I'm with you on preferring turn based to action combat, but I appreciate that the Dragon Quest series has a wide variety of styles throughout the spinoffs

Oooo, this seems so fun. Using the classic DQ monster pals as an open-world traversal mechanism is brilliant.
It's funny that you bring up the whole "only one line out of a whole paragraph of dialogue being voiced thing" some games do, it always makes me feel like the game is bugging out, or gives me flashbacks of trying to play scratched up discs as a kid xD
Three cheers for a decently-sized readable font, though! That really needs to be a mandatory feature across all games
Lucky to have any voice acting in DQ. Originally DQ 11 only had voices in the English version.

Hello, Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley are about farming so they might have something there. Final Fantasy XIV Online has the Botanist profession as optional content. The plot includes topics like invasive and non-native species amongst other things.
Breath of Fire 2 had a plant based playable character, and I would recommend checking out the first Nier as the rose growing side quest utilized a lot of crossbreeding to get a specific color.

Hi David! This the first I've heard of this game. I am a huge DQ fan; it's one of my favorite rpg series of all time (DQ8 being my #1). DQ Treasures looks like a lot of fun. I agree with you that it's too bad that you can't set your monsters' AIs. But still, I am going to keep my eye on this one!

No, that is NOT a Dragon quest MONSTERS game.
@@PisaroOne Oh that is sad as this game began development as a DQM title until the whole treasures spin was put in. Its been 11 years since the last DQM title released in the west :(
This game looks like a "BUY IT ASAFP" type of game, I love monster hunting games and the Dragon Quest Monster series and this game is no exception.
So far, I find the combat slightly clunky but serviceable. However, the world, exploration, and game-loop is utterly satisfying. I adore the world of Dragon Quest and I think this game is a great one for just plucking you down and letting you loose to explore. The typical humour and puns for the series are present and I had some laugh out loud moments with the dialogue and when reading the names of locations and monsters.
This is currently a perfect pairing for the other game I'm currently playing through; Tactics Ogre: Reborn.
The introduction is a bit lengthy and limited in mechanics. I do hope people don't bounce off of it right away and give it an hour or two to get its hooks in.
Good review, this sounds like a game I'll wait to get on sale or when it comes to PS+ eventually.

Although prequels its just not very often we'll get both a new DQ and FF in the same month of the same year right in time for Christmas.. I'm really curious as to which one I'm going to like better.. From the footage of this it reminds me a little of the Ni No Kuni series..
Was considering looking into this after Chained Echoes, but I have some concerns about these "muscle daddy orgies", lol! As someone who adored DQ XI & DQB2, this piques my interest, but seems like it might be a little bit more simplistic than I would like. To be fair, DQ has always been a bit simplistic IMO, but this seems even more so than usual. Think I might just have to wait for the upcoming DQ III 2D/HD remake instead. Now that's a must buy for me! Great vid David!

Seems like they really knew how to take their IP and have some fun with it as a break from their traditional series. That's not something that many franchises can successfully pull off.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this game so far, but I think I would have preferred a proper new entry in the Monsters series.

Very nice review. I guess I’m torn down the middle on this one. Half of the gameplay and action sounds like something I’d enjoy, and the other half sounds like something I may not. So I guess that means wait for a sale on this one. One of the biggest turn offs for me with games, is not having fast travel. I just don’t have enough time to devote to a game that’s going to make me walk everywhere. Who does? Thank you for the review so I know that ahead of time .
It commits one of my greatest rpg sins: enemy level scaling.
Gonna be honest, "...filled to the brim with muscular hot muscle daddies preparing for an orgy..." was not a line of dialog I was expecting to hear coming into this video.

Dragons, floating islands and pulling out daggers - sounds like Tomb Raider II, which just turned 25 a few days ago. I doubt there's a connection, but I thought that was a nice reminder of a great classic game

Sadly yes, but DQ12 dont have a turned base combat system, too when the rumors should be correct...
@@PisaroOne that is where we are heading but if the game is as epic as we know it will all be we will overlook the combat system.

Seems like a mindless kid version of DQ Monsters, with no tactics or even turn based strategy. That seems lame.
What's even the point of getting hints from your monsters when you can just run around and find the glowing spot? Ragnarok does this same shit.
I am a huge dragon quest fan and have been looking forward to this game. However, from what I am seeing, it is a very ugly game. Rough pop-in, poor color grading, bad contrast, washed out, muddy, simplistic geometry and world design. Just looks cheap and uninteresting visually. Dragon quest deserves better than this. Glad to hear that the gameplay holds up at least!

He Dave, i dont know if you know this but DQ’s composer, who is now deceased, was an outspoken homophobe and wanted to influence policy against us. I think you should know that as someone who continues to support the franchise and has over the course of time. Ive made a decision to hold off on anything DQ related for a while until I sort my feelings out on this.
