- The initial stage of train movement mechanically starts from the traction motors pinion, The pinion is engaged with
the bull gear of wheel assembly .
hence the pinion inserting plays a major role in traction system.
This video shows how the pinion is fixed with the armature shaft of traction motor.
The pinion that has to be inserted with armature shaft is first given to lab test . after the lab test result success.
The pinion and traction motor armature shaft are cleaned with the orion 77 . clean dry cloth is used to finally
clean .
smooth silicon paper and smooth presition file are used to level the surface in the pinion extraction hole.
Student dark blue oil colour is used to check the surface matching between pinion
and traction motor armature shaft.
the blue colour is applied evenly to the inner surface of pinion.
the blue colour matching between the armature shaft and pinion has to be above 90 %,
first a marking is made in the pinion with refering the shaft extracting hole as another mark.
if the matching is not enough . another mark is made in pinion.
if the matching is below 85% either traction motor armature or the pinion will be replaced with other.
after the blue matching . the surface of armature shaft with blue is taken with transparent tape for further records.
K value is taken in 8 different areas of pinion to ensure its perfect structure. the sum of 8 different vale
is divided by 8 to get the unique value.
pinion advance is measured in cold condition and hot condition of pinion. the difference from hot to cold gives
the pinion advance value.
The pinion is kept in a oven or induction heater with 170 degree to 190 degree with the sum of atmospheric temperature.
The registered values after the pinion fitment are. traction motor number. armature number. class of locomotive.
pinion make. bull gear ratio.
pinion advance in cold condition of pinion.
pinion advance in hot condition of pinion.
the difference from hot to cold is pinion advance value.
the K value of pinion.

The installation process is ridiculous but I appreciate the skill of these workers ! ! !they perform their best without any sophisticated equipments and tools.with the help and blessing of God Rama ! ! ! 😬
This is a process of blue matching the pinion bore to the shaft. The shaft and the bore are tapered by a certain angle.
The idea is to ensure full contact between bore and shaft. After each check the bore is hand scraped to achieve full contact
But he was applying too much blue, which will definitely show full contact. A very thin coating should be applied and checked for contact.
This seems to be a quick solution, to avoid dismantling the motor completely.
However it is better to have perfect matching by grinding both shaft and bore and suiting them to standard guages.
It's high time our railways are modernized.
Omg i think this is the best thing ever.....I can't believe theres so many video on traction motor, unlike 7 years ago there was barely anything on them only the diesel engine(which to me was boring) Traction motor are so awesome and all that power
This is something I never imagined…thank You for uploading !
this procedure is rediculus, on d87 traction motors we cleaned shaft and gear, heated gear on magnet heater and slid onto shaft, never had one come loose, we had machinests good enought with a torch they could cut the old gear off and not damage the shaft, I was an electrician changing brush holders and new brushes
That is amazingly complex! I had no idea about how this was done. Thank you very much!
You STILL have no idea how it's done.
I used to make those shafts for emd
Good information of this measurment system.. Thankyou 👍
The video is very nice besides the boring music
Dear friend, video is good, but one thing, while heating the pinion the temperature should be 150°c to 175°c, if more then the colour of the pinion will chang and it effects badly on the metal of the pinion moreover a gauge should be used that to measure how advance the pinion penetrated, if the pinion advancement exceeds it may cracked or there may be chance for shaft sharing, one more applying Blue coat fot surface checking is not efficient, but Film taking by tape is good, where the filing is carried out there you can notice a deep mark, pinion bedding is most important, proper bedding gives assured fitting, snap taking proves that 90%of bedding should be accurate, main thing always maintain the colour of the pinion should not be changed by over heating as they're made up off High Speed steel, according to BHEL somewhere oil bath is being used for pinion heating, ok friend thank you
superb Sakthi ji..its very informative..please keep it on.
@4:01 that is way too much blue paint.. you have several mils of paint in there.. that will show a much better contact surface than you should be getting.. you need to use one dab and spread it almost transparent thin in the gear bore..
There is no key way in both pinion and motor shaft, how fitment is possible, ,???🌻🇮🇳🌻🙏🙏🙏
Interesting video! Thank you! Subscribed!
I'm very curious about the bearings and the sealing and lubrication solutions. If I'm right there is a cylindrical roller bearing at the drive end (floating) and a deep groove ball bearing at the ventillation end, right?
Are they current-insulated bearings?
Is there any video about how they do the disassembly and assembly of the traction motor?
Nice video.
Looks like GoldenRock or Erode loco shed.
As an engineer, I'm totally confused.. Fitted loads of shrink fit gears/ couplers to shafts in my time but never seen such a mess as this. Bad editing / unclear processes / poor safety - operative in sandals and the music is as rubbish as the work....
and the orange nails...
My exact job. I primarily work on A3432 AC motors and D90 DC motors
This is same my job...
Thank you brother..
Pretty close to the 80 percent minimum
This a shrink fit method. We are using small oil bath to heat up the penion. I could not observed that shaft was taper or straight. Cup and cone method is also reliable. No heating required. Even grooved ring is also suitable between shaft and gear. Offcource it need external washer with fastner to expand on between. We used in sulzer twin lobe blowers.
Sir for high torque interfaces is oil bath heating recommended?
@@nishakurian7762 yes ring span can be used. Pl. refer the catalogue. For shrink fit you have to maintain the tolerences.
Cool video
Wow no key or bolts but it still holds onto the shaft
Am I missing something ?
The pinion is on and off easy while using the marking blue.
Then all of a sudden it's heated up to get it on. ?????????
Paul Bassindale the parts are tapered.
Heating it allows it to expand and advance onto the shaft more, as it cools the tighter it is on the shaft.
Is there no friction enhancer applied on the interface?
Dudes in sandals. Imagine if he dropped that pinion on his foot.

