Lynyrd Skynyrd "Freebird" First time after Gary's Passing

- This is the first public performance of Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd since the passing of Gary Rossington. This was at the Florida Strawberry Festival on 3/12/23
Most young people don't understand that Lynyrd Skynyrd singlehandedly saved America from Disco!
yeah but disco was great
@@lincolnsobral Where I grew up the city Guidos were into disco but out in the suburbs and the rural areas the kids detested Disco!
You sure got that right!!! ( Disco sucks)

Well I'm going to see them 824 23 and it said the somebody Uncle Kracker playing opening up what the f***? I hope they got rid of that I didn't hear it on the radio today on the ad. This is today’s Skynyrd. I have seen the original and this version. Both were excellent. This version has been around much longer than the original. By the way, the “original” had multiple members. We should appreciate both versions. The current version is keeping the music alive. For that matter, the current version is keeping Southern Rock alive. Southern Rock is a dying genre - swallowed up by country. Enjoy both. … Just my 2 cents.
I saw them at the Aladdin theater in Las Vegas before the crash
Right on
I never got to see the original band but have seen the current band and they are the real deal in my book cuz they have kept the music alive! This band is my religion, my church, my kind of family! Kind of hard to write this and listen to this song with out Gary. For some reason I'm crying like a baby! Rest in playing Gary!😢 thanks for the memories!
Me too
You worded it perfectly ! Long live Skynrd !!
Gary would have wanted it this way... The show must go on. What a beautiful tribute
The show must go on because Johnny can't sell the JVZ Band albums and few people buy the new cds. Johnny is a touring "musician?-- not really/gum chewing totally serious singer. Yeah, he needs a JOB.
Yessss
I agree with Ronnie's widow. now that all original members of skynyrd have passed, at the very least the band change it's name....Without at least one of the originals, it's just no longer Skynyrd but rather a tribute band.
@@briandobson5135 lynyrd skynyrd family would be good I think
You mean said the money grabbers can keep grabbing money 💰💰
That was the best heartfelt tribute I have ever seen. There are no words for the beautiful emotions that came out from each band member showing their love for Gary. Gary was my friend. It's my hope that everyone stays together and writes new music for Gary and the original crew! See ya in STURGIS boys!
RIP to a legend Gary Rossington.long live Skynard!
That"s it spell Skynyrd wrong.
I use to Date a Lady Named Brenda, I used to take her on road trips to Warren Pennsylvania. Reece took it upon himself he showered the floor with salt & then he started dancing in it !!!
Keep the music alive, nobody else can do it like this, and sell out every show, 36 years after what was supposed to be a 6 week Tribute Tour. Gary is gone now but the Free Bird flies on!
But change the name of the band! Stop using the 'Hall of Fame' band's name.
Show some respect to the 'Hall of Fame' members!
R.I.P. Gary, was a long good ride ! 😥 YOU ALL HAVE BEEN FAMILY TO SO MANY OF US.
YOU ARE AMERICA !
Until we meet again, my friend.
God love ya,
Wulfy
Lynyrd Skynyrd will never be forgotten - The Legacy will live on forever !
🤟😎👍
Always Love you Gary God bless you 💘
So sad that they're all gone, but their music will live on forever.
I consider Ricky M an original member
Artimus Pyle ??? Alive and kicking(pun intended) we need to enjoy him and his band while we can!
@@bradhutchinson4779 He was, he was their drummer.
HEAR THIS….
Mirror BALL…as long as #wesharedTOGETHER!!!! #GREATMUSICRIGHThere.
Who would have thought back in ‘73, that they would still be playing this 50 years later! Just amazing. Hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did back in the day.
isn't it awesome though. The 70's will live forever
Who is “they”? They are all gone.
Do you think that those young kids in 1964 in Jacksonville FL knew that their music would be filling arenas almost 60 years later?
Who would have thought a bunch of mediocre imposters would be allowed to use the sacred name ? Unbelievable
@@davidrice3337 who would have though that a platform would someday lend itself to people whos opinions matter about as much as fly Sh#t
Been a LS fan my entire life. Was lucky enough to see them before and after the accident. I doubt there is a bigger fan anywhere. That said, as much as I appreciate the effort put forth by these artists. They are not Lynyrd Skynyrd. Like many other aging bands. Time to hang it up. Their timeless music will be with us forever. Thanks to the current lineup. RIP Lynyrd Skynyrd!
