Step 1) throw away the strings that came with the kit
Step 2) toss out the electronics that came with the kit
Step 3) add additional 45 degree angle support screws to the neck and body. Putting these extra screws in before the rest of the neck screws will help the neck seat as tightly as possible into the cavity of the body. Making solid neck to body contact is critical to getting the best resonance and sustain out of your guitar. This is not a necessary step, in fact, it's rare to see this feature even on high end boutique guitars, but let's be honest, this guitar needs all the help it can get so why not?
Step 4) straighten the neck and level the frets. To straighten the neck, use the included larger Allen wrench and twist the truss rod a quarter of a turn at a time, checking to see if the entire neck is level with your notched straight edge. Once it's completely straight all the way across the neck, it's time level out the frets. Using a sharpie, lightly mark a line across the top of every fret, then lightly sand back and forth across the whole fret board with your sanding beam setup with 320 grit or finer sandpaper. This will make every fret the exact same height in relation to the fretboard, which will fix the fret buzz and out of tune notes I had, as well as allow me to have a good fast low action on the strings. Keep sanding level across all frets. Once you've touched the sharpie with the sanding beam on every single fret you will finally have completely leveled frets. I also recommend adding a few strips of masking tape at the 12th fret, and sanding all frets above the 12th some more, giving the higher frets a slight taper as you get higher up the neck. This, in my experience, allows for even lower action with a straighter neck.
Step 5) crown and polish the frets.
Using the fretboard guard, start sanding the sides of each individual fret being careful to not sand the very top part that we already sanded. Start with 320 grit, then Step up to 600, and finish by polishing each fret with steel wool.
Step 6) sand the neck and body.
Step 7) apply the finish of your choice.
Step 8) wire in new electronics.
Step 9) assemble all the pieces, and put a good set of strings on.
Step 10) give the guitar a full setup.

Go to Walmart, pick up a cheap metal yard stick, an 18" bubble level, rubber cement, and a few sheets of good grade sandpaper in grits you want.
Notch the yard stick at each fret location along one edge with a file, hacksaw, nibbler or angle grinder.
On the 18" bubble level glue sandpaper on the flat edge of level. Using rubber cement makes it easy to remove and change sandpaper strip.

Looks gorgeous, but you got some heavy metal oriented kinda pickups there.
Not saying it sounds bad, but it sounds nothing like a strat...
Perhaps with bigger strings, lower tune and some hi gain could handle some djent, but then the look of it would be hardly appropriate :)

You are right about hitting the frets above the 12th with more leveling.
On my semi-hollow Strat, there is definitely a high fret hump.
I've done the whole neck, and went over the high frets twice because notes were choking out.
...and it's better now, but those high frets above 12 still need to come down more. Last time I sanded the crap out of them but wasn't enough. The last 2 frets are the worst, but I'm going back armed next time. They will get with the program. : )

I watched your video again. I've been thinking of building a high end guitar. I was gonna order a high end body and neck. Started adding up prices and it was gettin crazy! I had one of the cheap kits come up from ebay on my email. I started to think...I can use that neck and body and replace the hardware and electronics and have a great guitar. I built two kits before and used your advice. I made the tools like you showed how to make and levelled and crowned the frets, with going over the high ones a second time. I also made bone nuts for each from scratch, which made a big difference too! I recently had an experienced guitarist play one of them and he was really surprised and said it played better than his Fender Strat! So I think if I use your tips and quality parts this time around, I can get that great guitar I'm looking for, and not go broke either! Thanks a lot Dan for all your help! Really appreciate it!👍😎🎸🎶

Graphite is made up of carbon and burned ashes would be close since the act of burning them reduces them to carbon. So technically Kurt Cobain's ashes could be used as a dry lube for the nut and bridge to reduce string breaks and help the strings to slide in those grooves when doing bends helping it return to its 0 position thus staying in tune a bit better.
Or you could just take his ashes and put them in a pressure chamber to make a diamond. The amount of money the Cobain diamond would cost would be almost stupid.

