Dwight D. Eisenhower (R) vs. Adlai Stevenson (D)
The year 1952 ushered in the TV election ad wars, fighting to win the hearts and minds of Americans. With music by Irving Berlin, the highly likeable “I Like Ike" was produced by Walt Disney’s brother Roy at the Disney Studios.
Studies show that when it comes to political advertising, we feel first and think later. So the most impactful campaign ads aim for our hearts-fear, anger, hope and pride-and they run the gamut from stirring to downright dirty. I Approve This Message, an exhibition about the emotional impact of political advertising in a landscape altered by the internet, was scheduled to open at the New-York Historical Society in September 2020. The COVID-19 lockdown halted those plans, but we want to share a few of the exhibition’s ads, particularly as we head towards election day on Nov. 3, 2020.

Good one
If UA-cam was a thing in the 50s:
Exactly because the L is for people who don’t become president
I love how the worst thing they said about Eisenhower’s opposite was “let Adlai go the other way”.
Absolutely brutal
It’s gonna be nothing compared to what we’re gonna get with ai eventually, probably in the next election or 2.
@@RipplyAnemone67 Political ads already suck. How is AI supposed to change that?
@@nuclearpotato4073 Could actually be pretty funny at first. People tend to jump the gun with what AI is ready for, so I could see some rather hilarious screw ups if they trust AI too fast. For an example of how it can go disastrously wrong in other fields, look at the Roborace self driving car.
Not that we can't probably pull it off eventually, but people get way over excited thinking this stuff is a lot closer than it is and push it through before it is ready.
Adlai Stevenson was a damn good man and would've made a damn good President. However, He & Eisenhower STILL DIDN'T TAKE THE OTHER GUY PERSONALLY and sincerely believed in accomplishing things that helped The Working Man & Woman !
Wow. The jingle is perfectly engineered to get stuck in your head for days.
Might've contributed to his success in the polls.
Yeah, it certainly worked for me 70 years later.
So good.
if i was on the fence about ike before watching this it'd make me fucking hate him lol
Exactly
No way he can lose with such a bop
A meme before the internet
I miss the days when political ads were like this instead of massive smear campaigns against their opponents
Also creative and fun.
Ads like these are so much fun to watch. I wasn't born until the late 1970s. I would love to see political ads like this these days.
They did both lol

You know you’re in for something good when the candidate’s name starts bouncing at the start 😂
"I Like Ike" vs "Whatever Adlai Was Doing"
I Like Ike was way better since they hired some Disney people to the song and animation
Also, what a 1950s Roast: 0:35
"Adlai go the other way"
So that’s why the elephant looks so much like one of the ones from Jungle Book

I love how the whole point is just "yeah, literally everybody ikes this guy. We know you were gonna vote for him anyways."
I remember finding I like Ike pins in my grandmas drawer in her bedroom and had no clue what that meant.
😂😂😂😂 Now you know lol
@@maduzor1053 Yeah, at that age my mind was thinking it meant something dirty that I didn't get. 😂😂
@@ebogar42 oh really😂😂😂 Don’t worry. Grandma was a nice respectable lady😂😂😂
**Ike intensifies**
We need more ads like this--simple, catchy, and doesn't spend the whole time pointing at the other guy :)
This was one of the first TV political ads. The medium itself was the message. (Kind of like Trump's Twitter, just, a whole lot more innocent). Since TV is a mature medium, and people are getting exhausted with modern telecommunications anyway, this would not work today. You'd get laughed at.
That doesn't mean that every ad needs to be about how this could be the last election you'll ever get to have (even when it's true...). I like what RFK Jr is doing, I just think it's a bit premature. Maybe if he runs again in 28 he'll win. Just whatever we do, we can't let this be our last election. (Vote blue. I'm tired of them too, hopefully this is the last time we have to).
(A message about how modern they were, that is)
Ike could have been either Republican or Democrat just fine, running as a Republican just made sense strategically in '52 since the Democratic party had been in power for 20 straight years at that point and Truman left office incredibly unpopular. Still governed in a mostly New Deal fashion, too.
I mean, not really? None of what you said was wrong, but Ike was the guy who ended World War 2 in most peoples minds back then. The popularity of the current president also wouldn’t have mattered because he had spoken out against Truman before, so he was already distanced from his presidency. It would’ve also been a major boost to be honest. The man who won us the war running for the party that ended the Nazis, that’s a pretty powerful image of you ask me.
Nah, Ike was strong on protecting the border and vigorously fought the military industrial complex. Ike was no democrat.
@@Gryphind0r yes he could've. This might come as a shock to you, but politics were quite a bit different 70 years ago.
Ike was a military strategist first and foremost. In an ideal world, he would have run as an Independent.
@@olefredrikskjegstad5972 Eisenhower was a moderate Republican, but he wasn't really a liberal, more bridging the gap between the two factions in the GOP at the time. Even though the liberal Democrats, (led by FDRs son) sought to make a Democrat out of Eisenhower, because he was popular and his politics where unknown, trying to get him to run in the primary against Truman, he refused. He could have been a Democrat, if he was one, but he wasn't.

I'm trying to remember back if I have I ever heard this song before. I heard it, I'm just not sure if I heard it in the 1950s or not. I was kind of young then.

@@johnbowen2956 yes

@@adamik2271 If you truly believe that Eisenhower was more competent as President than either Washington or Lincoln, I am stunned and can say nothing.
You equate Eisenhower's administration with Washington's which significantly help establish the notion of republicanism in the United States. And you equate Eisenhower's administration with Lincoln's administration which firmly suppressed a rebellion whose primary goal was the defense of slavery.
Right. Eisenhower was ever so much more competent than either Washington or Lincoln.
I remember this commercial. I was only 1 1/2 years old and did not know who Ike was.

Can we discuss how "Ike" isn't short for Dwight at all
It was his nickname
It was actually a short for Eisenhower , as other members of his family were also nicknamed Ike
I wish political ads were still like this, all we see now is both candidates lying about each other and acting like babies.
Yeah, instead of having ads for presidents usually stating relative truth, I like ads with absolutely nothing informative at all. Just a catchy jingle repeating "I like Ike, Ike for president" like a broken record. haha

God, imagine watching this for any recent candidate. They'd be laughed off the stage. Imagine if we lived in a world where a presidential candidate was actually liked by a large majority of Americans.
Today we have two major candidates one of which is liked by about one half of the country and other one despised by the vast majority yet still gets the other half of the vote because he's not the other guy 😂
Recently world politics is getting more polarized, for example in Brazil 50% like Bolsonaro and 50% like Lula, and in the US, 50% like Trump and 50% like Biden
