Great Interview. Lucky enough to have some time to watch it all. I especially liked your comments on what your father said about if you cant have 20 hives run properly, you dont deserve to have 200 hives. Ian as usual, has some great advice too. you both gave a great interview. It flowed really well despite the internet problems. Lots of really interesting issues.

The work Steppler is doing in AG in his province is interesting to hear about on that large scale. The prospective of how scientists and industry relate to technology being sold to the farmer is eye opening.
I started with a swarm and have just over 10 production colonies. I am an engineer in production so am falling straight into designing a bee operating business.

I have been watching both of you guys for a year now. I have learned so much and have had success with going to single brood boxes.
I totally agree with the comments about how the consumers have to "vote" with where they spend their money. I always try to buy organic and/or local, even for the oils I use for my soapmaking. Lots of people (especially in the US soapmaking groups) say "What's the point, I'm just one person, I can't make any difference." But for example, almost all Swedish producers of cookies and potato chips have totally quit using palm oil, because the consumers here didn't want to buy stuff with palm oil. It took the good part of a decade to get there, but these issues really don't have any fast solutions.
:-) every little bit matters! I know things can't always start off ideal but that doesn't mean we have to stay there forever. I hope to be more of a natural beekeeper in the future (no apivar) Before I can do that I am going to have to figure out a surefire way that will work and will protect my bees and my business. If we can nail that down soon perhaps we can help others do the same. You all watching our videos and your comments makes a difference as well and we are very thankful for you all and hope we can return the favor with some beekeeping tips

Oh, you've already given (me at least) sooo many tips and awesome information about beekeeping! 😀👍 I've been doing this for five years, but I really haven't felt like I know what I'm doing until this year, and your channel has helped to push me forward in a great way! 😍 I try to get other Swedish beekeepers to watch your videos too, just because I think it's sooo interesting to get a different perspective from what we "know" here in Sweden. 👍

Great back and forth guys!!!! Thanks so much, you fill in so many gaps of information for me, it's amazing. A thing to try for the open feeder; I tried the blue, green fiber mesh that are used for furnace filters that are washable. The mesh gives a ton of surface area, and the bees can climb all over it and work, they don't get stuck, and the mesh can be cleaned easily and reused. Most hardware stores, Home Depot, Lowes, etc have them. Thanks again, Paul.
Subscriber to both. Ian’s best series was the nail biter last year before his bees went into winter storage. Kamon’s best series was the high mite load colony that he saved. Enjoyed seeing you have a conversation.

Greetings from Ireland…as a new beekeeper in my 60’s I am really enjoying your videos…just started 2 months ago and had a swarm after 4days!! Learning lots from you …weather here is not great at the moment for the bees…just caught a swarm of Irish melafera black bees in a nuc so hopefully I’ll have some good bees for next year.Slan leat..good bye in Irish..cheers

Without all you professional beekeepers, I wouldn’t be into them without a mentor. I’m in my second year of bee’s after losing 18 hives to bears. I started with 7 in April of 2020.This year 2021 I started with 1 package and one nuc in April also. I now have 5 hives In July. My hopes is 10 hives at the end of September. 2 frame nuc’s for the split win. Barnyardbees way.

Any problem with mites falling in the pollen trap and “contaminating” the pollen? Haven’t started collecting pollen yet but started thinking about this issue because it seems very probable that the mites would fall into the pollen traps just like the fall onto the bottom board tray through the screen. How do you handle this when you collect your pollen in your Apimaye hives?
Kamon, do you have a video where you in depth about your treatment-free experiences? I asked Bob Bonnie the other day in a UA-cam comment, and he said he tried the Bond method in three of his yards for 7 years. He said there were really high losses for the first two years, but things slowly improved and they were doing well by the end. In fact, some breeders even came and bought stock from him. He only stopped because someone else set up a big yard near his yards and they started going backwards again.
When i open feed i float a queen excluder ontop of the syrup some plastic excluders will float on heavy syrup onits own on light syrup they will need wood attached to them. Just getting cold in england. Matt
i have found using double deeps allows for quick splits. It keeps 90% of the brood out of my honey supers without an excluder.
fun, love it. The eazy loader-is there any similar constructions for half sized trucks, smaller ones? Kamon you need something to help you lifting your hives dont you? Drawning bees, I use light expanded clay none bees dies.
Enjoyed watching your interview. I have bees in Scotland (UK). I treat for varroa but watched a talk done by Ralph Buchler on Sustainable Varroa Management he presented at the National honey show in 2019 which supports the reduction in Reliance on chemical treatments for Varroa but not no treatment and I am thinking about adopting this in one of my apairie s to see if this is a way forward.
Thanks for the video. I've tried HiveAlive in my syrup. I don't recommend it. Just use straight up sugar syrup for feed.

Ordered a couple more hive tools through your amazon link, they seem to disappear way to easily. hope that helps and enjoy your videos. You use only/mainly deep boxes for honey? Makes sense to condense all equipment to the same size.
I am using mostly deeps but am starting to transition to mediums for honey. My back is hating lifting hundreds of deep supers and I am too young to be blowing out my back (like I did earlier this season) :-). Laurel said we need to do mediums for honey and like a smart husband I said yes ma'am!
So my question is this if you have doubles can’t one take off the one box treat with acid and set second box on bottom with top treat and buy them back together

Kamon - you'd mentioned queen breeders you purchase from... can you share some of the sellers? I try and raise local queens and bees but am always looking for adding new queens to the genetics (not that the gene pool is really huge anyway) but I'd be interested in several queens a year but finding folks isn't that easy.

