but they demand equal pay, 1/4 wages IS equal pay. Working on trains is a man's job, like all the other hard labor. If anyone thinks this is sexist, that means sexist is to tell the truth. Now this young lady would bring some beautiful babies into the world. I think if she really knew what a wife and mother is she would learn she has the highest respect and social status. How dare I try to advocate tradition something that has played a major role in the survival of our species for tens of thousands of years. Thomas

First class, brilliant and I have no idea how some would not like this---hearts of stone
This was a good video and she did a great job of learning to fire a steam locomotive, something I wish I had the oppurtunity to learn.
another well put together publication enjoyed every minute of it..
Great video, many interesting railways and subjects. Please do another!
I've been on this railway several times when on holiday!
Really enjoyed this as it showed sides to different types of railways
I will be looking for more
wonderful girl
Thank you for your efforts , particularly enjoyed the model garden railways. I need one, soon.
she made my day, :-)
My favourite bit is around 14:25 with the beat of the engine and the sound of the skylarks in an English rural setting. I grew up in such a world.
In Australia with New South Wales Railway both the driver and fireman cleaned the cab . I was at Enfield late 1960’s early 1970’s .
Thank you for posting. I enjoyed this very much.
Love this video of Jenny and George.

Love the video, enjoyed the ride, thank you. ......
Lovely view of the engine from the field,, birds tweeting
Enjoyed watching i'm now a subscriber .
Yes, it is a living beast; not only steel.
As a ex steam fireman/driver, never had a mate on the years spent on footplate like that young lady,Kind regards
Can we stop being politically correct and show all these pictures of women driving locomotives. They should not be doing this kind of work.
LocoScrapper I prefer political correctness to your sexism any day. I'm surprised that you left out how pretty she is.
jonka1 By making any mention of her looks, you are the one who is being sexist.
LocoScrapper You completely miss my point. It's your sexism I'm referring to. Seems like your hole is getting deeper.

Cool very cool !
As a foot plate from 1947 to 1993, never seen so much woods used to get a fire going in a loco.

There are not enough steam babes.
How would Jenny be classified on the UK rail system? Firebabe? She can light mine anytime!
The railway i volenteer on, we do the cleaning when the day ends
Good looking fireperson
Beautiful girl
Yes. Reminds me of Juliet Hammond Hill in the days of Secret Army (apart from the accent)
I'm kinda thick . I thought you meant the engine! She looks a lot like a buddy's wife here in Med Hat Alberta .
The woman . Not the engine . The engine looks like MY ex .
use soo nice boards for the fir??? i would make something with it.
Where are the piston rods and the valve gear?

22:50 :And thats just how I feel about steam engines!
in closing, be safe.
I thought that railway chaplains only existed on the GWR (God's Wonderful Railway)
Gloves would be good too.
Was that Jennifer Johnston acting as a "fireperson"?
we did not have all this palaver firing a locomotive Our shed had nice loco fire lighters not all this throwging lengths of wood all over fire box
😉😉😉👍👍👍😊
any fireman and his apprentice should have the proper protective equipment. gloves , safety glasses and ear protection !
so much to do
are the trains narrower in Britain then here is the US. I saw that it looked like the rail it self was smaller and not as wide as it is here.
Standard gauge is standard gauge - but you've definitely got more loading gauge than us! So, yes, probably, our trains are slimmer. I'm sure someone will put me right if I'm wrong.
Same track gauge (distance between the insides of the rails) but smaller loading gauge (the physical height, width and shape of the actual vehicles)
That's correct. Here in New Zealand our track gauge is only 3'6" which is over 14 inches narrower than UK and USA track, but we run ex-British Rail rolling stock with narrow-gauge bogies without any clearance problems.
