As an American married to Singaporean, it took me a while to get used to the curtness of Singaporeans. Can. Cannot. Yes. No. Bye. When I recently went home to visit my folks in California, it was so jarring the friendliness of Americans. Everywhere I went, complete strangers were like "Hey! How's it going? How's your day so far?" and so on. 3 weeks of this and then I came back to Singapore. Back to can. Cannot. Bye. 😂

Im Singaporean living in HK and dated HK guys before. In fact they do send their girlfriends home after a date. Those who don’t want to spend weekends with gf or even send them home after a date are usually the type not serious about the relationship ( same in Singapore too ). Lessons we learn as we grow and Im actually now happily married to a HK guy.
Btw Singaporean guys are more simple minded IMO , where they have a job, CPF taken care of , hence can become complacent with real success. Whereas HK guys are more complex hence can be more exciting coz of the environment they are put in where every man is for himself , unlike Sg guys. Sg guys all go through the same route of National Service, get a gf , get married , get a BTO , raise kids and retire with your CPF. So can be very predictable.
There is no better or worst , it really depends on a girl’s personality as well as to which type of guy style she prefers and if she is one who can adapt herself in foreign land and culture.

Thanks Max for this interesting and introspective interview with Mickey.
As a true breed Singaporean, I have many interactions with Indonesians, both socially and through work and many have become good friends. I resonate absolutely with Mickey, both from an Indonesian and Singaporean standpoint.
Indonesians are by and large friendly, humble, polite and hospitable. Inspite of their immense wealth, they seldom make you feel like an outcaste, both in speech and action. These social graces is examplary of their upbringing.
As for Mickey, I applaud her forthrightness...very candid and yet to the point. The years living abroad has shaped her into who she is today, a confident, articulate and vivacious young woman who is ready to seize the day and live life to the fullest with all her dreams and aspirations.
Live on Mickey! I applaud you👏🫰Welcome to Singapore. I hope you find the love of your life at some point

She is spot on about the living separately after marriage part when the bto is not ready. That's what my younger bro is doing after his marriage.
Singaporeans are pragmatic people..we don't want to waste the money on rent especially if there are other alternatives to explore. Read the recent news that quite a few Singaporean couples choose to have small wedding dinners too. And it has been happening for years already since millennials time.

It is true that for Singapore, Malaysian and Indonesian immigrants are preferred because they can more easily fit into our culture here. The locals are also very familiar with them as our neighbours and more ready to welcome them permanently.
Not that we oppose other foreigners staying in Singapore, but cultural dilution is a real thing, and it will be a pity if Singapore's cultural identity gets lost within a 100 years of our country's history. They are welcomed here if they are willing to accept and blend into the Singaporean's culture.

One of the issue in HK is. People from south east asia whether is chinese race or not, usually dont speak mandarin or the level of Chinese language is low. Unless someone is a profession or doing some job that is not chinese language involved or only the use of english. Any jobs in HK required the use of cantonese chinese language, these people from south east asia could not fit in or they chose to leave. They wont get a good job in hk, unless is expatriate.

Wah as an Indonesian working in Singapore dating a Hong Kong guy, this video hits home 😂 feels good to know that i'm not the only one who prefer living in SG > JKT :' sometimes I feel guilty about it because it's as if I'm being unfilial for not liking to visit "home" as often. Hearing your opinion makes me feel comforted that maybe I'm just being practical about the whole situation, because SG is just safer, cleaner, and overall better live quality compared to being in Jakarta.
I totally agree with your take on the importance of having a hobby outside work! Personally, I do song covers in my free time, and only recently realized not many ppl in SG actually have passion projects. I think it's important to do something beyond your 9-5 job, and totally agree about the part where hobby helps us meet new people! So semangat! jiayous! gayau! continue doing what you like!! Interesting to hear what she feels being minority group in Indonesia is a “uncomfortable situation” and her honest answer that nothing she misses about Indonesia gave me a sad feeling. 😅 just two weeks ago I visited Australia and just on the second day in Brisbane, I experienced a brutal racism shouting on the crowded streets from big white skin fella, while I did nothing wrong at all. My only mistake I guess because I am an Asian look guy with my Indonesian Chinese friends and we were having a good time in Brisbane. You wouldn’t experience that kind of brutal racism act in Indonesia. Btw, I am Indonesian who is living and working in Singapore. Generally “Paiseh” loosely means “to stand on ceremony.” & “Not to impose”
It is related to one’s comfort and politeness levels around others. Especially in social settings.
For eg: 1) a friend comes over to visit. We are about to eat and the host might say “please don’t feel paiseh, just sit and eat whatever we have (as friends / family) and enjoy a good time.”
    2) Another context / situation : I dropped my ice cream on the floor and people were around. It dirtied the floor for others. So I feel “paiseh” and bad for having imposed on others with my slip up.
    3) A guy can also feel “paiseh” to ask a girl out cos he is too shy. He likes her but doesn’t know how to approach her, so feels shy to “impose” on her in asking for a date. It stems from awareness of others through his own lower self esteem as a man.
4th context : I bought something new and it didn’t fit. So as not to bother the store, I feel “paiseh” to return it. I don’t want to trouble others so I keep mum. I am paiseh to create a fuss over the return.
Different contexts above using the word “paiseh” which is in Hokkien - a Chinese dialect.
I stand corrected on the above examples to explain “paiseh”.

