Didn't Christian say in an interview that he's a power metal guy at heart despite being associated with death metal? I think he's having a blast with this track here.
@@ha-tsuneko yup, but he is undoubtely one of the BEST death metal guitarist. He has been in necrophagist and spawn of possesion, and doing guest solos in fallujah, gorod and a lot more. So yes, he is a power metal guitarist but he is versatile as fuck
@@ha-tsuneko Yeah, Christian loves power metal. You can hear his power metal neoclassical influence from his first solo album, Timewarp. I couldn't get enough of that album.
This album is really showing the versatility of Obscura: Solaris is a tech death song with 1000 notes per minute, A Valediction is a melodeath catchy song, Devoured Usurper is a Morbid Angel type of song, heavy as hell, and this song is very energetic, fast and even happy sounding, with a power metal influence. I'm hyped to hear the full album, and I hope they don't release any more songs until then so the hype won't fade away.
Man this is fun it’s the most melodic they’ve been since Cosmogenesis. This gives me Incarnated vibes. Love how they continue to experiment with each album.
This song makes me so happy for two reasons 1. I recall Christian mentioning that he really loves power metal despite being mostly known for death metal. It feels good to see him playing the style he loves in one of his most iconic band. 2. Obscura writes a song quite distinct from their usual sound (an awesome one at that) so what makes Obscura Obscura? Idk about others but for me the answer is Jeroen's double stop fretless bass lines.
Yes. He said that in a Thomann video. He said he is actually more of a power metal/80s shred guy. He was sort of "pulled" into Necrophagist, which he did love though. He mentioned that he doesnt really like the generic tech death stuff being put out all the time... Thats why i think he is back in Obscura, making prog/tech death...
I never thought I'd get Dragonforce vibes from Obscura, but when that harmonies hit at 4:12 I had to find a lighter just to hold it up while I headbanged
@@Skepsis710 if you're missing Sebastian, Trujillo, and Linus, they have a new band together called Obsidious. Their album hasn't come out yet, but the singles sound fantastic. Check them out.

I have to comment again... 4:12 is one of the most beautiful licks I have listened in a lot of time. Some people will say that shredders doesn't have any feel to play... How wrong they are 🤣, this solo has feeling, technique... All of the members of the band are awesome, but Chris is a "virtuoso". Thanks again for such an amazing song 🤘🤘🤘
I don't normally care for clean singing in death metal, but it works really well here. This song is absolutely amazing, as is the rest of the album. It's some of their most diverse material and probably their best since Cosmogenesis. Christian returning to this band is one of the best things to happen in tech death in a long time.
Usually I am not to comment but the work on this album deserves all the possible recognition, personally it gives me the impression that it is, to this day, one of their most versatile plates in which the different influences are felt and converge. You can see the work and attention to detail in many songs and each one has a very strong identity. Although Death's philosophy is evident when experimenting in each new work, Oscura this time has expanded beyond its own mold, I like the direction they are taking. One of the most beautifully unexpected releases that has become one of my favorites of 2021. I will see them if they come to my country for this album, they deserve it.
Bjørn from Soilwork kind of brings this into Scar Symmetry territory. Digging how every song has a very unique character on this album so far, and I'm really liking the genuine surprises I'm finding. All the tracks fit together coherently, but nothing ever really fulfills the same purpose as what came before it. Admittedly, I hope we get to hear a bit more of Steffen's lower vocal range before the album's over, but I suspect I won't be disappointed here. Good stuff.
