    I feel like the original timeline for this was super crazy from the start.. like someone went "yo Dave, how long do you think it takes to revive a film plant that's completely screwed?" (seriously, look up the pictures - those machines were dead dead) - "I dunno, like 6 months?" - "it's in Italy tho" - "okay, better add a month of buffer."
    All that being said, fully agree with you: really glad they are actually making film and have two rolls in my fridge I am excited to shoot!

    • @atticdarkroom
      @atticdarkroom  2 роки тому +6

      Yeah, maybe if they didn't have to move everything and if they could've just dusted off the machines and restarted it might've worked. But with hindsight we know it was not enough time.

    I was also disappointed a bit when the slide film fell through but at some point I just accepted it. They did revive the old factory, as someone mentioned here but the test lab. The original factory was way too big, like a football field two or three stores high. Like a factory that produces newspaper paper where the machinery runs day and night. Anyway, I'm happy to have P30 and orto 50, P30 also in 120 so it's a good outcome for me.

    I am hopeful to see more color negative and slide films released.
    I still can't wait for FuguFilm 400. They said barring anything crazy, they planned on a release sometime this year, and considering there's not much time left in the year I hope to see it get a release soon. It'll be nice to shoot some fresh 400 speed color slide film over the holidays. Hopefully by then I'm developing it myself.

    Not only is the new canister better, but the edge markings are extremely nice. Hopefully continuous production means they can add 120 into the mix, and that can lead us to the color phase at long last. I definitely think it's in reach, though not with any quick turnaround. I get mad at people who treat Kickstarters like a web store, though it was definitely a case study in wishful thinking (but not nearly as bad as the Reflex thing). At least P30 is a straight up unique and very nice film in the meantime.

      There is information in the red channels, but they were a bit underexposed, roughly 1-2 stops. I was surprised because it's sold as a panchro film, but I guess panchro doesn't mean full sensitivity across the range, just that it has some sensitivity.

      I would hope they’d do at least a different ASA in the end because unless it somehow looks better than 7294, it being 100D won’t offer anything new that we don’t already have, unless it’s also cheaper.
      I imagine if they were to choose between higher or lower ASA, it’d probably be higher but with that you get more grain. A lower ASA like even just 80 or 64 would mean slightly finer grain, so better for projection.

    I love this film when I can get my hands on it. A personal favourite. I love the contrast and smoothness when taking photos of buildings, and it also picks up colours beyond human vision; as when I did portraits of a friend that came out with freckles all over her face and skin that are not visible to the naked eye. P30 may be hard to get hold of, but it is just fantastic to shoot. He is right in it not being the most flexible film, but if you want that shoot HP5; P30 has a specific look and butter smooth grain and I wouldn't have it any other way.

    So I may be mixing apples with grapes here, but here goes. I use Adox Scala 50 regularly, and love it. I recently got my hands on 3 rolls of Ferrania P30, this is of course a re-modulation of the original P30 formula used in Italian Cinema in the 50’s and 60’s, with similar characteristics as the Adox Scala 50 - similar box speeds 50 vs 80, similar high silver content, similar clear film base. The difference sits in the way each is developed, one is a slide reversal film, the other a negative B&W film. Yet Ferrania P30 the motion picture film stock produced back in the day was also a slide reversal film, as the films seen on the big screen attest. So my question is simple, do you think I’d be able to produce reversal slides using Ferrania P30 film with the Adox reversal slide film process?

    • @atticdarkroom
      @atticdarkroom  2 роки тому

      I don't see why it wouldn't work. Although one thing is P30 has a light grey base.

    P30 is a good freezer film. After shooting a few rolls of it, I find the freezer is the best place for it.
    I support Ferrania's mission 100% but I can't stand that film. I've taken maybe a handful of shots out of the 3 or 4 rolls I shot that I liked but most were way too contrasty to be usable.

    It's quite a fun film. I find you can pull a lot of detail out when scanning. Much less so when printing. I tried to tame the contrast by pulling but last time I attempted that I didn't have good results. I'm planning on buying more and souping it in 510-Pyro and doing actual H&D curves to see if I can sort out the mystery. I noticed you shot some color charts - how was the red response? I hear that it leans ortho-panchromatic and that it doesn't :) I myself have experienced it where it seems like it sees less red, but only sometimes?

    • @atticdarkroom

    Having shot this stuff I would say that it's nowhere near an 80 ISO film, the contrast to me suggests it's more like 32 if you're feeling charitable and the suggested times are if anything a one stop push.
    Don't have any more of it to test with a step-chart and actually find out the specific range it has (and I would usually do that on sheet film anyway) but I would say unless you like the hyper-contrast look you might want to 'pull' the stuff to actually have some mid-tones.
    That said I'd love to have it in the form it was originally invented and shoot it as 16mm film...
