True, but typical. Not really anything particular to him, he just associated with it because he has poorer PR than others who are the same but more savvy.

It's not paranoia if they're really out to get you. Nixon had tons of enemies. He knew exactly who they were, his perceptions were accurate.

How so? You mean in terms of him thinking he could get away with Watergate and remain president, or something else?

Born privileged? Nixon grew up in a tiny, prefab house that his Dad put together from a mail-order catalogue. He had to get up at 4:00AM every morning before school to buy produce for his family's little country grocery store/gas station. He had to refuse a tuition scholarship to Harvard because he couldn't afford the living expenses. Open a book--Nixon's childhood was one of constant struggle and hard work (not to mention the tragedy of his brothers' early deaths). He was hardly "privileged."

Thank you for pointing this out. Nixon takes a lot of crap, and a lot of it is well deserved, but peoples general opinion of him is based on ignorance. Dude came from nothing, made himself in the most powerful man in the world, briefly made the world a better place, and then Blew hoping to have a stupid decision on his part, and then when he realized there was no way to fix the situation, he left. Taken as a whole it's a pretty impressive story. Most people only know one chapter of that story, and I don't care enough to find out about the rest. So thank you for taking the time to explain.

I love the story of President Jimmy Carter going over to greet Former President Nixon when he came to the whitehouse for a funeral (I believe it was a funeral) and Nixon was sitting alone, and JC went over and greeted him a big smile and said with genuine care "Welcome home". President Nixon was someone the press hated, and not always for good reason. Jimmy Carter is probably the one of the most decent human beings to serve as President, even if I didn't too much agree with him on most things.

It was very confusing as a teenager during his presidency. I would get home from school and the Watergate hearings were live on TV. We were still in shock from the Vietnam experience. The social revolution was becoming ingrained into our lives. But I still don't think that era was anywhere near as insane as our present era.

It caused our present era. It is just as insane because it desired for our present era to happen. The revolutions of that time preyed on the generation that knew only of values and not of why they mattered. The destruction of moral society was their goal. Nixon's elections were indicative of a conservative revival, their downfall. However, they still controlled all meaningful levers of power, most importantly the information coming out of those addicting television screens. So, they won, and here we are now, living in the dystopia they have craved for at least 60 years

Coming from somebody who lived through the 60's and 70's, that's really insightful. And dowright terrifying, of course. But it's nice to hear from somebody who experienced it all first hand. I think back to when Dubya was in office. How horrible people thought things were then. How horrible a president they thought he was. How people all thought he was some ignorant, privileged bumpkin from Texas who could barely speak proper English. And then along comes Trump. Suddenly, Dubya isn't looking so bad anymore.
Also I remember when people made a big deal about Trump's whole "grab em by the pussy" remark. Meanwhile nobody seems to have cared that LBJ repeatedly exposed himself to people at random and even pissed on an aide for no good reason. Being that you were alive at that time, maybe you can speak as to whether people at the time knew or even cared. But I guess even if they did know, society was a lot more tolerant towards sexual abuse/harassment and probably wouldn't have thought anything of it. But that's just speculation.

Actually, Nixon was a pretty poor actor. It's very easy to see through him when he really was acting. To answer your question: Nixon legitimately speaks like this. If you listen to enough (and I mean hundreds of hours not just a few minutes of excerpts from the news) to his secret White House tapes, you will see he really did periodically speak like this in private to his aides and friends. This attitude toward hard work and a sense of purpose was one of his most deeply ingrained beliefs.

Oladman's response suggests he himself lives in a fantasyland where "good" and "bad" can adequately characterize a politician's legacy. Doing so conveniently sidesteps that -- first and foremost -- the biological prerequisite to political success necessitates a behavioral disorder to control the destinies of mass populations (which is what is recognized as successful leadership; by far most humans fail at grand-scale leadership simply because most don't exhibit such disorders). At this, Nixon was the consummate politician -- arguably the most brilliant following WWII to date.

I agree partially with Nixon here. When you are younger, it is very important to have goals in your life that you want to accomplish. As well as, the motivation to work toward those goals. However, if you have largely achieved those goals (especially as you are nearing or at retirement), there is nothing wrong with relaxing, having fun and generally enjoying the fruits of your labor. At that point, you have truly earned it. That does not mean you should stop being intellectual, but rather do the things that you always wanted to do (your bucket list). T
One contrary example: Thomas J. Watson Senior, the man who built IBM into a powerhouse (and introduced the famous corporate motto: "Think") worked well past his retirement age. When he finally did retire, he remarked that he wished he had done it much earlier. Unfortunately, he only got to enjoy his retirement for less than two months before he died.

That a poor factory worker who spent their whole life striving to better themselves (even if they fail to) can die more happy and content than a person who lived their entire life in comfort, dithering around and making no attempt to accomplish anything of value. The value of life is in purpose and struggle, not wealth and comfort.

This is not a speech. It is a response to an interview questions. He is not saying it is better to be poor than to be rich. He is saying that it is better to actively pursue a goal. He is speaking of his own meaningless existence after no longer being president and after having lost the opportunity to affect the changes he wanted. Also, Nixon reformed social programs, which a glorifier of poverty would not do, and indicates awareness of the difficulties of the poor and downtrodden.

The rest are left making someone else rich at something that has little meaning to them....just chasing the dollar in order to survive.

Read Evan Thomas's 'Being Nixon.' He really could have been a great and noble man but for his character flaw- a deep resentment of the Ivy League elites who looked down on him because of his humble beginnings. He worked fanatically hard and ascended to the highest office despite being very shy and awkward. This soundbite recalls his farewell to the White House staff. I ran with the haters back in the day but my respect grows as time goes by.

Watergate is similar to snatching a packet of gum.from the store today. Nixon handled foreign policy very well.
He would not have allowed Nato to expand beyond the borders of Germany. Nixon was a peacemaker. Presidents who came after him can learn much from him about foreign policy. Reagan was excellent like Nixon. After Reagan it is downhill for America.