@@izalman Idk, Sanjeev?
can u tell me how pinion is jammed with the shaft here . i cant see any holes in pinion to jam with shaft.
Protection gloves?
a ring or disk is screwed on to prevent the gear from loosening during operation?
Is it ok to have traction motor in wdg3a with flushed pinion , will it suffer a slip
Shouldn't a tooth span micrometer be used for precision measurment of k value .
I'm not aware of permissible backlash for this application.
Very good
As Sakthi, I'd really like to know how large the taper is? What's the difference of the start and the end radius?
music is annoying
Please upload blue matching of 6fra 6068..Dummy pinion n shaft ..
please how fixing the finale fit keyless pinion in shaft. by heating the pinion or how ?
Would anyone know if there's a video showing how to remove the pinions if it has the the float off system where it has the groove cut in the shaft for hydraulic fluid and porta power removal?
The pinion is destroyed during removal. A new pinion is always used during overhaul
Bro use PPE.and work safely.
U mad?? This video 2 yrs old
Indian railway is still in 1947 era perhaps, no modernisation in workshops
Very irritating music
This motor is a 3-phase induction motor.
No it is dc motor ...hence single phase
@@SurajKumar-vb1yu There is no phase on DC... it's just DC.

The music is very much frustrating,,,,it spoiled the whole video
I think u'r work in GOC
Please Growup.... Use Proper PPE like Hand Gloves...
Bah,such a horibly bombastic procedures.Even rocketery may not use these sort of complicated procedure for pinion insertion. Why there is no keyway on motor shaft & pinion.?
This has been the traditional method for ever on all loco built in USA. Keyways introduce a stress path for motor shaft failure. With proper interference fit, it is the most reliable method
Why do you need key when there is not timing requirement? The key is usually not intended for taking torque....it just aligns the gear to some set angle.
Also the stresses on these gears are obviously humongous.....do you want to machine sharp cornered keyways in high stress shafts?
Enough with the stupid soundtrack. Very distracting
I liked the open toed sandals... Where was OSHA? Is this even in the US?
This is India, where so many people live that a shoe is more expensive than a pair of legs.

Improve the audio quality as that of music.

