i'm playing this in june at carnegie and i listen to this everyday. see if i can't try to sound more like david mcgill. something about the way he sounds in this just sounds right to me.
The Lulu suite is one of the most tragic and exquisite pieces, and has been a real comfort to me in times of great pain. The Lulu opera, which I refuse to listen to, is grotesque-maybe that is why it took him so long to complete it as he kept putting it off. Boulez and the orchestra are superb-it is not easy to deliver the greatness of the suite.
I would give it a spin, though. It remains my favourite 20th century opera, with apologies to Debussy and Britten. It is no more grotesque than Hitchcock, and a painfully prescient piece, musically and dramatically.
some conductors don't do it because it's the longest of the 5 and it doesn't have sung parts, so sometimes it's omitted. even though I think it's as great as the other pieces from the suite. but you know, writing programs for a concert isn't easy, and having a 35 minutes piece like the lulu symphony could be difficult...
THANK YOU FOR SHARING ITMARVELOUS CONCERT.,

Most singers felt they could hide behind strict intonation when singing atonal works - tragic!
