Yeah, I was like what sorcery is this? I played the original about 3 years ago and still have the graph paper in a neat little pile on the shelf. No, I did not finish the game. I enjoyed it, but oh boy was it difficult.
Very cool. Remember many nights at my friends taking turns playing Wizardry on his Apple II+. Where'd the years go :/ lol Great review. Definitely going to have to pick this up for that nostalgia road trip :)
I grew up playing Wizardry 6-8, and absolutely loved it! However, I’m 45 now and I don’t think I’m as “hardcore “ as I once was. LOL! That being said, I’d only consider playing this game if they updated it to include some QoL features regarding game saves.
You have 5 save slots. You can have duplicate saves. This is achieved by copying a save into another save alot. The game automatically saves after each input done in game.
That definitely makes things a lot better. Being able to back up your save will definitely take the sting off of a party wipe to be sure. Thanks for sharing!
Great game i picked it up on day one like a month ago many enemies down on lower floors can insta kill you and lvl drain you. But you can quit out before battle is over before it saves it. Then load game and you're right on spot of last fight.
That mapping function on the UI. Wow. I remember having to map out everything by hand on graph paper. This was like 1984.

if i remember, my best party consisted of bishops, samurai and a ninja, and a lot of tiltowaits.
BTW you can pre-order a physical edition of Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord on PS5 or Switch at Limited Run Games until 24th Nov 2024...

Thank you for your detailed review.
They should really wrap this one up and start to remake 6 and 7, those are the fun ones.

I remember when RPGamer used to be Mike's RPG Center.
I played this (and all the other Wizardry games) back in the 80s. I remember the maps were 16x16 and I used a lot of graph paper.

Not on the Nintendo Switch. You will load back into the room, but not in combat. However, all lost hit points, deaths, ect still apply.
