What if the Drug War Never Occurred?

  • The War on Drugs has consumed a much larger part of our society then many think.
For decades the US has attempted to combat the sale and use of drugs at home and abroad. Now with greater pressure to legalize marijuana and take profits away from cartels, we ask what would it be like had the War never occurred? Here is one scenario.

As a disabled vet i seen a new horrible position our vets face today, many men i have seen come home with legs arms and debilitating injuries only to be put on lots of "medication" to cope with the limited mobility, pain etc.. During the "crackdown" on prescription drugs i walked in after many years of having the same prescription only to find out my doctor wont prescribe any medication because he in under investigation..After a day of unimaginable pain and suffering i had to purchase the same medication threw "street" sources.. The war on drugs is now affecting wheelchair bound disabled people that NEED medication... Do i deserve to go to prison because i chose to give up my health for America? What a incredibly unfair and unjust this world is...

Thank you for your service and godspeed man. No one should risk their life for their country and then be forced to live in excruciating pain all while being beaten by the police forces who took all the equipment and strategies you learned as a veteran and then having them used against you. I can't even imagine how that would affect veterans with PTSD. I feel like many would feel like they're in a war zone again and would likely be shot down.
Again, I hope you get better man. You deserve more.

Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, EXCEPT as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
The word except means today 20 years for a stealing an apple.... Pressing license plates... Example.
Ikea used prisons to manufacture products. You probably have something that was made by an ikea slave right now... And the civil war had NOTHING to do with slaves. No one cared, still dont, about them. The war was over states rights, as the north grew bigger and eventually the south had little say in government (like how the UK just Brexited the EU) the south tried and failed to Souxit the US) lol and to fuck they shit up, the slaves were freed ending the industries of the south

Ted Wojtasik we will have those no matter what. but if there was no war on drugs and maybe if they were even legal drugs would only be available in tightly regulated shops that would mean kids would have a much harder time getting them because said shops would only sell to adults with valid ID, drug overdoses would be drastically reduced and poisonings from other chemicals frequently added by current black market manufacturers due to lack of oversight would be eliminated because they would be laboratory analyzed so people would know exactly what was in the stuff, cartels would be much less powerful and violent because their sole customer would be the united States government who wouldn't pay nearly as much but would buy far more bulk so they would probably see it as worth behaving themselves somewhat... plus legitimate businesses don't need to kill rape and murder

The Adamant The Soviets would end up with an advantage over the US at the time, and could have used it to aquire more power during the war peace talks. They also might have dominated during the cold war.
What if the US hadn't used the bomb, though? That's what I'd like to see made into a video.
      For instance, my idea:
If the US(or anyone for that matter) hadn't used the bomb at all during the war, it might not have gotten the attention it did, and those who understood the power of nuclear weapons could continue to research and develop it in relative secret. Had this occurred, those with the most progress and desire for research on it, ie the US, could of had a lot more power than they do today. There might not even been a Cold War, as the US would have had a far greater advantage over The Soviet Union. Their wouldn't have been any contest. Being one of the very few only nations with advanced nuclear power would have rocketed the US's influence across the globe, and they could have even been in a position to control the research and development of nuclear weapons, making it difficult for other nations to catch up.
This is only one example and I'd like a video to be done with more depth. Would be interesting to watch, in my opinion.

You've always done a good job of staying within one scenario but now I'm think your hindering yourself by not speculating enough on what could have happened. Obviously changing a single event will cause a temporal butterfly effect but that's the fun of alternate history! Take a stance, speculate! That's why I loved your channel in the first place.

The only way you could say that the Germans failed in this scenario is that they've locked themselves into a long war of attrition with both the Soviets and large East European rebel groups (I believe it's stated or at least alluded to that rebel raids on cities in the east aren't uncommon occurrences) that is going to ultimately kick them in the ass. I wouldn't be surprised if US-Vietnam War levels of public unrest begin in Germany over the war before the 60s are over.

Maybe things like marijuana, since it does not affect or overdose, but certainly not opioids like cocaine or heroin. You can overdose those very easily.

Make it illegal, but don't make it illegal to posses. Instead, send them to clinics where if they are addicted to, say, heroin, they get deluxe heroin and clean needles to inject themselves with, and get showers, and counseling. That's what Switzerland did, and it worked very well.

That's false equivalency. You're comparing an act that violates the rights of another human being to an act that people like to do for fun in their spare time.
If the guy next door to you decides to murder someone, he has harmed another human being and he is a danger to other human beings. Arresting that person would benefit the community.
If the guy next door to you decides to take some drugs after he gets home from work, is he hurting anyone else? No. Is it any of your business? No. Would locking him up benefit the community in any way? Again, no.

Jake let me change my name Dagger back to normal In this case, even though their goal's would align with France's at that point in time, I like to think the US would never get involved directly in the war, similar to how they did in the real life WWII. They would, however, finance the French dictator instead of the German Kaiser (if there still is one). The only thing that would make them stop is Japan's invasion, and assuming France and Japan are allies in this scenario, it would probably make them stop permanently. The Germans wouldn't be supplied by anyone, but they would have a strong ally to their east, making an invasion from Russia difficult. As for Britain's involvement, idk, I'd assume that they would just wanna stay out of the war all together and since there is little actual land for the French to annex, how a war could break out, I don't know.

