In my mind, you play it exactly as it's transcribed. I'm learning this piece and will use this as a reference. Thanks. I first heard the song in a show called "Midnight Diner".

What a lovely view you have as you practice the piano! Assuming that's your own view, that is.

Not my own view, unfortunately. The video was recorded at Hellens Manor in Herefordshire.

O my...this is heavenly music. Im studying this piece for guitar and been listening to people playing this on guitar but this really blows my mind. Now im torn between playing this piece on piano or guitar, or maybe on both?

You study the doctrine of salvation? Vocationally or avocationally?

I’m learning this for my grade 6 but my teacher keeps hammering me on how I shouldn’t use the pedal as it’s not in the original score. It sounds so much better this way! Does anyone know whether you can still use the pedal or is it strictly not allowed?

Your teacher is right that pedalling is not in the score, but the piece was written for the harpsichord, which didn’t have a sustaining pedal, so I don’t think that is a reason for not using pedal at all if you are playing Scarlatti on a modern instrument. It is of course very important not to over-pedal music of this period. Clarity is essential and the musical lines must never be blurred. But modern pianos can sound very dry, in contrast to earlier keyboard instruments whose dampers are much less effective. Harpsichords and very early pianos have a natural resonance and never sound dry! You can match this resonance in a slow piece like the Scarlatti Sonata by using very subtle pedalling, changing on every note, which releases harmonic resonance in the other strings of the piano. I agree with you that this sounds better, and I also think that very light pedalling is also a more authentic way to replicate the natural resonance of a harpsichord.

@@williamhoward6142What an enlightening, but more important, kind response to the young student.
      I salute you.