This band is a disgrace. The seven guys on the cover of "Street Survivors" are all in the ground except Artimus and he knows what he's doing. How can you justify this karaoke act with no one from that band left ?
@@derhandtrommler I hear what you're saying. However, I wouldn't say they are a disgrace. Ricky Medlock played with them in the early days of the band. Before his time with Blackfoot. He could have easily been on the cover of SS. He is the only one though. I can appreciate what they do to keep the music alive. But it is a tribute band now. And like hearing Vince Gill playing with the Eagles. The music is good. Just not the same.
They are open about being a tribute band. The Lynyrd Skynyrd trademarks and copyrights belong to the Rossington, Van Zandt and Collins families. If they don't keep the name active they lose some of those protections after a few years. If that happens anyone will be legally able to print and sell LS t-shirts and posters without paying to license the trademarked content. Someone could even sell a Lynyrd Skynyrd commerative bourbon. That's why this band is touring under the Lynyrd Skynyrd banner. The same thing is happening with the Allman Brothers tribute band "Trouble No More" and Foreigner doing shows with no original members. Expect to see a lot more officially sanctioned tribute bands as old popular musicians retire and die.
@@zone4garlicfarm Cool stuff i did not no
Well as far as Johnny Van Zant goes there's a slight possibility he would have become the bands singer even had Ronnie lived.
From a 2018 interview:
"Gary Rossington revealed in the interview that Ronnie would always point out Johnny as the most accomplished singer in the family. He also wished his younger brother to be sent to the Juilliard School to get a formal education in music if he died.
Rossington said:
“He always said: ‘Johnny’s the best singer in the family.’ He also said: ‘If I die, y’all send him to Julliard.”
"They also shared that reaching the end of Van Zant’s career, he wasn’t actually sure about continuing to perform as the band’s lead vocalist. He still wanted to be a part of the band, but preferred to get involved in other occupations as he wanted to take a step back from handling the vocal duties due to his throat issues."
To me it sounds like Ronnie was possibly paving the way for Johnny to take over the vocalist duties for the band eventually.
I was 16 when Freebird was released, a teenager saturated in the rock culture, an “A student” in my study of rock history while failing Algebra. The long journeys those songs like Freebird took us, the slow build up, the frenzied level of power-noise, the lyrics that we could all understand, could respond to, could sing with, the live shows in stadiums of so many thousands of our tribe, focused hypnotically on the drive the pulse with no cell phone distractions ripping us fro the trance of our moment. Skynyrd. There songs, their American imprint on the scene helped shape the hard headed independent generation that was coming to age after the birth of freedom and death in the sixties…..we are all alittle freer thanks to Freebird!!!
Love Gary, don't forget Allen Collins, another great guitarist. Steve Gains also. Good tribute, but will never be what it was. Rest in peace L.S. your music is timeless!!!
Don’t forget Ed king!
@@110toacountrynearyou7 None of us can.
It will always be what the band is a performing touring Southern rock band regenerated with new members passing the music on to the new generation.
RIP Gary Rossington you'll be missed. Not only by the band. But us fans too
I'm 58 now, and I was old enough to remember all the great rock bands coming into our lives and blessing us with great music, but now young enough to still be here to see them dropping off left and right lately due to deaths...one great band after another. But we will keep the music alive!
R.I.P Gary
52 here agreed
Like kids excited seeing Journey With Arnel and I am like that’s cute saw them with Perry or seeing Foreigner with Lou grammatica
1964 ✌🏼
@@brentbush9886 same!
56 and couldn’t agree more
Great to see Rickey Medlocke, an original member from when the first started, up there keeping the music alive..
Ricky is not a founding member though. It's time to close the book on Skynryd.
Rickey Medlocke and Artimus Pyle are both early members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, but they're not original members of the group.
@@joshuabrooks4907 guess we might as well close the chapter on baseball, because all the original members are dead. The Yankees are just a fake copy. Right ?
Same logic
The current singer is the little brother of the original singer Ronnie Van Zant. Johnny definitely looks like his big brother but his voice is different.
The guitar player started with them as the drummer the good looking older one with white hair play the drums in the original L. S .