ANSI / AGMA
What is the purpose of putting scotch tape on that motor shaft and then sticking it in a notebook?? And using a vernier for gear measurement...is that OK?? Never seen that being done in practice
Enigmatic...😕🤷
What is horsepower wdg3a traction motar
Simple to know. Look at maximum HP of the engine and divide the HP into the amount of axles. If a 3500hp engine has 6 axles, then the motors have at least 583hp, then multiply a safety factor of 1.2 so then you would be safe to say one would have maximum 700hp for a certain amount of time at full load.
10:00 what the hell does that prove? He smeared the oil all around the surface anyway...so the "record" doesn't reflect what actually happened.
Sorry ,that was not shown, the first layer of oil color is to verify the matching ,for record a lite colour is used.
@@Assakthi Thank you for explanation.....I am trying to make a complete understanding of your process and as a master mechanic tech I have to assume that some of your techniques were not recorded on the video....the shaft has a taper machined on it?
❤️🇩🇰😷
Who needs an ultrasonic cleaner when there are plenty of disposable human hands available?? I'm sure that Orion 77 is harmless! Wait.....you're mounting that pinion with adhesive tape?? And I've never seen Prussian blue smeared on like a coat of grease.....that will pass every time!
Why using a induction heater ? The pinion insertion is easy with hand
Induction heater or a oven used to expand the pinion inner dia,to insert further inside the armature as this shaft has increased inner dia,tq
Is there a retention plate bolted to the end of the armature, to keep the gear snug in its position?
No sir,
@@Assakthi That's interesting to see no retainer plate. I've installed pinions on D79CFA motors where a nut is used, obviously the armature shaft is longer and threaded to accommodate it. I liked the thorough preparation procedures.

Shame he's using a brake block securing pin to turn the shaft.
चैनल का नाम हिंदी में हैं तो आप जानकारी भी हिंदी में दो ना
What the hell is he doing and why? Why doesn't the shaft spin inside the pinion gear and why don't they have a key lock?
Exactly ...The armature can be keyed or splined to avoid slipping...
It's a tapered interference fit, that's why he heated the bull gear for final assembly. Once it cools down it shrinks and holds tight to the armature. That's also why he was checking the contact pattern, to make sure over 85% of the two surfaces would be in contact after the final fit.
An interference fit has no backlash, is easier to machine and can handle more torque. A keyed connection wouldn't handle the torque in this application and if it did, it would eventually have to much backlash and either ruin the armature or the gear. Shaft balancing may play a part as well with a keyway.
With the splined connection there is more machining involved, always has some backlash from the start and, like the keyed connection, would eventually wear out from the constant power on and power off and reversal of rotation a locomotive experiences. Not to mention, railroads have been using interference fits since the steam engines. It's easy to machine and it's been proven over the years to work.
@@inothome Better explanation than this video had. Odd method of attachment though, versus a regular shrink fit. I guess it works though.
@koti Kaatan Press tapered fit works, been using it for over 100 years, much less machining needed. Sure there are other ways, but this is simple and it works. As evident that it's still being used for years and years. Also, not sure what type of torque each style is rated too, but I don't think there are many machines that will generate much more torque than a traction motor or the same fit in old steam engines. Anytime you have splines there is room for backlash and subsequent wear from it. This has absolutely zero backlash or splines to wear.
@koti Kaatan They use hydraulic pressure on a journal inside the pinion. It pops it off with no damage at all. No pressing, no heat, no hammering, no cutting. Pretty cool system, but it uses up to 60,000 PSI of pressure to pop it. There are videos on UA-cam of it.
Warning: an awful lot of nothing is happening in this video
Flip Flops and he is holding the pinion? Nothing bad can come of that. The whole video is not credible.
Looks extremely low-tech manufacturing, with huge chance for errors, out-of-spec parts, and accidents to worker.
That's not manufacturing that's overhauling
@@guruprasadgawali Same difference...
Primitive !!
none of this makes the least bit of sense....
nonsense
Music and computer voice suck!!!!!
no high tech here, move on. i am surprised that plain old spur gears are used.
For such high operating torques....yes.
Spur gears are economical and fitting from an engineering stand point. There is little to no shock loads on a traction motor. The load is spread out over 4 or 6 bull gears. Those gears are hardened and wont shear. They only wear out from long life and good lubrication or short life from poor lubrication - and proper or improper installation(alignment).
Boring same thing repeatef