A lil idealistic. Money is one of the biggest reasons why people spilt up. Yeah, it’s okay to rent a small place, using money for that. But if the guy earns not enough, they end up fighting, or perhaps u may have enough to rent a place but the guy isn’t around enough due to working multiple streams for such money. Practicality puts food on the table. To quote, ‘in indonesia, husband money is wife money, wife money is wife money.’ But if no money, still use wife money, no money no honey. Maybe one day Indonesia becomes first world and gets to experience first world problems, perhaps there’ll be a shift.

Just saying bye in the MTR somewhat indicate the person just didn't care much about the relationship.

This interview almost means nothing cause, as she stated, this is based on a sample rate of one.
The differences could also come from a different phase of her life. The Jarkarta bf was since high school while the hk bf was after she graduated, meaning when she was 22 or so.
Could also tell she's very inexperienced and child-like as she was giggling like a school girl when he asked her about dating life. I wish I had that innocence.

Living separately until the new apartment is ready is pragmatic, indeed. That's even more pragmatic than dropping you at the nearest MRT station IMO.
In Indonesia, people do differentiate between real close friends & friends friends. We're just more subtle about it, so people don't feel like an outsider.

After watching this episode, i found some similarities among Indonesians like cheerfulness, open minded, dare to express own thinking, nevermind just do it spirit, lets work it out together and softer charater to say no. True enough Indonesians tend to stick within their own group and speak Bahasa, which I do understand, but i find it hard to mingle with. Anyway, live your life to the fullest while you are still single as things will change after you get married and with children, worry about mortgage, utility bills due dates, more expenses or higher living cost, saving getting lesser, more workloads, difficulties to have work life balance, especially when you are into your forties where you are in a senior role. Nevertheless, welcome to Singapore and do upgrade yourself like taking up another part time master degree or sit for professional exams as you will have higher chance to get PR and citizenship.

Time 11:08, Mickey laughed at the fact that couples timed their wedding according to when their BTO flat is ready, aka able to live together after getting married. But then, if the BTO is not ready and they lived separately after the wedding, this is a no-no for her. Hmmmmm...... what is she saying? I don't get her point. I also think that it's best for couples to live together after getting married so timing the wedding to coincide with the BTO seems like the right thing to do. It doesn't mean that the couples get married only because the flat is ready.

    • @jinshensoon2240
      @jinshensoon2240 3 місяці тому +3

Her point is that she cannot accept living a part after getting married if they don't time it exactly with the recent delays. If they are living together, definitely not with either in-laws. It must be their own space aka rental apartments.
Timing BTO in the past isn't a problem as there aren't much delays with the flats, at least not in the months. It is due to COVID that delays of >1 year happened. Additionally, the culture of getting a BTO first before proposal in SG is also weird. Although now a days most couples proposed before applying for BTO, in the past many don't due to them being too young to afford ring + proposal plans. It is better now as younger generations are usually supported by their parents.

What's so hard to understand? She said she'd rather spend money on rent so she can live with her hubby alone (until flat ready), rather than save that money and stay apart. She prefers a normal married life over money, like almost everyone else in the world does lol

@@zhen86 it's a cultural difference, created by the bto policy. In most of the world ppl would simply not consider letting housing decide wedding plans. For non SG ppl it will never make sense, while for SG it's common.
As she said many times, SG ppl are too "practical" with such things compared to other countries. There's no right or wrong here, just different

Sporeans are frogs in a well. The weird things like living apart till BTO is not even done in our parents time. Instead of realising how bizarre we are because of terrible policies, we criticize others for having a normal life.
My BTO was an empty field for 2 years in the 5 yrs it took to collect the keys.
It's a deliberate delay to prop up the resale market, so that desperate couples have no choice but to buy resale.

@@alfianmelodic Oh, I find it especially interesting when you, yourself, are neither Chinese, female, and Buddhist (or any other minority), but you have the audacity to invalidate her feeling as a minority in Indonesia, DUDE. You said that your friend is not like her and not just one person? How many then? Are your friends the representatives of the minority in Indonesia? Even then, why is your friend's feeling valid and hers is not? How do you know that she never tried to blend in with others? How can you be certain that it's just an "individual problem" based on this video and your own perception of your friends feelings only? Do you live with your minority friends 24/7 since you were born, so you know exactly what they are feeling inside out as a minority in Indonesia?
In case you missed it, she is, in fact, a minority in Indonesia, and she has the right to feel as such in Indonesia. And she also never said that she's not doing fine. She (or even all of the minorities in Indonesia) can do fine, live well, but at the same time feels like she doesn't belong in her home country because she is a minority there. Something that you never knew and felt, I suppose, because you simply are NOT the minority.