I cried the whole way through the video. That was awesome! So sad Gary died at 71. I thought he would live so much longer. Freebird is one of my favorite songs. I have been listening to Skynyrd since 1974. Awesome band! ❤️❤️❤️🐦🦋
Gary almost died 3 or 4 times. I’m glad he made it to 71
@killacommieformommy if you know the story behind, “That Smell” then you knew that long long ago. Whiskey bottle, brand new car,oak tree your in my way….. Gary wrecking that Ford Grand Torino was the reason Ronnie wrote the song.👍👏❤️🎙
Now they call you Prince Charming, can’t speak a word when you’re fulla Ludes….
I will support this Band Until I am Dead. Not for the new members but for my Heros who wrote and played these songs, Steve Gaines ,Gary Rossington and Allen collins along with Ed king Are rare Men who can not be replaced . Honoring this Tribute is all I have besides playing their Music and keeping it alive, Ronnie Vanzant was a genious, or was he just real as it gets , wore his shirt on his sleeves and told it like it was, FREEBIRD FOREVER. LONG LIVE LYNYRD SKYNYRD !!
I agree, even Gary himself don't care about people say that Skynyrd is now a "tribute band"
I was very fortunate to see them about 2 months before the plane crash, I was 14. Always a Skynyrd fan
I'm with you brother I saw them before the nothing fancy. Final album whatever release for a $5 ticket right up front. Ronnie Van Zan had a pack of cigarettes rolled up in his T-shirt sleeve. They played everything all night. Came on for a second on call everybody.asking what could they play. And Gary went. Into. The intro of. I am on the hunt never. Forget. Itii
Me too ! I was 15
Yeah, saw them in Madison, WI about 3 months prior. Will never forget the date 7/7/77. Absolutely awesome show.
I saw them 7-2-77 !! The plane crashed on my birthday Oct 20 just by chance I had my Skynyrd t-shirt I bought at the concert on when I got the news!! Kind of ironic!!🙏💯
Life goes on but Lynyrd Skynyrd is gone forever. Thanks for all the memories. ❤
Well Rickey Mordlocke is still with them, since 1971.
Life goes on but now Gary's gone this version of lynyrd synyrd should call it a day

This has got to be the best Lynyrd Skynyrd cover band EVER!
'You Got That Right"😉
@@terrydawson8371 A great Skynyrd song by the way.
The lead guitarist was the drummer with original band started so really is it not the real band . Lead singer is brother to original singer.
@@derithross8314 I know, I was being sarcastic but I still like this line up.
Lynyrd Skynyrd was of a group of musicians that had a lot to sing about. With Gary's passing there is now a period at the end of Lynyrd Skynyrd. There is no one who can or ever will come close to matching to the original members. The plane crash was the beginning of the end and with Gary's passing it is now the end. Thank you for the music and the memories, forever.
Well said!
I call this the "Official Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Band".
Amen
The Lynyrd Skynyrd name should have been retired 20 years ago.
What they've been doing for the past 20 years is not even close.
And this little tribute is absolutely horrible.
Why are people in such a hurry to bury Skynyrd it's like ok hurry up put 8 ft under where they belong
They will always be Skynyrd to me
Agreed
Hey as long as the lead singer is Ronnie’s brother, they are the real thing.
They band is all together again. ✝️
Great music lives on forever - RIP Gary.
These guys are definitely the best Lynyrd Skynyrd cover band around.
The best ones around at least have both coinciding instruments in tune in the beginning 😂😂
I'm glad I got to see the band when Gary Rossington was still there. I wanted to say at least I saw one of the original Band members.
I wish them well for the future but for me the show is over. R.I.P Gary
Facts same here
As far as i am concerned Ricky is an original member .I hope the group will fold up the tents and leave one hell of a legend behind when he is gone!
Quite an honor for Damon to play that slide solo on this particular occasion. He had to be pretty emotional.
I hope they play forever. People want to come together and enjoy this amazing music in a live setting. Zero original members, yes. But Johnny is there and so is Rickey Medlocke, let them do their thing. If they fill venues, put people to work, and give fans a night to forget all their troubles that works for me.
Yeah u right...
Brought tears to my eyes There are no words that I can say KEEP ON ROLLIN and ROCKIN LONG LIVE ON LYNYRD SKYNRD YOUR BROTHERS WOULD BE SO MUCH PROUD OF YOU GUYS KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK GOD BLESS YOU ALLL 🙏 TO THE ONE'S WHO HAVE FLEW TO THE OTHER SIDE RIP 🙏
Gary would have wanted them to continue with the music and that is why they do it ,its about the music and legacy of all the original members may they all rest in peace ,the legacy continues
RIP Gary. Not one of you will be forgotten ❤️😞😢😢
Skynyrd will always hold a place in my heart they are a classic southern rock band. Those of the group whom have passed rip your truly missed
I have seen them 3 times since 1989, always a great show. Never let it die. Rock on!!
