  • Rick and Morty live in a universe that expands infinitely until worlds where everything is on the cob becomes commonplace. when rick finds himself in nested universes is it unreasonable to assume that he's discovered a higher power that looks over the Rick and Morty universe?

    I think Rick's depressed because...
    -His wife is dead
    -He can't die
    -He's surrounded by idiots
    -Unity left him
    -And he can't find that Szechuan sauce
    *Edit in response to everyone saying "He can't die" I am aware that his own original body has been killed off several times and his own consciousness has been passed on to another body of Rick. By "He can't die" I meant that if what Space Penguin (the OP) is true, he can't die of his own volition. As in, he cannot end his own conscious existence.

    • @CannibalLecter
      @CannibalLecter 7 років тому +63

      Well he made that whole incident about his wife and child being murdered by a giant grenade thingy. She could've been murdered in an entirely different way or he may have accidentally killed her or something. Either way, I'm just thinking that she died in a horrible disaster because rick made a mistake, or someone who hates rick killed her for it.

    that would be an interesting fourth wall breaking alternative ending, like rick sadly says goodbye and i love you to his family and us and then everything goes black

    • @coueyprator3445
      @coueyprator3445 7 років тому +8

      it would be a sad ending for the show, but an awesome one at the same time.
      and instead of the theme song it would be just silence
      although i'd like the show to end with rick being content, and happy with what he has and what he knows is going to happen.

    • @nerd_world8919
      @nerd_world8919 7 років тому +1

      Couey Prator yep, what if rick were to die in season 3 or at the end of the series he dies somehow and his family is left to contemplate the deep stuff he has taught/showed them

    • @iSugarHeart
      @iSugarHeart 7 років тому

      I seriously doubt theyd contemplate. If this show is realistic depiction of todays world where everything is superficial they'd be sad and then move on with their lives. We also wish to see Rick with happy ending only because we relate to his cynism and depression and seeing him get happy ending would comfort us and possibly give hope (not that we would be conciously aware of).

    "*Perhaps* we evolved to fulfill some meaningless task"?!? We *absolutely, 100%, definitely* evolved to fulfill the same meaningless task as every other living thing; maximizing the long-term survival of a bunch of random-looking strings of C's, G's, A's and T's (or the molecules those letters represent), that have spent a billion+ years learning how to fold proteins (that'd be us) that recreate more random-looking strings of C's, G's, A's and T's. We're each a minor cog in branching, competing series of huge, millenia-spanning machines that self-replicates for the sake of self-replication. Also, most of those branches are dead-ends. On the one hand, it's kinda depressing, but it *does* take the pressure off, so...

    Honestly, I thought the show made it fairly clear he was like this since his wife died. I don't see why it needs some huge outside-the-box theory.
    I mean, I already deal with existential depression, it's a thing. I don't need to think I'm in a cartoon to be like that.

    That actually fits in perfectly with s03e04. Rick knew that the Vindicator episode would be a stereotypical superhero adventure that should only last two hours but would be dragged on because of drama; something much different than what the R&M audience enjoys, and which might drive them to boredom. Therefore, Druck Rick, fueled by alcohol and fear that this episode would endanger his life, decides, "Fuck this bullshit adventure. I'll gi*buuurp*ve them something to laugh at."

      Could be, but rick probably knows that it cannot be that way, as he and morty already are the main characters (rick being more relevant in a way than morty) but the way i see it is that rick actually does love morty and he keeps him alive because he believes that morty can be better and avoid the mistakes that he made, thus trying to make up through morty for leaving beth when she was young. This would fit with your theory, but since rick knows that he cannot be replaced i don´t believe that´s his motivation to keep morty alive

I was reminded of the scene ending season 1. "I have no idea what hes talking about." -Beth. That quote really hits it hard with the possibility that Rick knows that hes in a show, yet no one else around him does.

