My mistake, too. I had always tried tp sound so or so (not only by singing), and just recently I've realized that I should just let the voice go. Now I see Justin confirm that.

It could be you are using air from the upper part of your lungs instead of letting a small stream of air come from the lower area. It also has to do with where the air is being placed once it moves over the cords, how the internal chamber is positioned. And in reality, some people have softer voices than others, but it can be improved with proper training. Do you have a vocal coach now?

RCuteR hmm I always wondered whether it was my deep voice that was causing my voice to sound weak but I guess this problem can happen to anyone since you suffer from it too.

This was actually a super helpful one - For new singers the idea of the "pretty" voice idea being a cause for the breathiness is really spot on; now I'm practising non-breathy singing. Thanks!

Justin, your videos are amazing! I m a singer and a voice teacher myself and i agree 100% with your approach and teachings. i love your analysis , these are very very similar with what i m doing with my students in class. Many times i reference your videos to them and we find them very helpful! I especially loved this one( an issue i deal with many times) the belting one (hey jude) the riffing(pentatonic scale) and the vibrato. Many thanks and keep up the great work!

Thank you for all the work you put into these videos! I had a hard time really feeling confident about singing because it was weak and I felt very limited in range. After going through the "Hey There" exercise I tried singing a song that has always been difficult for me to feel comfortable singing and it worked! I had to put a bit more effort into it, but it worked nevertheless. I'm sure with practice it'll be more natural.

I think this video has clarified or helped me understand my speaking voice. When i speak people don't understand. They tell me i speak very low. Even when i think i am loud they don't hear me properly. While singing i had the same problem of breathiness.
The three points mentioned here hit right to the point and i am gonna try working on these points. Thanks Justin.

Great perspectives. Thanks to this video, I've now come to think of singing as "speaking on pitch" and filling in the spaces with sustained vowels. For me this makes singing simpler. I find that when I come to a trouble spot in a song I can work through it if I just "speak a few words on pitch" rather than "singing" them. But beyond that, I was surprised to find that thinking of it this way also makes the singing much more expressive. The emotion just comes natural in speech.

Justin thank you sooooo much for sharing you knowledge and talent and teaching skills with us. I have learned in these 7 episodes, more than in taking private singing lessons for over a year. I'm looking forward to enjoying all the future episodes that you have generously offered to us.Question: Is there a preferred "set" progression in learning to sing? i.e. it's preferable to learn "A" before "B" etc.? Many thanks again.

This and the tone deaf video really makes me feel better. I knew when I as off pitch but I didn't know how to get on pitch so I thought I was tone deaf. On top of that I always thought "but my singing voice is ugly" so I tried to make it prettier. This only made me think I couldn't sing. I'm going to try singing at home till I can get confident enough for lessons.
