- Welcome to the Melbourne underworld, where tensions are building between dangerous criminals and equally dangerous police. The Wild West played out on the city's streets.
Armed robber Pope Cody (BEN MENDELSOHN) is in hiding, on the run from a gang of renegade detectives who want him dead. His business partner and best friend, Barry 'Baz' Brown (JOEL EDGERTON), wants out of the game, recognizing that their days of old-school banditry are all but over. Pope's younger brother, the speed-addicted and volatile Craig Cody (SULLIVAN STAPLETON), is making a fortune in the illicit substances trade - the true cash cow of the modern criminal fraternity - while the youngest Cody brother, Darren (LUKE FORD), naively navigates his way through this criminal world - the only world his family has ever known.
And into this world arrives their nephew, Joshua 'J' Cody (JAMES FRECHEVILLE).
Following the death of his mother, J finds himself living with his estranged family, under the watchful eye of his doting grandmother, Smurf (JACKI WEAVER), mother to the Cody boys.
J quickly comes to believe that he is a player in this world. But, as he soon discovers, this world is far larger and more menacing than he could ever imagine.
When tensions between family and police reach a bloody peak, J finds himself at the center of a cold-blooded revenge plot that turns the family upside down, and which also threatens to ensnare innocent bystanders such as his girlfriend, Nicky (LAURA WHEELWRIGHT).
One senior cop, Nathan Leckie (GUY PEARCE), must lure J into the police fold and then shepherd him through a complex minefield of witness protection, corrupt cops, slippery lawyers and a paranoid and vengeful underworld.
J comes to realize that in order to survive he must determine how the game is played - he must somehow choose his place in this cunning and brutal animal kingdom. He must work out where he fits.

Probably one of the most underrated movies in history. Animal Kingdom is about as close to perfection as a movie can be. What a masterpiece.
Loved the film, but that's a really crappy trailer that doesn't represent the film well at all. But all the performances in the film were great. Jacki Weaver and Ben Mendelsohn especially. I live in Melbourne, and it captured the feel of the city well also.

I liked the movie. Saw it way back in 2012. When I first found out they we’re doing a show on TNT I thought it would be trash. But actually I love the show. But I’ve watched all 4 season 4 times already and season 5 just premiered last weekend and it’s fire already.
Didn't think they could go on after Smurf died. But they're killing it. Wondered if this movie was the inspiration for the show.

I finally watch this film last night. So glad that I never saw a trailer. Spectacular film with stupendous performances all around. On of those films what sticks with you after seeing it. Very powerful stuff.

Lucía MR Mota the proposition is a masterpiece. So underrated the year it came out. Haven't seen animal kingdom yet but the show on tnt is awesome. Great series.

This IS one of the finest Australian films of all time. If you don't understand it, you don't understand Australia, and you've never seen a film made outside of the USA. The opening credit sequence alone tells you more about Australian society than 99.99% of all other films made in this country. Michod, Watts, Arkapaw, Partos, I aspire to get close one day.

I saw the director of this film yesterday and Friday. David is one of the most nicest and approachable film people I have met. We chatted for about an hour at a film festival and just his personality is an opposite to the films he makes, he's just so warm and funny.

Fast forward to modern Australia. The overworked underwhelmed middle class, told redeeming folk tales of modern bushrangers, gangsters like Carl Williams, Chopper Read, The Moran Clan. The stunning success of the "Underbelly" serials - all reflections of the other great Aussie dream, when you can't earn it, nick it!
This film was great, I can say this is better than the show. And the show is GREAT. But the film just keeps you locked in and on your toes. The show goes in depth with character, but the film is so intense annnd amazing.
This film is totally badass. One of my favs.
I'm watching the show made from the movie on Bravo in Canada, only 2 episodes in and I'm hooked. Brilliant.

theres a good scene in the movie where the detective explains to the young kid in the family how the weak die and the strong survive in the animal kingdom, but the weak can also survive sometimes because they are being protected by the strong. ofc guy pearce is symbolically explaining to the boy that the strong are his insane family, and they WERE protecting him up until he chose to go to the police, so now hes the weak and is no longer protected by the strong, thus needs police protection.

The 'battler', the underdog, his back against the wall. The hard man in hard conditions. Aussie folk heroes stand against the traditional, 'British' law, the Bushrangers, 'The jolly Swagman', Ned Kelly.

These law breakers in this story were not standing up for their fellow Australians, against the injustices perpetrated by crooked cops within the law enforcement system. They were sheer criminal parasites preying on their fellow Aussies and anyonelse. Killing their prey outright and/or destroying families through drug trafficking which is tied in with sex trafficking, including children, and leads to all sorts of further white antining of the common social structure within our decent communities. This was a story about the corrupt and the decent on both sides of the law.
It's a crazy fucking world.
I'm going on a limb here and say this is one of the greatest films ever made!!!
Guy Pierce and Ben Mendehlson were awesome in this. Script unveils as it should lots of twists, keeps you guessing.

Try 'Snowtown'. True story. Grimace, get a strong drink and hang onto your socks though. Nasty nasty nasty story (I followed the actual trial - film is fairly close)

I watched this movie a few nights ago (Animal Kingdom) & I thought it sucked a waste of my GB's & money. I know it was based on a true story but from what I've read & saw about Ms.Kath & her boys I just didn't see much here at all. Not a movie I would ever recommend to anybody to watch.I was really disappointed especially when I saw all the GB's it used up.I have hughes net & they limit ur GB's every month & charge an outragous amount of money every month.I live in the country & was the only high speed internet I could get & dialup really sucks lol.

Great film, I think the family in this are similar to the Irish Moran family in Melbourne during that Gangland war between the 90’s and 00’s
Nothing like the Morans, they were the pettingill/allen/pearce family of Richmond in Melbourne back in the 1980's when the morans were still children. Victor Pearce did have at his funeral one Jason Moran in attendance however.
Its based on Kath Petingill, Victor Pierce and Dennis Allen and how
Nobidy see's it is beyond me.

Watching this film tonight in E4 I came here to see what people thought of it and I'm glad I did these comments have made me look forward to seeing it
In style this film is very 'European'. Reminds of Bruno Dumont, or Hanneke. It lets the pictures (not dialogue) tell the story, and the characters (not 'action') drive the plot. Unlike the majority of US made stuff that reaches our shores, nothing is rammed down our throat, no need to explain things 100 times in 100 ways. Nobody talks about their 'feelings', or what they'll do, you know and learn by watching them. Ned Kelly was made for foreign audiences. This was just made, and Aussies loved it

It's hard to watch Pope as such a ruthless fuck after seeing him in The Place Beyond The Pines. He's such a cool character in that film, but here he's a psycho. It's tough.

Exactly. That conversation with the detective (Guy Pearce) after he doesn't testify at the case, explains it perfectly well. He thinks Josh is weak at first, but after he betrays him at the case he realizes that the old "Alpha Lion" is weak, and now J is king of the Safari. Basically stating "I think I know your place", so the Detective knows that he's going to kill Pope and doesn't care (or does and can't do anything about it).
Though it's not as simple as him being an animal like his uncle, and as many of the worst crooks are. He's not like his Uncle, he got his uncle out of going to jail with the exact agenda of revenge for his girlfriend. Fucking amazing movie.
