why does it feel like i'm about to spend my entire weekend binge watching your channel?? i'm about to start a garden because the grocery bill is about to overtake all my other bills combined with the exception of my mortgage. i've been in information overload for the last two months.
Peppers grow shockingly easy in my area. It was the tomatoes that were hard due to generations of tobacco farming here. They hate the soil. Took 3 years to grow to harvest but I finally got it down, so satisfying
The comment about holding back is definitely something that I didn't know was a thing I could, or should do. I will definitely plant on time and hold half back. Thanks for the great idea!
We are in zone 8b... Beginning Feb. 14'th, we got 9 inches of snow followed by 3 inches of rain...our small greenhouse where we usually germinate our seeds..lost electric as did many of us texans...everything in the greenhouse died...so I'm glad we didn't start new seeds like we usually would have in the greenhouse...total loss..
That's terrible but I understand. We had the same precipitation totals as you. We were able to keep our greenhouse at about 40 with propane heaters. We sure did go through a lot of propane though.
@@CountryLivingExperience I'm in zone 8b in FL along the gulf coast and just moved from zone 9b, so trying to get adjusted. After 2 years, I realize we go from cold to hot almost overnight. So, I bought a greenhouse that opens on both ends and started researching heaters. I bought the Big Buddy heater with fan, but yes, propane is expensive. Then, I discovered these deisel heaters. If I get the 8k it should keep my 10x20x7 greenhouse above 45°F with the coldest temp being 22°F. And if we get a forcast for colder, I reckon I can stick the propane heater out there. Unlike the propane heater, the deisels can run about 13 hrs each night for almost three nights on high on 1 gallon. Our deisel is running $3.69 a gallon right now. Lots cheaper than propane! So I'm not sure if I can get it ordered and installed in time for this winter, but that would definitely save a lot of money.
I have never used a cloth for my tomatoes they do really good

funny,,i am also in zone 8b but i live about 60 miles inland from the ocean in british columbia canada, my town is a farm town famous for its sweet corn and also lots of hops for beer grown here,, lotsa berry farms as well. .. i have learned growing zones only account for temperatures and not how fast they rise or fall.. where i live we get a long spring season so right now mid march my radishes and spinach are just beginning to germinate outside,, it wont reach 85f daytime temps here until july . our night are a few degrees above freezing and days rise up to 50f-65f. i wont start my tomato seeds for another week to transplant mid may..
how east are you? I'm in Bedias close to Madisonville. I'm getting a late start on some things, just found your channel. Thanks for all the good info, I now need to get pen and paper and rewatch :)
How are you taking care of your strawberry's during this weather. I just potted mine a week ago and have brought it indoors because of the weather, but it looks like the warmth of the home is going to kill my strawberry plant.
I planted collards and mustard greens last fall and they survived the cold weather we had in NC now seeing new growth. Are you saying that they will continue growing though spring and maybe though fall again
Good news is I found your channel and the info that I needed so badly. Bad news is I'm probably too late to start a few things that I wanted now. What happens if potatoes and onions go in a month late? For some reason I thought I had to wait until mid March to plant almost anything outside. I guess I was listening to too much info for the wrong zone.
They will be fine a month late. You are never too late. It is just the summer heat that knocks almost everything out. Most things don't go out till mid March but need to be started mid Feb.
I want to plant all cabages too early to avoid cabbage flies and other diseases that come when you plant when they say you should. Avoiding diseases is so important. You can do that by planting slightly early and preplanting inside in the nursery and taking them outside when they are 6 weeks old (this will also keep your beds filles constantly and reduce the time a crop occupies the bed and allow for at least 3 harvests a year p bed). There are but a few things you will have a hard time or are not an option for transplanting, like onions, garlic, and all tubers.
What changes in the same zone that gets a lot of snow. I have got an unusual amount of snow this season ( 3-4 feet ) between mid February and mid March. What should I do to change anything
The nice thing about zone 8b is that you can still start. You just have to provide shade in the mid-summer when it is so hot if your plants have not produced yet.
@@CountryLivingExperience yes. 75-80 this week but back to 65-75 next week. Nights are 39- 50 now but 35-41 last week and next. I lost 2 tomatoes. I tent with row cover and clear plastic at night till about 7-8 am. I live in high desert but 8b. So i must be in a micro-zone.

Groceries are getting more expensive by the day.
Our family just moved to our new home in Zone 8b. Thank you so much because being born and raised in a 5b zone I am trying to get my head around this.
It has taken me a while to get used to the seasons for sure. I am getting tomatoes in December still.
We can't start this early in Georgia because our last frost can last until early may
Nice video... Thanks for the dates... seems like this week a lot of the greenhouse will get cleared out! :) Growing in Tyler inside the loop!
You're welcome and thank you. I see a lot of plants sitting around at the local feed stores gearing up for the spring planting rush for sure.
I cover my strawberries with an old bed sheet, so far they survived. Great video. Thanks for the info.

when it gets hot use a 30% shade cloth for the tomatoes, and anything else that does not like the heat...

Yes, the growing zones are strange. We hit 75 yesterday but are at 55 today. It fluctuates greatly in the Spring.

Do you have an option on using 55 gallon plastic barrels cut in half?

You will just have to learn about your area and record it's distinct issues over time.
can the innoculant be added into the soil?
Sure. If needed.