    • @Marius2Rocker
      @Marius2Rocker 9 років тому

b3nzay As for Great Britain, unless there was, say, a communist revolution in France as the results of the lost war, I assume they would still honor the Entente Alliance in the event of a French aggressive war against Germany (unless it is clear that the Entente is a purely defensive alliance. I haven't actually read the treaty... xD).

Good stuff, but there's one glaring error: the war on drugs didn't start with any kind of health concern. Nixon literally chose to criminalize drugs to crack down on the Civil Rights and anti-war movements. He couldn't come out and call his opponents illegal, but he could criminalize drugs these groups were known to use now and then, then let the lopsided enforcement by the courts separate out respectable, rich, white people "just experimenting" from poor, black and/or subversive people as the real problem.

Did some drug interdiction consulting with the US Embassy in the Bahamas and can say first hand that they were not fully vested in the effort. They seemed more interested in the perks that came with their office than actually improving their operations. This very eye opening and I’ve been very dubious about the War on Drugs ever since. Given that the prison population is exploding and that private contractors are making a mint off of the prisoners it has become a booming industry to jail people repeatedly. The war on drugs is an unmitigated disaster.

Soldiers and rape victims with PTSD would be be able to get the MDMA therapy which could cure them.
Nobody would be dying from use of bath salts, synthetic cannabis, or bromo dragonfly. Why not? Because nobody would use those sub-standard imitations; they'd be using the much safer drugs which we, in our infinite wisdom, have made Schedule 1.

Yeah, now because of the classification of certain drugs, doctors can't even readily prescribe them. Only in very rare circumstances. I can give you an example of how bullshit drug classification screws people. My grandmother who's 98 years old, has degenerative disc disease, arthritis and the worst spine you've ever seen (her disks are basically, nothing, bone on bone) is prescribed Hydrocodone that she's been on for 20+ years, she gets 120 pills per month and needs every single bit of them and even then the pain is often so bad she stays in bed in an effort to not cause herself more pain. Recently Hydrocodone went from a Schedule 3 drug to a Schedule 2 drug, now having the same restrictions as the stronger Oxycodone and such. This means that she can't be prescribed any more than 120/month, so now she has to completely change medications in hopes of having more relief and she's so fucking scared that the new medication wont give her adequate relief, she'd rather suffer at the pain levels she's at now because at least she knows what it is and knows how bad it _can_ get. So now, instead of her simply having an extra pill to be able to take per day if she needs it, she has to completely switch to fucking 20 or 40mg pure hydrocodone or something like fucking oxycontin. Because I mean hell, the fucking morons have it all in the smae class now anyways right? This whole bullshit war on drugs and the effects it has on legitimate pain patients really pisses me off because I have to sit here and see a 98 year old frail old lady suffer even more than she needs to because of, bullshit.

So, A a single instance of social pressure could ruin your life B a quick discrete undetectable slip of drugs into someones food or drink that is legally sold can ruin them

Mexico's population is vastly more dense than in places like Afghanistan, and the Cartels fit into those dense populations as well as the Taliban does in less dense areas. Also, legalisation and decriminalisation are different. Drug addicts are suffering from a terrible affliction that causes them to destroy their own lives. Prison is a useless tactic to treat drug addiction...which is obvious to most...but drug users still get put in prison because society has to punish them to ease its collective conscience.

Cheesythumbs My point isnt about the drug itself(although if i really was im sure it'd be an interesting discussion) its more on the lines of the full legalization of the drug and what it would pretty much say. Allowing this particular drug to become fully recreational will pretty much say "if the majority of the country's demographics agree its ok to use then we should legalize the full use of it anywhere for any arbitrary reason just to please the masses". Weather or not weed actually is a harmful hallucinations or a medical marvel is irreverent at that point.

They give you drugs of high quality, and help you with the rehabilitation. The addicts can focus on getting a better life like that, instead of focussing on their financial problems with drugs.
Statistics show this is a very succesful way of countering the drug addictions, and for sure is a way better plan than the drug war.

The decline of the family in the black community was well on its way before the war on drugs. Sen. Moynihan was warning about that in the '60s. Granted the war on drugs contributed to that decline but to say that without it the inner city would be prosperous is to dismiss numerous other factors that went into play. For instance, I seriously doubt that the crack epidemic would have not occurred without the war on drugs.

Out of curiosity what were those factors because I think a lot of people miss those?

The growth of single parent households.
The rise of the Crips and the Bloods
The growth in popularity of the paradigm that says that not only are white people responsible for the injustices visited upon black people in the past but that all of our energies must be focused on that past and even the slightest bit of racism in evidence today rather than focusing on taking advantage of opportunities that currently exist
A culture that glorifies the worst aspects of inner city behavior (i.e. Thuggish behavior and hood hoes)
      Disregard for education
And on and on. Much of the dysfunction that are listed and those I have in mind but did not list predate the War on Drugs.

+John Williams Those were because of drugs. The gangs only got power because drug were illegal and black males were being overepresented since the 1930s because of over policing neighborhoods for drug use.

I think its in Amsterdam where there are signs all around that say something along the lines of
"You won't be arrested for any drugs you take, but we need to know what you took and how much so that we can save your life. You will not be arrested."
In the event of someone needed medical attention.