The Gospel of Skynyrd from Simple man to Freebird the way we should all live we take so much for granted we should ask ourselves everyday if I LEAVE HERE TOMORROW WILL YOU REMEMBER ME ..for the right reasons Skynyrd has been with me my whole life through the Ups and Downs ... RIP..Thanks for the Greatest Music ever
RIP all members who have passed on
Let me have the 1976 version over this any day of the week!
I watched the 1st 4:37, and now I'm sitting here bawling like a baby. I saw the original Lynyrd Skynyrd EVERY TIME they came to Birmingham, Sweet Home Alabama. After the plane crash, I couldn't make myself go see them ever again. But I appreciate them carrying on their memory........Southern Rock at it's very finest. RIP my Southern brothers.
We know the answer, YES we will remember all of you. Love the Skynyrd, best band of all time.
No disrespect here, but Ricky Medlocke had some good songs with his band, Blackfoot. Would be nice if they brought some of those songs in with the Skynyrd songs. Train Train and Highway Song for sure.
Gary Rossington & Ronnie van Zandt were on vacation in Grand Cayman in 1974 shortly after Sweet Home Alabama became a hit. They were driving a VW Beetle, driving past a local residence where a house party was in progress. They stopped, came and sat in with the band (The Barefoot Man) and played "Mean Woman Blues" . We asked them for SHA but they say they needed another guitar player (to do Ed King's parts). Great memories!! RIP Gary & Ronnie!!!
For all the haters out there, I know Gary, Ronnie and the rest of the originals would be proud of these guys carrying on the tradition. Well done, boys. ❤
Do you?
That's impossible to know. Obviously you're not a musician either. They started the song out of tune and out of time for gods sake, amateur hour. I"ve heard many bar bands cover Free Bird far better. The real lineup was brilliant musicians all around, this tribute band falls short. JVZ looks like he's more interested in sitting on the toilet than being there.
Amen to that
Amen brother. I guess some people would let the wonderful music die. How sad 😔😔
It's not about "letting the music die".
It's about tarnishing a great band's name! Just acknowledge that this is a tribute band & change the name!
Lynyrd Skynyrd will never die ! It is not the musik at all. They are my heros forever !!

All of Lynyrd Skynyrd now plays from heaven thank you for being the greatest band to ever be heard. Gary you are with your band brothers now. Heaven has the greatest southern Rockband of all time....
As Gary said himself, just a tribute band. They are all gone. RIP
Man you can REALLY miss Gary on that intro. So much soul when he played slide. Can definitely hear a difference.
Ya think? No way, anybody can sing these songs, play those guitar parts. I mean, there's a whole band dedicated to duplicating those songs. The sh1t noise you are hearing is actually exactly the way the band played it. Shut up and buy a ticket and all the new cds. Shut up and roll one. The music will sound better.
I agree; I can hear the difference as well.
Damon's playing slide on an SG as well, everyone does sound different tho, I can tell it's not Gary from little nuances too
Gary used to do the birds chirping sounds too at the beginning of the song. Oh well Damon has been doing this since 2021. And he's darn good.
@@trevorthompson330 Yes, different but Damon is a very good guitarist too.

I thank it's a very great song thanks guys for keeping it a live!!!!!!!
I was lucky enough to see Gains, Collins, and Ed King. This is a great tribute
Gary passed the torch to Damon, Gary gave them his blessing to continue on
So I'm guessing Damon Johnson is the new guitarist taking Gary's place?
@jammer70s Gary handpicked him to take his position and be his successor if something was to happen to him.

Just watching that is wild they are my opinion the greatest band there ever was and their right the legacy lives on and all the past members may rip!And their music will always be around forever !!
I was very fortunate to see these guys on the one more from the road tour in 1976, I saw them three more times and every time was excellent
Outstanding
I can't imagine if i went on stage without one of my bandmates right their by my side but I know they would allow me to continue in the journey and that's what Gary's doing for johnny and Ricky
They are used to it as sadly Gary barely played the last nearly 2 years. Damon Johnson has filled in for him
Even that oak tree is cryin' right now. R.I.P. Gary, you're not forgotten, and already sorely fuckin' missed!