      Paul Grant Rick and Morty is the leading philosophical show. There's these cartoons that dominate in a specific field: Steven Universe tops the charts in character depth/music/artistic design, Gravity Falls leads in mystery and speculation, Rick and Morty is the new philosophical revelation show, and The Amazing World of Gumball just "is" for the sake of existing. I'm not saying it's bad (it's pretty good), but I mean that it doesn't need a meaning; Gumball just exists to exist

    you missed something that will prove your theory even more, in the episode where they watch multidimensional cable. rick knows when he is being watched and he knows he has to entertain. so he entertains the people by messing with the creator. he flips through the channels to force the creator to make up weird stuff on the fly. even making the remark that theres a improvisational feel about it. basically he didnt want to do anything so he opted out for sitting and making the creator work for it. when the creator finally created something he could get into he, he kept mentioning it out loud before he turn it on, im speaking of course about ball fondlers. when the creator threw jerry in there, he gave them the glasses so they could go make drama for us to watch away from him. its the same voice over on every channel, and the voice even admits they are just making stuff up.

      If this theory is right and that's how the creators of the show are rolling, then a likely final episode would be Rick finally being able to end his own life. The instant he succeeds the image goes black and that's it. No credits (they play through the start of the episode rather than the end, and Rick realizes this and intuitively knows that it's finally the end, so he goes on a quest to end it all...basically following the path of mounting Deja Vu to guide him to the right end).

    I'd have to find the source(s), but there are numerous studies correlating intelligence with depression, anxiety, and a whole other slew of mental issues, and I think therein lies the dichotomy of Rick and Jerry. When you're highly intelligent, you realize and understand things on a level that people of average intelligence can't and/or don't attempt to. You also either figure out or agree with ways the world could be made better, but you are quickly disillusioned to any ideas it could be due to the people in power being of either average or lower intelligence, mired in ignorance and/or cognitive dissonance, greed, etc., and/or being wholly unwilling or unable to change (I don't want to suggest that all people of average or lower intelligence are unable to grasp what someone of a higher intellect suggests; I'm just speaking in general terms). Often this rift is resolved by becoming cynical, because even though you might have been an idealist once, you realize it doesn't matter what makes sense or what will make things better so long as there is no concerted effort to do so. There's also a loneliness inherent in high intellect as it's hard to find someone who can understand and relate to you.
    I love the multiverse and nested universe ideas you brought up, since I've been seeing articles about such lately. Tying that together with Rick's Genre Savvy/awareness and fourth wall breaking is absolutely brilliant.

      I must say, as a person with 150 IQ (which you may not believe), I feel this emptiness too. I have 2 people that I sympathise with, but the rest of my friends are not as intelligent. I barely have someone that I could talk to about science or just math and feel good. Because other people are like 'Bro, you lost me. Can you repeat?'. It's just sad. I feel depressed almost everyday. Sure, I feel generally happy about my life, but I have no goal. So I try to fill the void with knowledge. And yes, higher intelligence may come with anxiety. I act differently with each person I talk to. I don't know if it's a multipersonality mental disease, but if I talk to 2 or more different people, I don't know how to react to each one and I panic. Then I get confused so I start swearing to feel some relief. In the end, I get to be a salty person (even arrogant to others) who doesn't know how to do basic things like communication. I am sorry for this long comment or if there are some grammatical mistakes - it's 1 a.m. when I'm writing this and I'm just 13 :|

    I don't think this is the reason why he's so depressed. You said it yourself, he knows he's just for show. Which means he knows he's in a script, he knows he's not pulling his own strings. Even when he improvises, tries to make his own choices, or do actions without the thought of consequences, he knows that this is just.....the script. Hell, he might even know that the creators know that he knows this. I think what saddens him the most, is that he knows his "free" will, his thoughts, his life, his family, his adventures, his WORLD.......is nothing more than written paper.

That shortly after the show aired people on reddit were throwing out theories on Rick's back story and someone hit the nail on the head. if I recall correctly one of them said "I'm glad we didn't stick to that idea" or something along those lines. So I wouldn't be surprised if some theories do actually change some of the writing for Rick and Morty, which I agree would kind of suck. But then again it could also push them to come up with better ideas!

  • @austinupnext314
    @austinupnext314 7 років тому +271

    I think everyone already knows about this but just to sum the theory up: Rick is from a different universe than C-137 and his Morty is the one with the eyepatch in season 1. Rick and eyepatch Morty may have messed up their universe in which something similar to the Croninberg incident had happened. Instead of escaping with Morty, Rick portals alone to C-137 where there is no C-137 Rick, possibly because he disappeared or died. The original Rick then shows up at the Smith's house where Morty is already 14 years old, and Rick becomes part of C-137. Back to original Morty: after being left behind in a universe similar to that of the Croninbergs, Morty develops a hatred towards his Rick. Morty then somehow escapes from the original universe and sets out to find his Rick and eventually kill him. This is why we see pictures of Rick with baby Morty, even though he met C-137 Morty at age 14; because the baby is eyepatch Morty. Rick also explains that he has abandoned the Smith's previously and we see that this is probably true when Rick and C-137 Morty escape from the Croninberg universe and Rick acts like replacing himself in yet another universe is no big deal, while C-137 Morty is in shock.

