An American Stonehenge: The Mysterious Georgia Guidestones

- [See pinned comment for an important update.] In a field near Elberton, Georgia, USA, sit a set of mysterious standing stones: mysterious not because they're ancient, but because they were funded by someone anonymous in 1980, perhaps as a message to any survivors of the end of the world.

One bit of information can change a whole story. Years later, it now seems likely -- albeit not certain -- that the Guidestones were commissioned by someone who wrote letters to newspapers praising a neo-Nazi. If I'd known that in 2018, this video would have been very different, or more likely non-existent. This John Oliver segment (starting at 13:33) quotes an obscure 2015 documentary, and sums it up nicely. Take it away, John: ua-cam.com/video/AEa3sK1iZxc/v-deo.html ■ And as of early July, they've been destroyed: see www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/jul/06/georgia-monument-guidestones-americas-stonehenge-bombed
hi Tom, I was the one who sent you the email last night, well done on being so on top of this, literally took 5 hrs or so lmao. did you get a lot of emails about this?
Woah
Damn
Honestly, even if true, I'm surprised he commissioned it with various different languages that weren't European.
Good on ya for losing the smug tone when proven wrong.
If I was one of those survivors, i'd question taking advice from a society that destroyed itself.
gi70st you should observe what the previous civilisation deemed a good idea, and learn from the mistakes. These rocks seem to be a “don’t make the mistakes we made” message.
Like ...philosophy, history and democracy, dumbass? Rome and Greece? We definitely take advice from fallen civilizations dummy.
Unless something else out of space destroyed these civilizations
@@hydraelectricblue We don't take advice and its why history repeats itself. The U.S. fought Hitlers Germany and won just to turn around an elect someone President with the exact same mental mindset and ability to spew words that dumb people will eat up. Most actual civilizations died off due to natural occurrences. Greece, Rome, etc were Empires that fell as all they all do. The last great empire collapse were British in the 70's with the economy collapse they faced putting the U.S. in the position to take over. We became the reserve currency. As far as something on a cataclysmic level wiping out humans that would probably go to the plague. These stones are for when a situation like that happens.
The survivors might see their times society as the ones that destroyed itself and look upon the society of 1980 as a time of peace and wisdom before everything got corrupted.
"Imagine a dozen different monuments, all with different rules, and all being followed by a different group of survivors."
Sounds like a fantastic premise for a science fiction series!
Sounds like religion
I was about to say that this sounds a lot like the world we already live in, but someone beat me to it. And UA-cam hid their comment till I clicked on yours to reply.
They all go to war over which rules should be followed which results in a second nuclear apocalypse, but in the run up to this event some create new revised versions of their own guide stones and the cycle continues in perpetuity.
@@FoxDren Eh, not really. Religion's a complicated thing tied up with culture and history; you couldn't print the Ten Commandments and truthfully call it a summary of everything involved in Judaism or Christianity.
(Also, I don't want this comment chain to go down yet another argument about religion. That's so boring.)
I'd watch that
The Georgia Guidestones were destroyed today. Someone exploded a device at one of the pillars blowing it to pieces. The rest of the monument had to be torn down due to safety concerns.
Some believe it was lightning.
It was not lightning: my sister lives 2.9 miles from there. Lightning would not have shaken her house and caused her to wake up.
@@annethomson4920 I had a friend tell me that last night. I told her the Georgia Bureau of Investigation had already determined it was an explosive and sent her the WSB news article stating that. Plus there is camera footage of a silver car speeding away from the scene. It was not lightening.

It's an odd selection of languages that they chose if they simply wanted to use the most prominent ones in our world: French and Malay would be conspicuously missing if that was the case, while the presence of Hebrew would make zero sense. @@rjfaber1991 Indeed. That's what I was thinking.

Ready for part 2 now that someone blew ‘‘em up…
wish you had gone more into how it works as an astronomical calendar
Why would you build that in Georgia though? The stones might be around in 10k years but it's unlikely they'll be standing or readable. Hurricanes, erosion, pollution and human activity are likely to take a toll on them. It probably would have been a better idea to build them in Nevada or something.
Keep in mind, it says on a plaque that there's a time capsule underground too!
It has been speculated that it was placed were it is near Elberton Georgia because of the relative stability in a moderate environment all the year round with a lowered probability of natural disaster from the likes of hurricane, tornado, wildfire, flood or ,due to the solid granite that spans a large expanse of the ground in the South-East, earthquakes. It is also far from the large population centers of the region so in the event a war it will not be in a direct path of destruction while at the same time it is not too far away from where people might be able to relocate it in the future after a potential cataclysm. Another thing that likely helped due to the shear size of the monument's slabs is what the town of Elberton is known for as the "Granite Capital of the World". Many of the largest and highest quality pieces of granite come from mines in the nearby and likely where the stone was sourced from.
Sorry if that turned into a history lecture but I thought it would be some fun facts to share. I hope you enjoyed!