I did the woodwork and a hand rubbed and reliced the body and neck. I would recommend doing that with the kit rather than trashing the electronics and using more of the original al parts. In my spare time I build kit electric and acoustic guitars and give them to low income young kids that want to take a guitar class in school

Good vid, though I'd add this: it's possible to buy cheap wood blocks that follow your fretboard's radius. Just hold sandpaper under 'em. Likewise, there are cheapie wood blocks that allow you to easily crown the frets, same way (and you can make your own.) Ya don't need anything fancy to check your frets (like, the expensive tools from Och-Aye-Laddies, and I presume ya know who I mean.) A simple credit card or driver's license will work, fitting across three frets. If it "rocks," you've got a high spot. It's understood that if ya buy a hundred-dollar Ebay kit, all you're really getting is the wood, the rest is junk. And even some of the more expensive "kit guitars" can have holes that wander all over the place, and crummy inletting that may or may not work. Personal recommendation: start from scratch and get the parts ya want from GFS. Guitar Fetish is a source I've so far found to be trustworthy, and with excellent service, and no, I don't work for 'em. Some cheapie pickups are actually really damn good, that includes the "pre-wired" thirty-dollar specials from both GFS and Dragonfire. It's a roll of the dice, however, and in any case, no matter which way ya go, plan to drop around $300 on your build. Yes, you can go out and buy a used or off-brand for that amount (see Xaviere guitars on the GFS site) so, why build? Because it's fun, because you'll learn a lot, and because in the end you'll have the parts YOU want. (By the way, for those of us who can't solder fer shit, GFS offers plug-in wiring harnesses that go along with their wide variety of pickups. Others do this as well, but these are the ones I know about.)

Guns and Guitars, Please listen up young man! I'm 56 and been playing a very long time and multi-bands,,now just record. I live here in Central Florida where we have a slew of varied pawn shops that are flooded with guitars and all types of musical electronics. I purchased a Beautiful Godin XTSA for 400. bought the Roland GR55 and it's heaven. The reason I mention all this is you have a gift. That guitar you showed in this video I would like to purchase it from you, or one just like it. You show here your skills and technique with honesty and straight up zest that the techs I have known and used over the last 10 years cannot compare. I purchase old Kramers, BC RIch, Strats, all in need of some tlc that you would blast right through and resell. I am a fan of the active electronics that you put into this guitar, I use to have a BC RIch Eagle that I sold (like a complete idiot) that had the full active electronics.....Please I would like to hear from you and maybe discuss some options. Thank You! Jim B.

A few important notes, best to use masking tape all over the neck (twice between frets) because the fret flakes with sharpie can get on your hands and dirty the neck. Also, be sure to remove the nut before levelling. Third, use some light underneath the fretboard to see if the neck is straight. Where the neck meets the body the truss rod has less of an effect so that area should remain absolutely flat (No light visible). A few slight gaps before that towards the neck is acceptable as no neck is truly 100% straight. If you’re unsure if the neck is straight, sharpie the middle frets and run the levelling beam along the middle. If you’re hitting most of the frets then you are “straight”. If the neck isn’t straight, you might shave all the frets down too low to crown :-( Fourth, once you remove all the sharpie marks - sharpie again! You’ll be surprised the areas that weren’t level! Also do not push down hard, this is something I need to remember as some longer projects get me frustrated, and as a result - warps the neck!! Bad bad mistake that ruins necks!! Also, a medium three corner triangular file and fret end file I believe are musts for a good job. Those are fairly inexpensive and easy to master. Be sure to level once more real fast after crowning just in case you crowned over an area where the string path crosses. Also before removing the masking tape, sand with some 1500, 2000, 3000, 5000, 7000 sand paper and bends will be ridiculously smooth and the frets will have a nice mirror polish. If you still see lines on the frets, bends will feel fairly gritty.

Thanks for an informative and at times hilarious video. Definitely useful for people on a budget.
Yet there's one thing I am sceptical of: your appreciation of 'body wood' and its ability to 'breathe'. I dare you to pass a double-blind test on this.
I really don't believe guitarists are at all able to notice a difference in 'body wood' or 'tone wood' in the sound of their electric axes; let alone the presumed 'effect' of any guitar finish (stain or lacquer). Specially not if their musical preference is to shred away. I don't believe that ash, or alder over basswood, or the reverse, would yield an increase in sustain or tone quality that is noticeable to most guitar player's ears.
But hey, I reckon that just my opinion won't convince you (or any other YT reader). That's how it is. Only a double-blind test, conducted by people you trust, would convince you, right? So that may be an interesting idea for a subsequent video.
    Cheers from Amsterdam,
    MC

I agree with Michel Couzijn, if there's a difference in tone from body wood, it's barely remarkable. But I disagree with Jarry Dee - the wood on the fret DOES make a remarkable difference. All maple necks I've played sound brighter than rosewood. I believe that's the wood that makes the most difference in tone.