    I have a theory myself. As we see in numerous episodes, we notice Rick gets "riggity riggity wrecked", ALOT. He's never afraid to try new drugs or drink extremely irresponsibly. Because Rick is human, doing all these drugs and drinking all this alcohol could have possibly permanently crippled his dopamine system. Therefore he never enjoys anything and feels depressed when not getting wasted. :)

    • @jeremydenton4192
      @jeremydenton4192 7 років тому +22

      Nah, Rick is to smart to not know that doing space meth and constant drinking ARENT bad for him, he knows better and CHOOSES to numb his emotions, and when something breaks through his paper thin mental wall (that he's constructed to keep everyone he loves in c-137 thinking he doesn't give any fucks about anything), he suddenly gets a massive dose of all the emotions at once, hence the suicide attempts and drug abuse.

      Rick isn't always in a state of depression. Depression is characterised by pervasive anhedonia. Rick always has the time of his life by letting go and cranking his pleasure systems into overdrive with exciting adventures and genuine thoughts of fun--impossible for a clinically depressed person. The fact that we see him emotionally numb at times is due more to experience than a mental affliction.

    Rick isn't depressed because of this. He is depressed because he is aware that the universe has no meaning and he can do anything he wants.
    -You see this because all of his actions try to distract himself from reality. Him trying to find love in Unity, adventures with Morty, ect.
    -Also, you see that his hatred and rebellion against government stems from his ideology of not wanting to serve anyone. So he wouldn't want to serve this "god" to keep his universe alive.
    I don't like this theory. Although it makes sense, I think it should stay a theory and I hope it's not really what the show is. I don't want this to be real because it kind of defeats Rick's character. If he knew there was a "god" then he would stay ok fuck it destroy my universe. Rick doesn't serve anyone and he knows everything about the Universe and that there isn't any meaning. That's why he's depressed.

    If there is a sentience that is Rick Sanchez, then it exists as a facet of his voice actor. So if we have a Higher reality above us, then we too have a type of oversoul that knows it's participating in fractalizing itself to portray separate individualities. Like playing the video game Roy more than once. Through a veil of consciousness.

    no one notices rick's depression and suicide attempt which is the saddest part

    I have to say....you're very does blow my mind....... I mean it makes so much sense. But I always had a theory that he was cynical and depressed was because he suffered from the same problem most scientists do when they finally solve all of the mysteries. Like you said he is a scientist and he wants to know how the universe works.... But what happens when you finally learn everything there is no more challenges there's no more mysteries..... even worse you discover that maybe everything to the universe is just useless..... Love.... Family....friendship..... There's just no point to exist. I wouldn't be surprised if he somehow has absolute evidence that there is no God since he talks like a atheist.... I guess the lesson he teaches us is sometimes knowing all the answers doesn't make you happy....

      I'm not really impressed by the theory. Daydreaming about the writers incorporating it makes the experience less enjoyable for me. I think Space Penguins video execution and technique are spectacular but the theory itself: "what if it's all a dream"... ..."and what if he knows it's a dream" does not blow my mind. It's just not a Rick and Morty caliber idea.
      As for knowing all the answers: Keep pushing that rock up that hill and when it rolls down take a quantum of solace in knowing it was going to do that as you push it up again.

      The theory isn't that its a dream. It is that Rick is aware he is a character in a TV show. In family guy, south park, american dad etc you are watching a show where people "live" like we do. In Rick and Morty you are watching a show where one of the characters is aware that they are in a show and have to entertain us otherwise their show, and by extension their existence, will be cancelled if they don't.

So you're saying that we all start off as a Jerry, Rick and Jerry aren't related so how is this possible? If they shared the same blood and a closer DNA then it would make more sense, but now you're talking about the little choice of us becoming Ricks?
