Nothing has come remotely close to these ballads of the 80s.
Man I remember when this song first came out. They had just taken down the Berlin wall. What an emotional time for everybody. This song brings joy to my heart and tears to my eyes.

Wow, ignorance on my part. Amazing, waa born in 82' this was my first cassette single.
Anyone who grew up in the cold war understands this song and is hit hard by it. Even more so those who grew up in the crushing oppression of communism in eastern Europe. For one bright moment in time, finally, we had a little hope.
Only to be squandered as the communists infiltrated our schools and colleges, and filled three generations of people's (so far) heads full of communist bullshit and now we are staring it in the face right here. These kids have no idea.
It's ironic that a lot of Gen Zers today think that communist Europe was the best thing that has ever happened to the earth and that governments around the world should model themselves after the USSR.

The reason this song means so much to me...I grew up as an Army Brat. We lived in Germany from 1985-1988. My dad was always away in the field training for WW3. I was always worried he would be away when the Bomb finally dropped. I had so many nightmares as a kid of WW3 breaking out. I dreamt of walking around in the ruins of new york city after a nuke. I dreamed of Soviet tanks rolling down our streets. Our school had weekly drills on how to duck and cover under our desks. We always had fighter jets flying overhead. It was a constant feeling of anxiety and worry that today could be the day it would all end in a flash and great wind. I was elated to see the wall come down in 1989, I felt better, but I was still apprehensive. Then when this song played on t.v....it solidified the end for me. it showed me that many others shared the same worry I did. And even the people on the other side of the iron curtain didn't want a nuclear war either. I was 10 when this song came out. I remember trying to stay composed since it was so powerful. My big brother and I watched this video together, I cried a tear of relief and joy, but I hid it from my brother because I didn't him to think I was a sissy.
