It's the opposite for me. I can't get a way from people there, I sometimes like complete isolation. I don't know why, maybe because I'm from Texas but I feel at home with Colombians, like part of the group, not like an outsider at all. I prefer to stay away from English speakers when I'm there.
@@AKJoel Most of them are going to be in Houston. I'm from Texas too. We were under Spain and Mexico in our history. There are a lot of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans here. Although the Colombian and Mexican cultures aren't the same, they are very similar. In some regards Medellin felt a lot like Dallas: somewhat extensive public transportation, the dry heat climate, the big city atmosphere, bad traffic, extreme wealth and poverty coexisting side by side, entrepreneurship, and so on.
@@AKJoel Texas is very hispanic, almost everyone is mixed with Mexican or some other hispanic. My wife is from Colombia and we do meet Colombians but the funny thing is she avoids Colombians when she's here. But yes there seems to be a lot of them.
Another professionally done, well said video, packed with invaluable info. Ive watched many videos on Medellin, and Joel's are by far the best, most professional ! Thank you so much Joel!!!!
I find it difficult to relate to/connect with most Colombians, largely due to socioeconomic factors. Been way easier for me to befriend other foreigners.
Lmao then why stay there? You are basically living in the US at that point. You are probably living in a gringo area (most expensive) and only have gringo friends.
Lol i was just thinking about this last night. Yeah. You feel like you are outside the bubble. Like a ghost. You can see everyone else but you cant interact with anyone
@@AKJoel lol oh i plan to! Already got a gal there and I'm ashamed of myself because I'm Puerto Rican so I should be able to speak Spanish but I'm working on it. But what I can speak I can speak very well
Love colombia everything about it but I met a girl at unicentro and she tried to scope me out first date.. then people I thought were cool from laureles tried to get me setup I'm from Mexico and it's way more dangerous but not in this manner maybe just bad luck IDK 😢😮
Parts of Brazil are very dangerous too. In Colombia there tends to be a lot of unorganized crime where females work with male gang members in targeting foreign men, no matter if they're Hispanic or otherwise. In Brazil it's much easier to find normal women who want to be with you for you as opposed to being with you for "plata", but it's further away and Portuguese is a different language. Beautiful but deadly. Unfortunately, there are a lot of Colombian women who fit that description. Certainly not all, of course, but that is true for a lot of them who target foreign men for one reason or another.
It is normal when you do not speak the language not all colombians can affkrd tonlearn English. It happens in all cou ntries. I live in Canadá and it happens all the time. In Colombia you have to pay atención to the people you meet cause it could be dangerous , we as colombians we do know that.
Much of these pieces of advice apply to Barranquilla as well. Especially "choose wisely" AKA "be selective". I learned the hard way... very few expats here are decent human beings (most are opposite). I have a VERY bad taste in my mouth now, but part of my mistake was that I maintained "an open mind and open heart" and "gave everyone a chance". For my efforts, I got used, abused, insulted, gossiped about, and defrauded of 350 mil pesos. Now I am a hermit (been so for a few months now). I don't even date anymore (can't find/meet any non-prepagos), nor any decent guys to hang with. It is better to be isolated than continually meeting toxic people. I value my peace of mind. Before year-end, I'll be leaving this god forsaken town and trying a different region/city of Colombia (but not Medellin) I plan to be FAAARR more selective in future attempts to socialize.

Good morning AK, Mike Faca here. As you know, I live in another city which is smaller. I agree with you on get out there. I have found that I am the only expat here, so I take a positive mental attitude. People like positive people. I stand out because I am 6Ft. tall. I approach people with a smile and a handshake and introduce myself. 99% of all people are good and I find that they want to get to know me. So if you want to assimilate, you need to break the ice. Have a great day.

During holidays mostly Colombia can be a lonely place. Probly need a girlfriend
I always travel outside the country with my girlfriend during Christmas/New Years so maybe you're right lol
Good stuff man, your videos really helped me get an idea of Medellín for my trip in 2 weeks.
Glad I could help!

You could try going to networking events which are more focused around business and real estate. That will eliminate the socioeconomic issue.
@@AKJoel Good point, thanks for the tip!