I would be hardpressed to buy decent hardware for say between 50 and 100 dollars.
I looked at the prices for three single coil pickups and frankly I couldn't buy them for a100 dollars and certainly not for 50.
But let's assume for arguments sake that you can offer a diy guitar with all the hardware replaced by better items for something like 150 dollar.
Then your profit in this project was 250 dollars. For that you had to have tools, oil, a working place, heating etc. and your own labor. I would say that given all these expenses you can not devote more than 4 hours to construction.
Since an hour labor of a skilled worker will set you back something like 50 dollars. Try hiring a plumber (a guess on my part but the price for one hour of a skilled worker is considerably higher here so I think that's an educated guess for the U.S.)
You make it sound like you earned money for nothing' but I think that's an underestimation of the costs. Even if the budget you say you worked with is not underestimated.
      Just saying.
Now this may be a hobby for you. So you may feel like they gave you money for something you like doing.
Still I don't think these upgraded diy guitars are such a steal.
I could for example pick up a stratocaster that's not half bad for considerably less than 400 dollars any day of the week.

I live in Belgium and had no problem building something similar. You just gotta look in the right places. Also, if you earn money doing something you don't like, I feel very sad for you.

No need. I earn a lot of money doing something I do like.
Much more rewarding that building El Cheapo guitars.
If you have to build these kinds of quitars to generate money I grieve for you.
Look in the right places? Aliexpress doesn't carry the illegal stuff anymore.
      Mais sans blagues.
I can build something similar. No doubt.
Question is at what cost. And what kind of money would it generate if I sold it.
My guess is that our friend over-exaggerated the profitability.

Crabcore1 No I don’t. But seriously, I was being polite and showing tremendous self restrain in the face of all sorts of bullshit. Just saying.

I wasn't expecting much of a take away from this video. (I built a Strat -a-like from a 1982 Ibanez Roadstar from 1986-1990) However, I was pleasantly mistaken. The tung oil was a great idea and the idea of how to sand down the frets will come in handy for an acoustic Washburn I have. In comparison to my Iby project, I laid a coat of paint over the body and a clear polymer finish over the neck. In spite of it, it turned out well and, like you said re: the pickups, I dropped in Seymour Duncans in an SSH configuration using stacked humbuckers in the SS spots. Great sound, there alone and with a coil tap on the true bucker accompanied with independent on/off switches to each pup, this axe will do it all!!
Again, great video and thanks for posting it!! :-)

+Ron Delio dude that build sounds awesome! Do you have a pic? If so post it on my Facebook, I’d like to see it!

Sorry, I don't do FB, and no pics. But to give you details, my project axe has:
      1/18 ratio Grover tuners
      Schaller 1st generation tremolo
custom cut w/b/w pick guard (I used a drill and an 'A' string to cut it out - except for the pup holes.)
Custom body curve on the solid alder body
      Pups: Seymour Duncan SH-4 Bridge
Seymour Duncan STK-4 Center and Neck
Each stack pup was originally wired with a DPDT switch with in phase, out phase, and coil tap
Bridge pup was wired with a coil tap. I have since rewired it for full pup on the neck and center and the coil tap still reigns on the bucker.
It only has 2 pots - both volume - 1 for the the stack pups and 1 for the bucker. I changed it from a volume and tone when I realized I used the tone about 2% of the time. I took the DPDT switches out of the circuit since it gave me like 28 different configurations. (Too much variation for an everyday player. Besides, who wants to blow 4 seconds in the middle of a song to make certain changes?! I went to the KISS system and it works really well!!!) Paint color is a medium royal blue metallic.
It plays really well and the Iby neck was good to start with, so outside of a fresh coat of varnish, it is a fine strat-like rocker, jazz, country, and pop player!!

I'd love to see a non- sped-up video of how you wired those pickups.

This was a fantastic video but god the 'humor' is pretty awful, i dont mean to be mean but its really not the strong suit of this type of video, i also think the step by step instruction style doesnt work well either, or atleast numbering the steps. i feel it breaks up the video and makes it feel choppy, and infact same with the 'humor' it hurts the pacing and doesnt really fit the tone of the rest of the video. Sorry if i sounded rude, i dont mean to be, but i do see alot of potential in this channel and whanted to give what limited knowledge i had.

I really like your content. You provide a great resource for someone like me who is interested in learning how to build and work on guitars. Your approach is informative without being too technical, or elitist. Thanks for the videos!
