We're now 6 years into the future from this video and I found it with my Google Search today, "Do new Porsche's lack soul"? I asked myself this question a lot, and I believe others do too and I was surprised to see that the video author here was asking the same back in the 997.2 generation. 6 months back I decided to take a break from my 2019 991.2 Carrera T, with it's e-brake, it's slightly vague PDK derived 7-speed MT, Electric Assisted Power Steering and it's fake off-throttle burble and test drove in a 2011 997.2 GT3 RS. I was so profoundly moved that 2 months ago, and after a 2nd test drive, I traded in the CT and "moved back" into the 997.2 generation. Lacking soul? Well, no, not in comparison to what Porsche is now delivering. The Hydraulic Assisted Power Steering, the crisp notchy 6-speed gear box, the nice hand e-brake to list just a few, the wonderfully revvy NA''d flat 6, just to name a few, all add to the soul magic of this gen. I also two weeks had a ride in a 2012 997.2 4 GTS and loved it.
Like many, the 997.2 is now revered as the last of the analogue Porsche's and the ones to snap up. Prices are rising. Maybe soul does come at a price... :)
I bought a 997.2 C4 GTS when it was 2 years old with 2000 miles on it, and I still have it in 2023. Lacking soul? Well, it's not for sale, and it won't be either. That's your answer.

the 0-60 on GTS is not 4.4. sec. but about 3.7 sec.
Nothing has more soul than a 911! And Porsche is in a whole other league than Aston
i love the 911 i dont care what people say its a piece of art and performance , i take this over an aston martin .

I know the new 991 is in every objective aspect a better car, but i would still go for the 997.
In my opinion it´s quit a bit more emotional.

These videos could be about 3x longer and nobody would complain. As is, there is so much time spent on the obvious bits that nothing of substance or surprise is mentioned

And yet i would have the Porsche.
It is well equipped, but I have a feeling the 997 GT3 RSes (both the 3.8 and 4.0) will be the best of their generation for driver involvement (since the 991 GT3 is very well tempered and PDK) and rarity.
I do like the GTS approach to make popular options vaguely affordable and look forward to a 991 equivalent. Though, TBH, I'd go for a Cayman R.

"you've got some aero tweaks at the front.. little air dam from the GT3" - No. This is the Aerokit front bumper cover. Not as aggressive as the GT3 but slightly 'sportier' than the standard Carrera front.
"Porsche tweaked the suspension [for the GTS]" - not really. It's the regular Porsche PASM package with SPASM as an option.
Some people see the GTS as a hybrid GT3/Carrera but it is 100% a Carrera with a solid option package and of course the wider rear on both the RWD and AWD variants. After doing my own research on the GT3 vs Carrera GTS I've learned that besides the tub and interior bits there are more differences than similarities between the GT3 and GTS. Both are great cars and you can even fit some GT3 bits to the GTS to make it that much more track capable but, make no mistake, they are very awesome but very different cars.

Like you said, there are so many great cars gunning for the 911 now, that actually the 911 is no longer the no brainer it use to be. Meaning it's rivals are actually really worth buying over the 911.

I would bet the 2WD version has the little bit extra he's looking for. The slightly less weight and tail happy nature would give it an edgier feel (which isn't to say faster).
My next car purchase will be a 997. I'm considerably more drawn to the 2WD versions for their hooligan nature (my favorite car is the GT3 911). That's not to say I don't love and respect the 4WD machines, it's just that for my tastes I prefer 2WD.
You have a point but you do have to keep in mind that price, power and speed doesn't make a car great. The 911 is viewed as one of the best drivers cars out there because if its handling and feel.

There are purists and there are poseurs.Purists usually own their Porsches,hold on to them for many years,know n drive every great canyon road within 100 miles, take care of their Porsche better then they do their own children or wives;^)When it comes time to sell,trust me,it's a heart breaker.Then there are poseurs like this who rent a car for 2 days and suddenly knows he wouldn't feel a"pang of guilt" when selling it. Well,how could he without the risk,blood,sweat,n tears it takes to earn it?

XCAR I love your videos very much but please dial down the compliments that seem overly used in literally every video reviews. This 997 Carrera 4 GTS is no doubt a good car but that's all it is "a good car". It isn't considered by anyone the best 997, nor is it anything outstanding. It is a porsche and it is a entry level to exotics so be more realistic with the comments and not exaggerate the car too much as it is beginning to seem like you're praising the car for endorsement purposes.

Xavier Jones Agreed--when you pay what you do for a 911 you expect many of the "options" to be "standard." JLW
+Xavier Jones Because this is a racing/daily car, and when you use it for travel (yes people do use there 911 to travel) putting +600Km in one day, some levels of comfort are welcome. Imagine a super loud bike, would you travel through Europe with it? Regards
There are alot of substitutes for this car in the market and looks better and handles better with much extra HP for the same price, and 911 shape and face lifts started to become boring as all the generations looks the same
