We are into Bengal royalty now. So many fantastic memories with these guys.
One of my favorite banners ever hung in Riverfront Stadium: "MONTOYA WILL DESTROY YA!!!" Bengals fans do love their offensive linemen!

You asked for it Joe, and I’m happy to deliver. I’ve been a Bengals fan since the 1981 Super Bowl year. I was only ten but I remember the excitement in my family, in the city, and I remember watching that team with my Dad every week. As I grew up I got to go to games down at Cinergy Field and I met players like Ken Anderson, Anthony Munoz, Max Montoya, and Boomer Esiason. Yes I’m over 40 and I remember the Weapon that was James Brooks very well.
The Bengals traded for James Brooks in 1984, a few years after Pete Johnson (20/81/1 TD) eclipsed rookie James Brooks (6/23/0 TD) in the Freezer Bowl for the 1981 AFC Championship. Pete Johnson played only one more year after the trade, while Brooks would play another 9 seasons for the Bengals, going to four Pro Bowls. The trade for Brooks is widely regarded as the best trade in franchise history.
I grew up watching Brooks absolutely shred defenses on the ground, in the air, and in the return game. He was great every time he touched the ball, and the Bengals took full advantage of his versatility and explosiveness. How good was Brooks at catching the ball? Brooks is still among the top 15 all time leading receivers in Bengals history. And the Bengals have had a lot of great receivers. You cannot view Brooks as just a running back, he was a playmaker and a weapon, which is the source of the argument for Brooks vs. Dillon.
James Brooks’ yards per carry, yards per reception, and all purpose yards put him in an elite tier of players: Marshall Faulk, Marion Motley, and James Brooks stand far above other NFL players as multifaceted play making weapons. Motley and Faulk are in the pro football HOF. Between 1968 and 2005 (when Marshall Faulk retired), Brooks was the ONLY member of the 30/30 Club (30+ rushing and receiving TDs, accomplished by only 7 NFL players to date). As of 2022, Brooks’ 14,910 total net yards rank him #41 on the NFL’s list of career all-purpose yards.
James Brooks Career rushing: 1685 attempts, 7,962 yards, 49 TDs. Career Receiving: 383 receptions, 3,621 yards, 30 TDs. Career KR: 132 attempts, 2,762 yards. Career PR: 52 attempts, 565 yards. Total attempts: 2,252. Total Yards: 14, 910. Total TDs: 79. Total yards per touch: 6.62. Total TDs per touch: .035.
Corey Dillon stats: 2,618 rushes, 11,241 yards, 82 TDs. 244 receptions, 1,913 yards, 7 TDs. KR: 7 for 186 yards. Total touches: 2,869. Total yards: 13,340. Total TDs: 89. Total yards per touch: 4.65. Total TDs per touch: .031.
James Brooks had 1,570 more yards than Corey Dillon on 617 fewer touches. Yes Corey is the all time leading Bengals rusher, his rushing stats are clearly better than Brooks’. But Brooks was more productive and more efficient than Dillon, he was a weapon in the run game, the pass game, and the return game, and he gets nothing like the credit he deserves. I voted for him this year, and will continue to vote for him until he’s enshrined in the Bengals Ring of Honor.

As great of a runner Dillon was, Brooks should be ahead of him. I was happy to see that. Have really enjoyed this series. Thank you

James brooks was a beast. He lined up at fullback a ton for ickey and blocked for him. His 360 td catch vs chargers was unreal. He was a bruising runner. He would launch himself forward. And most importantly every time he was tackled afterwards he would stretch the ball out another yard for the ref like he should have gotten it. I pray for another back like him.

From a fan that started in 68 if ur asking.? Haven't seen top 10 of course overall but at first blush Krumrie seems too low and Max too high. Plus by a very very close call CD should probably be ahead of JB at rb? You asked?? Great series!

💯! Maybe Steelers fans in 2040 will have to complain about the "Burrow Dynasty Bengals" getting all the pro bowls & HOF nods. Then we'll get it all back

IMO, you got it right ranking Brooks ahead of Dillon, Joe. Brooks did it all and was electrifying. And he didn't dump on the organization and throw a hissy-fit because he didn't get the recognition he imagined he deserved.

Fantastic part of the list. True legends to the franchise. Also means a handful of Bengals that I watched when I first became a fan made the Top 10, so looking forward to the last few vids for the reveal!

I remember it so well when Boomer handed Dillon the ball but a defender came flying in to get a tackle for loss but Boomer threw his body at the guy and Dillon picked up several yards.

MNF cost Dillon 1,000 yds at minimum. That Esiason/Dillon O was dominant.

Love your work Mr goodberry. It's debatable for sure between brooks and dillion. Just my preference I like dillion better. 6 straight 1000 yard seasons. He was just dominant. Ownership was just as much at fault as Corey was for the way he left. Brooks was great though as well. Who dey!
