The Andromeda Strain (1971) Trailer

  • The Andromeda Strain is a fantastic 70's sci-fi movie, directed by Robert Wise who brought us 'The Day the Earth Stood Still', 'Run Silent, Run Deep', and 'The Haunting'. It was also the first film to be adapted from a Michael Crichton novel.
    Thought I'd keep my editing skills in shape by editing a shiny new trailer for it.
    In response to questions about the music, there are two songs used in this trailer, both from the soundtrack to Danny Boyle's 'Sunshine' (2007):
    Track 06: Kanada's Death, Pt 1
    Track 14: Capa Suits Up

    ...So you’re telling me that this is a fan made trailer, using footage from the actual 1971 film? Wow. My hats off to you sir. I just watched the original 1971 trailer, and your version would not be out of place for anything made today.

    I saw this movie when it was new and really liked it. Then, in 1978, I was going through an incredibly traumatic episode in my life when a friend came over late one night and drug me out to a movie. This was showing as a midnight movie and I remembered liking it, so it was where we ended up. Even though I had seen it before, the suspense and tension got me out of my own head and into the movie. When we left, I felt my despair settling back on me, but because of that break, I knew I was going to get through my problems and things would be good again. The movie has always held a special place in my heart.

    I'm glad to learn from all these comments that this movie does, actually, have a following. It's just so earnest to what it tries to do. Martin Scorsese once discussed Robert Wise reputation for not imprinting his own stylistic choices onto a movie, but to let "story dictate style". Other directors became famous for a distinctive style of their own: you can watch one minute of 2001 and one minute of the Shining, and instantly be reminded that they were directed by the same person, and critics said this wasn't true of Wise. Scorsese replies that Wise did exercise directorial control of which stories he chose to film, and that's where he made his personal stylistic choices. I look at movies like this one, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Run Silent Run Deep, The Body Snatcher, Star Trek I, The Haunting, The Sand Pebbles, the Haunting, West Side Story and the Sound of Music, all of the Wise films I've seen, and what does tie them together is a strong moral sense, a sense of collective responsibility for moral good, in the face of the calamities of war, ignorance, the unknown. I love his movies, so.

    When I watch this film, I am transported into their nightmare of dealing with this "Hellish Thing", they all are so good in this. When they see how Andromeda cannot survive in the narrow range of blood types, I relaxed, the mention of the rat exposed, and alive. Andromeda has mutated to a non infectious form. Then the danger escalates, Arthur Hill sees the gaskets melting, it mutated to a whole other monster. The actors are SUPERB. The script, SUPERB. Whoever did casting on this film nailed it.

    I actually saw this two years later on television in the 70s when I was little. It's haunted me since. All I can say is thank God for Google and u tube. I finally got the movie title. I asked movie 70s end if world baby old man...it came up with this. I watched the trailer and yep..the crying baby..the old man and ...and . .the man getting a needle or punch in the arm from a torch with a light. That's how I remember it...the trailer showed all three.. I can relax now...andromeda strain...freak out.

      drjules888 a What I left out, and like, is that Crichton was disgusted with his classmates and people at Harvard.
      Suddenly people wanted to sit next to him in the cafeteria. He questioned them saying he wasn’t interesting to them before and they are interested now because... because he is famous/novelist/best-selling novelist?
      To be fair a *LOT* of us are like that when we meet famous people, but he makes a good point about those he already knew.

      Missing context. On average about 98.2% of known COVID-19 patients in the U.S. survive, but each individual’s chance of dying from the virus will vary depending on their age, whether they have an underlying health condition and whether they are vaccinated. While people who are vaccinated can still get infected, these “breakthrough” cases are rare and vaccines dramatically reduce severe illness and death.

Well done, for video/audio capture, for piecing together snippets and events that are simultaneously misleading and accurate, and making a good soundtrack (I'm still partial to Gil Meleé's electronic work, but you made good use of your own selections). Given the film itself, your effort is to be applauded most vigorously. Very well done.

    Firstly I'll say I have a soft spot for SciFi films.
    The science fiction films released in the late 60's and early 70's had a certain class about them and maybe not that far fetched.
    The Andromeda Strain (WMD's anyone), 2001 A Space Odyssey (people landed on the moon a year after the release of this film in '68), Colossus The Forbin Project ( computers with few well placed viruses shutting down banking and the security of countries) and Solaris, the Russian version not remake( ok not much of this has happen, but still looks good : ) ).

      @emilyn12 10 років тому

      Guess what. I saw that movie I don't even remember how many times. And obviously, I have the book. And 2001 Space Odyssee remains one of my best Stanley Kubrick's film (with "The Shining"). I 've got on Google books a kind of diary written in the early 70' concerning the filming of "2001", with drawing, and remarks. Very interesting.
      I still enjoy sci-fi from the 50' with the kind of paranoïd atmosphere. :-)

    • @lawlers69
      @lawlers69 10 років тому

      emilyn12 The book you talking about is "The Lost Worlds of 2001".
      It's funny you should mention that, I'm sitting here looking at copy of it sitting on my bookshelf, it was hard too track down, got a copy from a bookshop in Adelaide South Australia.
      The book gives fans of book or film an insight into what their ideas were and how they changed over time.
      The different ending they had and why they couldn't use them was good.
      Arthur C Clarke wrote a book called "How The World Was One" all about mass communications, it worth a read if you can find it :- ).

      This music is not from the movie / film. As you can read it says: Danny Boyle's 'Sunshine' (2007). This trailer is from The Andromeda Strain (1971), and the composer of that movie is Gil Melle. But the music (these two songs) you're hearing are from the album Sunshine (year 2007, as discribed). The album, from 2007 with these 2 songs, are composed by John Murphy. That's why it sounds ahead of it's time, because it's not from that time (1971). These 2 songs are from the movie (and soundtrack) Sunshine: Danny Boyle is the director, and John Murphy is the composer (Cillian Murphy is one of the actors in the movie). I hope there's no confussion anymore?

      No, it's neither a original trailer, nor the actual music.
      But this movie is still a masterpiece of SciFi.

      .No. It's not the original score. The score for this film is fantastic and just as timeless as the film, itself!

    I'm reading the book now. Michael crichton really has a gift for writing books that get adapted into a movie. Read the jurassic park and lost world books. Completely different from the movies, highly recommend reading the books if you like the movies.

    Such a good film, Crichton is a real nerd when it comes to facts, figures and the actual science of sci- fi. The film portrays the cold emotionless decision makers of the world perfectly. well worth reading or watching.

    Very well done. Clean edits, well paced, music fits beautifully and it fits the "atmosphere" of the film. It's not "in your face", but neither was the movie.
