- Is It Legal To Make A U-Turn From A Center Left Turn Lane? AKA Shared Or Two-Way Left Turn Lanes
There are a lot of DO's and DON''Ts when it comes to using Center Left Turn Lanes properly. One of the questions that has come up to me about them is, "Can I use the center left turn lane to make a U-turn?" I spoke with local law enforcement, and searched online for the correct answer before I came up with my conclusion in this video. And of course, your local city, town, or municipality can come up with their own regulations regarding U-turns within their own jurisdiction. Anywhere that U-turns are prohibited there should be signs posted stating that. Thanks for watching, and I hope this helps someone out there!

Evidently, making a U-turn at a center island near a green light is illegal near Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut. Even though there is _no_ highly visible sign prohibiting it! A cousin of mine found that out the hard way. Luckily, he got out of it as a first offender.
Varies by jurisdiction. It is NOT legal in NM. 66-7-322 paragraph C defines the ONLY valid use for this lane as making a left turn. Specifically, "Any maneuver other than a left turn from this center lane will be deemed a violation of this section;"
Best advise ... avoid any U-turn ! If you consider that 85% of drivers can't make a proper left turn of any kind at the best of times, making a U-turn is next to impossible for the majority of drivers. Whether it's legal or not is irrelevant.
i must be in the one percent lol
I just made a u-turn from the middle lane in one continuous motion which is what led me to this video.
It’s nice when you have that much room to maneuver!

Thank uuu
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching.
The primary mistake people make when using the central left-turn lane (yes, that is what it is) is to use it for an on- ramp to pull out into and then merge into traffic. All the time I think people are going to pull out in front of me and hit me, only to find out they are pulling out from across the street (my far left) into the central turn lane in order to then merge into traffic. This is so dangerous and stupid. It used to NEVER happen, but now I see it all the time. People don't want to wait until it's clear both ways.
nah bro this is it fr
If they waited they'll be waiting all day in those high traffic areas if no one lets them merge.
@@jeffghant4760 All too true. To paraphrase Blanche Dubois from A STREET CAR NAMED DESIRE: "One can never rely on the kindness of fellow motorists."
Yeah but centre left lanes with two lanes on either sides make no sense because then if you don't do the merge maneuver, you will likely not get a big enough break in traffic to turn left from over 3 lanes (if its rush hour).
When you get into the center lane and are planning to turn left into traffic, can you slowly drive on the center lane, looking to see when there is plenty of space to get in, then drive into the lane?
This question should clarify that you can drive when you see no one in the center lane.
Is it legal in California?
Thank you, thank you, thank you
You are very welcome!
Not in most of Oregon.
To be fair it’s Oregon. Police have a lot more to deal with
Kinda self explanatory
I don't believe it.
In America a man can do whatever he wants. Is that not the spirit of MERICA?
Ha ha ha
Within reason.
