    Glow plugs! So basically operates up to 60 watts. 10 of them could be used to make a 600w stove. How about a small kiln or furnace? A tiny oven. A device for keeping a cup of tea warm. If one had a length of copper pipe, one could insert a glow plug every few inches and pump water through it and it would heat up. If one had an alcohol stove, the glow plug could be used to vapourise the alcohol which would raise its presure to go through a nozel where it mixes with air to produce a non oderous blue flame. Where there were heavy freezes they could be used to supply a heat to keep pipes from freezing. The soldering iron idea is best.

      Great ideas. The frozen water pipe idea is great.

    You absolute legend. Been trying to get around to sussing out a portable soldering iron for some time.

    Add on a small buck converter to control the voltage / temperature. They are so cheap for a 12v to 2-9v

    Nice! Very creative use. They seem like a cheap easy to get heating element for many other applications.

    Bloody awesome. It seems every soldering iron I've ever bought has gone bad after a couple of uses. I'm definitely making one thanks

    Why did I ever buy a soldering iron mate. Well done. Love it.

    i first came across your channel because of your kiln build, i was looking for ideas to reduce the cost of a lost wax casting setup, and a burnout kiln is an expensive part of that to buy. another expensive part (though not essential, especially considering the price of some of them) is an electric wax carving pen (basically a variable low temp soldering iron) and this looks like it could make a nice one of those!

    Is that a perpetual motion wrench on the wall?

    I have a few butane powered soldering irons and they are super handy, these glow plugs would be perfect for a waste oil burner i want to build. Or a steam engine if i had a few of them

    I know someone else suggested it, but a mini kiln would be cool/ useful for those trying to make a shop on a budget. Could also use the glow plug in the hotend of a high flow 3d printer. Could also put it inside a stirling engine to power it with electricity. Or use it in the next iteration of the diy air conditioner.

    If you know the voltage and current going in could you work out the resistance of the glow plug? I assume that would change as it heats up so you could control the temperature by aiming for the right resistance.

    Pedant mode: It’s a Die and those are nuts not bolts
    Interesting use of a glow plug though, thanks for posting.

      Just a thought I had seeing how simple it was when tapped. Do you think it would be plausible to use them as heating elements ( maybe a preheating chamber & extruder) in a diy 3D printer?

    12 volt short duty, 3 volts to 5 volts it should last a while, higher it might be to hot and will not last.
    Must admit I never thought of using one and saw dozens of them thrown out.
    A wooden handle would be a lot better, but as my father a,ways said "Use what you have and you will never stick!"

    Does it produce any voltage when heated by an external source of heat?

      Good que, ThermoElectricGenerators do that but when there is a temperature difference (a cold side and a hot side)

  • @TerryGilsenan
    @TerryGilsenan 2 роки тому

    that is excellent. I have a couple of mini soldering iront that work on 19v+, but this seems to be much more versatile. with a thermistor and some mosfets, this could be an amazing temperature controlled iron, for cheap, and very robust. and the portability: 6v, 12v, 24v.. etc
    I love it.

    Wonder if you could punch a hole through a piece of aluminum? Al ~ 900C, glow plug 850 to 1100 deg C... hmmm

    yay for 12v glow plugs.. did people know if you strip them down you can quickly melt thin aluminium, use a carbon powder -burned bread- block to make small self contained -conductive ink localised preheated/slow cooling inner/outer sleeved- mold's... even small run 3d aluminium printing for the diy adventure with diy aluminium can string as the free base material ,filmed & linked here if you give it a go -to make better one off upgrade parts etc-

    Mains connectors are 5 amp, 15 amp, 30 amp which are the most common. I've never come across a 3 amp (although there are 3 amp fuses mind which are common). You said 3 amp I think, but they looked like 15. Not that I wish to be pedantic or anything :)
    Great video as always though Robert. Thank you!

    if you cant get glow plugs just get a T12 iron tip about £12 for 4 and you dont have to use a copper nail

    YOU CAN MAKE AN AUTOMOTIVE SMOKER THAT CHECKS FOR VACUUM LEAKS, IN A PICKLE JAR WITH OLD SOCKS SOAKED IN BABY OIL WITH 2 TUBES IN WITH A AIR PUMP AND OUT TO THE VACUUM LINE OF A CAR INTAKE OR EVAP SYSTEM TO FIND LEAKS.

    That's a good idea and with glow plugs you also make a spot welder with it and just put the positive and negative on one side or positive on the other but then you could just do that with a couple of pieces of wire what the glow plugs would make it look cool

  • @Kiyarose3999
    @Kiyarose3999 2 роки тому

    What am I missing, the Negative contact point didn’t seem to have a wire that goes to the battery, I could only see 1 wire from the positive top section.

      When he rotated it you could see the blue wire between the washers and run up the back of the plug, later he covered it with capton tape

    Hi Robert, I tried this and it does work. I went to Ebay and ordered a glow Plug for a Dodge Freight liner Diesel made by (Bapmic Germany) # BACB57-202001.OE# 0250202045OR 05080046AA OR 05080047AA, for the NUT and thread, I found that an M10 -100 thread, (ACE Hdw) screwed right on, no re-threading needed, and a 3/8" flat washer.and a ring connector for the gnd. I used the female side of a 2 piece connector for the + end. just my 2 cents worth, hope it helps someone who wants to make this, without having re-threading equip.

    Nice theft from YT where it has been done about twenty times before you "came up with it" ! However if you have to buy the various things you showed to build it you would spend more than when you would buying a decent soldering iron. And it still would look very crappy! 😂

    That’s great, as soon as I come across a glow plug I can stop using my portable Gas Soldering Iron, that uses fossil fuel, that I hate having to use! Thanks for this, will be one of my first projects, after I’ve finished constructing my work surface/area.
