Awwww.... to get a dog to 17 years is testament to how great a life he has had with you. I had a dog with dementia, it's not easy, but we kept doing normal things right up to the end. Bless wee Piper. 😊

We are doing the same with our Ruby. We keep her routine as active and similar to her known life as we can. She has become food obsessed. Which is quite a challenge. She will be 17 in April.
We rescued her when she was 3 years old.

Sadly, all the diseases that can affect humans can affect dogs and even other animals. We're not different in this thing. We're one with the nature. They can even be born with things we clasify as autism or adhd. The same goes even for sexual orientations. We're all the same in this, the only thing is there are billions of us and we can easily communicate, so it might seem we're the only ones experiencing this.

The majority of animals we interact with daily evolved from a single template that has been the basis of what time has built upon. That core template is responsible for both the good and bad genetics we have as far as illnesses are concerned.

The chances of being born are so laughably low, it is a miracle he ever got the chance to, well, be Piper. It is a a miracle, and likely pure luck, we have gotten the chance to be ourselves as well. Awwww, sweet baby..getting old is no fun at all! I had a little dog who developed dementia when she was 17. She would stand in a corner and then whimper because she didn't realize all she had to do was back up a little and turn around. Daisy did have moments of lucidity and she would get around just fine. She even ran down the last part of the street on the way home after her walk because she knew it was close by. One day, Daisy simply collapsed in a heap on the livingroom floor. I called a friend who worked at the local vet clinic and she came out right away. Daisy was already unconscious and after two injections had drifted peacefully away. I have her ashes upstairs.

I hate when they get old ... it's the absolute WORST part of having pets, because you put so much time and love into them, and they give you so much love and good memories in return.
We had a little toy poodle we got at two years old from a bad home situation. Two was the estimate, he could have been older for all we knew. He lived until he was at least fourteen and had gone blind and deaf, then started having some breathing troubles and just was not living his best life anymore. He had also stopped barking/making noise entirely, which was so hard to see. Once, the summer before he died, he had managed to wander under the open recliner of our couch and couldn't figure his way out, poor boy! The recliner got shut with nobody the wiser. We quickly realized he was missing, and looked all over for him for nearly an hour, in and outside the house. We were terrified because we live near woods, and he'd actually fallen off a path up there innto some bushes recently.
I finally had the idea to check the couch, and sure enough there he was, unharmed, just sitting in the little hollow covered by the recliner! He was little, so just fit right in there.
He was our first poodle, and we loved and still love that little dog. He's why we got big poodles, and are crazy poodle people now. He saw me through my junior and senior years of high school, college ... more college ... a great loss ... I wouldn't trade the twelve years we had with him for anything though.

That progressed to him walking in circles. As long as their appetite stays good they continue on until an infection, virus, etc. overcomes them. Be comforted by the fact that you guided and cared for him well enough for him to reach that ripe old age when there was finally no gas left is his tank. You’re a wonderful parent.

I have three little guys myself. I can't imagine life without them.... I pray that I get twenty years with each one. That won't be long enough but I will be thankful to the lord if he allows me that time with each one. Even when they can't get around anymore and they are making a mess, I will happily clean up after them and will always love them. Even when they can't remember me anymore.... I know their hearts will still remember.... I will always be thankful for the unconditional love. They have given me when other people weren't there they always were. That old saying is so very very true. When I was looking for a hand I found a paw.... ❤ 🐾

I can totally relate to your experience. We rescued our Phoebe 13 years ago at 4years old. She too is going through doggie dementia. She has lost most of her teeth, has gone deaf and her vision is almost gone. She wanders around confused and sometimes just sits and stares. And then, there are the times she acts frisky, like a pup, jumping up and down.
We have had a wonderful life with her.

That's exactly what happened to ours. He had a series of strokes in the last two years of his life, the first and last being the worst. I often wonder if we shouldn't have tried so hard to bring him back after the first, as he'd stopped eating, because he was never the same after that and after each stroke he lost more and more ability to function. We made a lot of modifications such as ramps and a food bowl that was up on a pedestal so he didn't have to out his head right down, because he would lose his balance when he did that, but then he lost his sight, hearing and smell as well as his balance. By the end, he knew no one and was fearful of everything and when another stroke robbed him of what little he had left and he was clearly suffering, with no quality of life, we had to have him put down. He reached 17.5 years old.

What a lovely story, and thank you for sharing it. ❤ We had a spaniel called Sam, who lived to be almost 18 years old. He went blind at the end, but the most unlikely rescuer came to his aid. We adopted a kitten called Roo, who decided Sam was her mum; she slept with him, sucking the hair on his ear and kneading him to snuggle in and never left his side for even a moment. When Sam wanted to move around the house, Roo would walk right in front, waving her tail across his nose to guide him, stopping and starting for him to keep up. When Sam died, Roo sat on his grave for a day and a night, crying, and even when she left, she would often go back and sit on the grave for hours. Of course, animals don't have feelings do they? 🙄

Sadie was a Maltese mix my family had adopted from her previous owners. Her behavior hinted at neglect and even abuse, so she was very timid. Sadie would eventually open up to us as we showered her with love and attention.
It’s been almost a year now since she was put down. She was 15 years. I was away at college when I heard she was diagnosed with not only dementia, but was also going blind and suffering from arthritis. We knew she wouldn’t be with us for very long. I would return home to spend time with her in her final days before we had to leave for Cancun. It hurt realizing she barely remembered me at all. Yet, she was closest to me and my sister. We did our best to comfort her up to her final moments.
She was resting in her little bed on my lap when the vet announced she had departed. It was hard, yet it was the most viable option we had. Rest in piece pretty girl 🐶🐾

Bijou had dementia and cataracts in her final years as well and would do the same things as Piper. We've been without her for 2 years now and we miss her so very much. She was roughly 15 when she crossed the rainbow bridge. The one habit she never forgot was having a 6th sense for anyone curling up with a blanket, homing in on them, and finding a way to curl up under the blanket with them like a little warm ball. She was a skittish baby. If you won her over, you were in for life. We love and miss you very much lil'peanut.
