  • Pirates of Speelunker Cave is a re-imagining of one of the park’s first attractions, The Cave, that operated from 1964 until 1991 and replaces the current version of the attraction-Yosemite Sam and the Gold River Adventure. The Cave featured original characters called Speelunkers that were created exclusively for Six Flags Over Texas. The new ride features projection and immersive sets, custom soundtrack, sixty-four Speelunkers and no height requirement with an accompanying adult.

The Box in the line you showed with the little holes in it was the old box for The Yosemite Sam ride that had "Taz" in it. Screaming and spinning. Was my favorite part of the line as a kid.

The best thing I remembered about the Speelunkers Cave was the air conditioned relief from the ridiculously cruel Texas heat. It was my favorite ride even more than the Shock Wave and that wooden roller coaster they designed around 1990.

I grew up riding The Cave in the mid 1960s - I was about 5 or 6 my first time. The Speelunkers haunted my dreams, but never terrified me. It was just a weird, quirky ride that made no sense but appealed to the imagination like few other rides did to me as a kid. I rode it several more times over the years, before it was closed and the Looney Tunes disappointingly took over. As this ride-through video started, my heart sank at the beginning - I was thinking oh no, this is going to be a rip-off of Pirates of the Caribbean...but by the time we're bubbling underwater with sea monsters and mermaids, I realized this was going to be something completely different. I am immensely pleased to see that the designers of this reboot ride obviously loved the old Cave ride and wanted to recapture the weird, quirky feel of the original while adding some new technology and some (literal) sparkle! Kudos to them and to Six Flags Over Texas for giving their customers something outside of the ordinary - long live the Speelunkers again!

What a weird merge of two different themes!
My brother & I visited SFOT in 1988 on an extremely hot day, so we rode the original Spelunker Cave multiple times because it was the best way to cool off.
I went back to SFOT in the early ‘90s with a friend and even though I grew up on and love the Looney Tunes characters I hated to see the unique Spelunker Cave replaced. We still rode it, of course, but it just wasn’t the same.
Now I’ve got to plan a trip to SFOT for a reunion with my old friends the Spelunkers!

I rode on the Speelunker cave and I loved it! Love the aesthetic of it and the moment I've entered the cave with the Crystals and the creatures. It smelled so good. It smelled like a candy scent to me. I am genuinely curious of what that scent is because it's addicting to me.

How is it that Speelunker fans get the cooler revival than us Knott's Bear-y Tales fans? This is everything I wanted from Knott's Bear-y Tales and more; From the animatronics to full sets to use of screens in the right spots. God the Pirates of Speelunker's Cave looks like a load of fun!
That and I love the kooky turn of tone the ride takes once you move past the Pirate scenes. A fantastic way to re-introduce the classic characters in the park!

I haven't ridden it yet. But I was so looking forward to it. After watching this, unfortunately it's not really much of a throwback to the original Cave ride. Plenty of speelunkers near the end, and hardly any of them are animated. And what's up with the cheesy kiddie music? The sound effects of the original Cave ride were so freakin' cool. Very atmospheric and made you feel like you were in some other world. Oh well...at least Six Flags did something with it. Still going to ride it, and I'm sure it will be enjoyable. But it's not quite as cool as I had hoped it would be.

I had high hopes for this attraction, but it leaves a LOT to be desired, sadly. It looks like they were operating on a very low budget here. It makes sense in some ways, I guess, since they’re not Disney, but you look at other rides like Monster Mansion and compare it to this and it just doesn’t hold up IMO. I don’t feel like this does the original justice, although that’s not worth much coming from me considering I never rode the original and only know what I’ve seen online, I suppose.

  • @GuruChaz

For all the awesome work they put into renewing this ride, I was not impressed with the storyboard or all the non-animated Speelunkers. What I mean is....you start off with this awesome video of the main villain and by the time the ride is over, you don't know what happened to the main villain. It's one of his henchman that takes over his spot in the story somehow. Also, there's just too many stationary items. It's like it was kind of haphazardly thrown together with flourescent lighting. The storyboard is just convoluted.

I didn’t think the story was too bad, but I agree with you on the lifeless speelunkers and animatronics at the end. The first part of the ride was great but the ending was kind of corny. Yes,but you have to take into consideration the fact that special effects and materials used today as opposed to back in the 1964 was A LOT different. Same with Star Wars- I, II, and III are far superior in CGI and props (being made in ‘99, ‘02, and ‘05) than the “originals” IV, V, VI made in the ‘77, ‘80, and ‘83. It was just the time period.
