Try jiggling the key while it runs, if it cuts off or stops cutting off it could be the ignition switch. Also my vr was doing the same exact thing for about 8 months, spent alllll this money on multiple parts figuring it out, nothing fixed it. Pulled the ecu and swapped the chip and the problem was completely gone!

If you are checking fault codes on turned off engine it will always show camshaft position sensor error in 1.8 abs. Try checking on working engine. To my mind the problem might be in ecu or alarm.

Ideas. The gas tank cap may have problems letting air in the tank. Have seen cars die due to the tank not breathing air. The crank case could be getting pressurized due to the oil breather being blocked, thas stalling the engine. The temperature sensor for the ECU may be faulty causing all sort of problems. Or the simpliest thing in the world.... sparkplugs. All of these worth checking.

Hi Christian, Do you have an ignition timing light? After the car is warmed up set the distributor at 6 BTDC on the flywheel at 900 rpm and just leave it be.
Kind of basic but check the battery/alternator voltage with a voltmeter when its running. Make sure its > than 11.5v.
Do you have vacuum caps? I'd start plugging up all the vacuum lines coming off the manifold (including the one going to the brake booster - obviously don't go for a drive like that) including any lines going to say the evap solenoid. See if the car still dies when all these are capped.
Doesn't die anymore... check evap solenoid first.
PS: On the A3s the ignition switches also tend to cause all kinds of flaky issues as well when they start to go intermittent. Headlights going off randomly then coming back on, etc. Something to check.

if it's the hall sensor, make sure the plug's pins are all clean and no wires are broken. I had a similar issue once where my car (MK3 GTS 1.8 MP9) died while driving multiple times. Only after spraying multi-purpose lubricant in both connector and plug, the problem was gone.

  • @chrisrosen2147

Have you checked fuel pressure? This seems like your fuel regulator is acting up like it has a small rip or hole in it's diaphragm and I haven't seen it mentioned as a replaced part yet. Also an easy way to check for vacuum leaks (eyes don't always give the best results) spray vacuum lines, intake manifold basically anywhere before the exhaust and if idel picks up it's a leak.

  • @ryanlott6309

Cam sensor in that car is the hull switch in the distributor bud. Stupid idea but this engine is close to a mk2 motor. And the coolant temp sensor does stupid shit like this. Seems to do it once it's warm. Just a thought. Also as some one else said. Try fuel pump relay and ecu relays. Felt with a Ford that would start run drive then the fuel pump relay would over heat and fail causing a shit off. Leave it to sit and then it would start and run again. Till the relay over heated again.

  • @MrMinecraftEpidemic
    @MrMinecraftEpidemic 5 років тому

Had a Mk3 Jetta trek, camshaft position sensors are known to ‘lose signal’ and kill the engine when they get hot (if they’re old) after about a 15-20 min drive my car would die, after sitting for a while and she cools down she would start right back up and repeat. Sensors cheap so might as well replace it.

The ABS or AAM has no camshaftsensor, the Engine get this Signal from the Hall Sensor, inside the ignition distributor.
I think this Failt will always displayed when the Engine is not Running. Maybe you Check this first.
What about a vacuum building up in your tank by running the Engine ? Do you test running the Engine with open fuel cap ?
If its now running for long time, than the relais for the carbon filter can it be.

Clogged catalytic converter? That caused stalling on my aba. It would idle but wouldn't drive. Other then that it's losing either fuel or spark so when it won't start use a spark tester and see if it's getting spark. Same thing for fuel see if its getting it while trying to crank it. Check out Thomas exovcds here on UA-cam. He has vids showing how to test the ignition coil and the ecu control of the coil with a test light. I hope this helps.
