  • SHADOW LAPSE is a site-specific/site-generated video projection for an interior or exterior environment where people may pass, repose, or socialize. The interplay between physical space and the unique day/night light/shadows are captured and activated to become the components of the art. The viewers experience an immediacy of place while being suspended between multiple time-lines and are immersed in the projection. Passers-by may contribute to the day-time shadows, and night-time viewers may interact with the night-time shadows. The installation is presented in various unique locations and times, as editions in a series.
    See here the three-part demonstration of the site-specific/site-generated projection mapping installation.
    Part 1: Connors House, the first field execution and proof-of-concept of the piece away from its Patiolab studio home;
    Part 2: Previz Patiolab, a Madmapper output previsualization in the early stages of the work's development;
    Part 3: Patiolab, the in-studio execution of the piece started on a day with company and patchy clouds.
    Music by Amadou Fall.
    Run time: 5:41

    The visual content of the Shadow Lapse editions is primarily time-lapse videography capturing the shadow-play of the space over the course of several hours. The shadows of trees on a building, light-posts, architectural features or people passing during the course of the day, are captured in the arc created by the sun's movement. With Madmapper software the video is projected back into the space later, after dark, and mapped precisely to the dimensions thereof. The night shadows created by streetlights are now interwoven with the shadows of the day. Multiple layers are looped at different speeds. Viewers have the sensation of viewing and participating in the previous day in multiple, overlapping time-lines. Additionally, texture layers appear to suggest the existence of a different dimension hidden by the day light.
    The process of production begins in the specific space early in the day, to capture the shadow play in time-lapse videography, during which time projection equipment is installed. Editing and preparing the video material are done on-site.
    The projection, and all of the component layers and variations continue in fluid rhythms for at least one hour, until the end of the scheduled exhibition, or when the sun rises in the morning.
