I'm not going to waste my time arguing that Best was better than any other player but the reason why you don't see any goals like Messi running the length of the pitch with the ball was that back in the 60s and 70s you could maybe beat 1 or 2 players but the third would hack you down.Actually that was why Maradonna was such a special player,he could beat several players at a time when maybe football had been cleaned up a bit but fouling was still very common.

John Aston was a nightmare for Benfica on the left side during the whole match. This left gaps for Best and Charlton to get creative. Quite rightly the man of the match.
What used to make people scratch their heads in those days was the referees allowing European teams get away with such terrible fouls. Best was nearly kicked off the pitch in this game and I remember other matches where the refs were so biased I’m amazed any players didn’t break bones,the refs were no protection.
He and i have a similar style of play. Always on the attack. I would have passed a bit more than he has in this, and i dont typically attempt to draw the foul, but a lot of the passes i did see and a lot of patterns he runs are similar to what i would choose. Part of why hes my favorite. I played like this before i knew about him.