Hey Kamon, quick question: if you’re raising queens, can you take the royal jelly from other queen cells and add it into one? Or is there a point where adding royal jelly doesn’t actually do anything
Yes Kamden you totally can take royal jelly from a queen cell and use it to do what is called priming the queen cups. You can graft without it but many feel the larvae do better with the extra jelly
@@kamonreynolds when you do that, is it a “more the merrier” thing, or can too much be bad. I was thinking next year trying that and really loading the larvae up with royal jelly to make a really well fed queen
@@kamdenmcleanmusic it is best to just put a little dab down there. The bees will eat the excess. Just keep plenty of nurse bees with plenty of pollen, beebread, and pollen sub and they will give you plenty of jelly

Hi, I am in the uk, You mention using Honey bee healthy to keep the mould of the Syrup, Can you not use Thymol Crystals as when using this you not only stopping the mould but also helps with the fight with the mites, Also a natural product, I do not have your qty of hives, but this have had to add a lot of syrup to my colonies, just under 100 in total, We had a bad dearth this year south UK kent, No rain through the Summer,this year. With some Higher temperature,than normal. no Nectar for my bees, ? Kaimon, your area from what I understand is mostly forest, Large river, Where about's are you, Same question Ina I am aware Canada, Manitoba, Near Ontario, are you near the lake or on the Prairies,? I have watched both of your You tube channels, fascinated by your bee keeping, indoors over winter weather reasoning, feeding mite control, Against what I do here in the UK. Hi , great respect for the 2 of you and wat you are doing with your bees, i don't know if you have seen the Apimondia , the was a dr Tom seeley , i think he is American , that he's promoting to get ride off treatment against varroa mites, saying that the bees are changing their genetic to fight this acarien .
I just would like to know what you think about this, personally i have watched a lot of videos of Ian and i know that he's against people who do not look properly after their hives , specially varroa .
He was talking also at a meeting in England of the association of beekeeper.

Thanks for thé vidéo of your lève stream video of which I had missed the first part. I would like to make two comments. First it strikes me that the dealing with varroa seems to be a case of the « blind leading the blind ». I am not saying that to be offensive. But it all seems like the « I did this and it created this other problem and then in solving the latter, we created another problem ect.., etc, etc...As a result we are very far from the original bees and we are before something else...and what? I think that what is missing is an example of someone who has really solved the verra mite problem. Is there no one on the American continent that has succeeded in doing so?
In France, in the Aveyron region in the mid southern région, there is a bee keeper who is mite free. One thing that was never given while that was mentioned was that which he did to get there. This was mentioned during a European Conference on bee keeping. Oh! They mentioned it in passing, but never gave any details on what was done. Big silence! I am sure there are more out there, but they never come to the surface. Beekeepers say that when you find one mite that means that there are one hundred that you don’t see. I say if one finds one beekeeper who is mite free, there are hundred out there that are mite free. May I suggest a call out for anyone in beekeeping that is mite free. Naive on my part to suggest this one may say. Perhaps. But if it can be done somewhere, it can be done else where. Secondly this has not yet been done and I find it is missing. Just a thought.
My personal direction isn't to control the # of mites but to breed for bees that can take care of themselves in spite of mites.

If your implying that we don't answer questions you couldn't be more wrong. I have a life. According to youtube I responded back to over 2500 questions in 2020. Also how do expect us to keep track of them all? I am putting on a conference this weekend I have a ton of stuff going on. Not to mention the holidays. Oh and then there is the actual beekeeping too.... geez
I think Ian you are touching the problem...the main one.....? We are producing more food...true. But what about the quality of the food. Is this vast quantity of food of the same quality as say 100 years ago? You talk about the quality of the food for bees...the need for the content of the natural pollen. Kamon, on you say the same. Is that the case for the food produced today? What are the scientific analysis of the food produced today for humans?
Suzanne, I agree that the foods we have available to us are often poor quality. Mineral density in our foods is a huge issue. A lot of our foods are just empty carbs and fillers. However, the only way I know how we can get back is buying from local farmer CSA's, local cow and chicken producers, etc. Putting our dollars in the pockets of folks who are producing what we want is the only way back other than producing it ourselves. Too many folks don't even know what a farm is! Education on the natural order of things is a colossal factor in why people are ok with our food system as it is and why there is so much unrest. Beekeeping, farming, outdoor life, is vital to human health
Kamon Reynolds - Tennessee's Bees I agree. I remember a friend of mine 8n the city, used half his back yard to garden some of his vegetable and he was criticized by his neighbors because he did not have a prestige lawn on which he refused to put pesticides ect. Some of my friends who have farms do not have a vegetable patch and don’t want to spend the time gardening, vegetables being cheaper at the grocery stores. I think it is true that local growers should be encouraged. But I also think that every one should go back to the time when all household had their vegetable patch, whether they lived in the city or not. Another point I would like to make is the promotion of backyard beekeeping and keeping a few chickens and/or rabbits. In times of war and/or depression these people had a better chance of surviving, in the first place and they ate better than those who didn’t. What I find so sad today is the lost of those basic skills for so many. If a famine comes and I think we are not immuned to it happening, most people will lack the basic skills of their own survival. It was not in the American culture to keep bees and it was left to a few individuals. In Europe it was wide spread. In the difficult times, the hardest thing to come by was sugar. In my region we can always go out and tap a few maple trees...but that is not the case for everyone. I so hope that people would think of beekeeping if only just for their own needs.
On a side note and your talk the usefulness of the internet. For me if it hadn’t been for the Internet I would never had discovered beekeeping. So keep up the good work.