This is so cool and just one great song of all time free brids is truly one all times great song just so beautifully
Thank you guys for keeping it going for Skynard. And letting the band live on. I am sure they are all looking down on you guys and are very proud of what your doing. God Bless you all.
A bunch of young kids who were ALL friends with a dream and a tremendous talent who grew up together with the same desire and continued to play music with a drive like never before what a truly amazing contribution to the music world and their fan base and now they're all gone the music lives on a tremendous resemblance with Beethoven wouldn't you say
Hell we OWE Skynyrd!! They changed the face of rock or at least added some bew expressions to it! Before them we didn't really have southern rock. And I for one am sooooo glad!! Well here it is tomorrow and now you've all left us and I can without a doubt say we will remember you!! And that things now WILL NEVER BE THE SAME. My husband died in July and now the last of our beloved founding Skynyrd members has gone too. Skynyrd and AC/ DC have always been my two very best and favorite bands. I'm old and its the end of an era. Without my hubby dunno if I will ever go to another concert. We were junkies for live shows and we went to 3-4 hundred. And 4 SMC's. Billys last, Peters first and 2nd and 3rd. Time to hang up all my memorabilia I guess and pics with bands etc. I feel like George Jones! I don't need your rocking chair!
One of the greatest southern rock bands of all times, rock on Lynyrd Skynyrd you guys are carrying on a Legacy of some of the best songs ever written, rock on
I couldn't get myself to get out of bed for a
Week that day 10:20:77. I talk to Ronnie daily and will never get over his song ending
Thnks Johnny Ronnie is very proud
In the music world there are legends there are G.O.A.T.s and there’s Lynyrd Skynyrd
LS was great when I saw them with Johnny. This was the last song they played and everyone was holding hands at the beginning of Free Bird.
I'm 63 and I've been a fan since the band broke in the early 70s. Unfortunately, I never saw them live but I remember exactly where I was when I heard about the crash. I bought Street Survivors and played the hell out of it, I still have the album. Life went on and there was a time I didn't give much thought about the band until I watched the VH1 Behind the music documentary which for some reason just got me back into appreciating their great music again. What strikes me most about the original lineup is how young they all were! And unbelievably talented they were as musicians. It sucks to think about all of the what-ifs however, I'm glad they kept going early on with all of the surviving original members. But now, and with no disrespect to the present-day lineup, since they've essentially all gone up to rock and roll heaven I think it's time to call it a day. God bless them all!
I'm the same age i can walk to the spot where i was lessoning to simple man when they announced the plane crash, and that Ronny and Cassy didn't make it and its still hard for me to Lisson to simple man to this day.

If you saw Rossington-Collins, you still saw twice as many members of Skynyrd than Skynyrd had in their lineup before Gary passed away.
I'd be more than content to have seen Rossington-Colllins. Those guys put out incredible music with virtually every member in the band excepting Ronnie and Artimus. . New stuff while paying legitimate homage to the music of LS only a decade removed. Thank your stars and don't put too much emphasis on seeing a band that changes more parts than a race car. You were blessed.
Love the real Lynyrd Skynyrd, not a bunch of guys who call themself Skynyrd. I thought they couldn’t use the name when no original members are in the band.
I guess im old the only one I recognize is Medlocke
You cam totally hear Garys absence. 😢😢😢 Dale my heart hurts for you! I lost my husband of 38 years in July 8 days before his retirement. Our first grandchild was born March 1st. And I am so devastated. I can imagine you are too. Yoz guys were married about the same time as us if Im not mistaken. We wed in 84. All my love sister!!
I so want to watch this. I couldn't get past the first few seconds. I was immediately transported back to 1981. The Capital Center - Landover, MD. My first time seeing Charlie Daniels with Rossington Collins opening. Just seeing that spotlight on the chrome eagle sent the tears flowing. Just as they did back then. A while back, I stumbled across a video from a CDB Volunteer Jam of the guys playing for the first time since the plane crash. Leon was in a sling. When I realized what it was I was watching, I started crying like a bitch. Just as I am now. I will forever be thankful for the joy brought to me and the rest of the world by our fallen musical heroes. Can't say rest in peace ... not to a guitarist. Rock in Heaven Gary!
The show must go on. As long as people will buy tickets they should continue. Those that don't like it can see Taylor Swift.
