  • Old electronic devices with electrolytic capacitors are often affected by capacitor leakage.
Here is a brief tutorial describing the process of replacing old, damaged capacitors in a Macintosh IIsi power supply.

Bruce, love this video…it has helped me get cpacitors off, and learn how to use solder sucker. I nearly took 1 transistor off by mistake and jump wire as I could not quite figure out where safe solder points fit it. This is the small capacitor between 2 big ones, where I nearly too jump wire off. All I can say is you inspired me to to invest in few tools to do my own soldering as hobby not full time. I have few board to recap. Color classic, LC, and Quadra 630. Next on my shopping list is ultrasonic cleaner not to expensive and 3D printer.
    Thank Bruce

I had a IIsi around 2016, bought from a thrift shop, everything worked except the sound and I don’t think any work had been done to it. It went to an e-cycler when I got some other stuff and didn’t have room for it all. A guy I worked with made a cable to go to a VGA monitor and it worked fine. I have owned many vintage macs, but they all went somewhere, now I want to repair old macs and keep some of my favorites.

I enjoyed watching this, fabulously presented, and I definitely have workstation envy! Getting ready to re-cap my freshly purchased IIsi. Wanted one for years, so will be doing this before I plug it in instead of blowing it up! Saw a video recently that shows the unused third terminal on the speaker housing to drive a HDD LED, so may adapt mine with a bi-colour LED for this too!

Just successfully finished recapping my IIsi power supply, great reference! As this was my first power supply recap I did my plug test outside with a fire extinguisher though ;-) Thanks!

Nice video with the lovely scope. But I have to say the twist method is fantastic with no damage to the board at all. The legs break off the cap and remain on the board

Great video as always Bruce. I’ve done one of these before and now I'm working on another IIsi project for a friend. The one I'm currently working on is a different model PSU. It is a MagneTek 3231-05-001, Apple pn 699-0567. This type is a pain in the neck as the outside case is held together by rivets which have to be drilled out to open it. There are the same problem area of caps that have leaked everywhere, but different values and such (had to make a diagram for myself). I'm Curious if you’ve ever recapped this type? I'll let you know how it turns out after I order some caps that I don’t have in my stock.

I just got a IIsi with this power supply. I ordered caps for the Sony before finding I had the Magentek PSU. How did yours go? Did you happen to make a list of caps you could share?

Hi Bruce! Nice video, as usual. I’ve noticed there’s no SE/30 analog board page in your website. I have three SE and two SE/30 analog boards to recap an I would love to hear your recommendations.

Hi Gonçalo, I'm currently working an an SE & SE/30 power supply recapping vid. The rest of the analog board doesn't usually need much work, but the power supplies certainly need doing.

Hello Bruce, do you know how to remove the coating applied to UK iMacs? It’s on both sides and just turns to goo when soldering iron touches it.

I have one that needs recapped but the issue is the board is very corroded and some of the etching is coming off. Any ideas? I can send a pic. Thanks

Is there any way to test this power supply wihout attaching it to a IIsi motherboard? I guess it needs a jumper or something to power up like the ATX power supplies do?

I'm always concerned about loosening the wrong parts and blowing them away. Do you have an opinion on the technique of cutting apart the SMD caps with a sharp pair of snips, leaving the pins to be desoldered individually?

I'm having a very hard time finding the schematic for the APS-06M, anyone have a link?

Question for you. Did you throw the main board in the ultrasonic bath as well?

I did, but there are a few issues associated with that, so I don’t really recommend it as a course of action.

I'm about to do one of these power supplies and a IIsi logic board. Is it not good to clean the board before doing work like this?

Maybe it'd be better to make a socket for that daughter card, once you've gone to the trouble of taking it out the first time?

I guess the hope is that it won’t need to be removed again!
