  • Is it appropriate to treat patients with M.S. using hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
    Yes.
    But not because it's a treatment for the disease.
    It’s because of the mechanisms of action of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
    When you understand the mechanism of action of hyperbaric oxygen therapy as well as the pathophysiology, the etiology of the disease or condition, you can determine if it makes sense to apply this therapy for this person.
    In the case of M.S., it does make sense.
    But we have to be careful because it's a disease of oxidized fat or oxidized myelin.
    And because hyperbaric oxygen therapy does have the tendency to increase oxidation, we want to slowly introduce this person to HBOT to make sure the patient appears to be tolerating the therapy well. After a few exposures at mild pressures, we can go up to higher pressures.
    We want to stimulate oxidation in a safe way.
    If we stimulate oxidation safely, we start increasing the body's ability to handle oxidation. It's that hormetic effect.
    And as we do that, we start to stimulate superoxide dismutase, glutathione, and catalase, the chemicals inside our body that protect us from oxidation.
    As we expose this patient slowly to hyperbaric oxygen therapy over time, we know that increasing their capacity to tolerate oxidation through HBOT actually helps them handle the oxidation in their exterior environment as well.
    Because M.S. is an autoimmune disease, patients typically suffer from lots of inflammation. We know that hyperbaric oxygen therapy helps reduce inflammation in the body by reducing inflammatory cytokines, increasing the body's anti-inflammatory cytokines, and it creates balance in the inflammatory response inside the body.
    Most patients with autoimmune diseases benefit from hyperbaric oxygen therapy because of that immune system balancing. Not because it's a treatment for autoimmunity, but because it has an effect in helping to keep the immune system more regulated, which leads to a lower level of inflammation in people who are chronically inflamed, especially those with autoimmunity.
    Multiple sclerosis patients usually experience a down regulation of the mitochondria. So the cell signaling and the ATP production inside those damaged nerves starts to become reduced.
    Hyperbaric oxygen therapy increases mitochondrial function and all these areas of damaged nerves and brain tissue as we upregulate mitochondrial function, we can upregulate ATP. As we do that, the cells become alive again and they start to do their job and perform their functions at a much higher level.
    With multiple sclerosis there’s a breakdown of myelin (an insulating layer, or fatty sheath that forms around nerves, including those in the brain and spinal cord). So there’s a deterioration in the central nervous system.
    Hyperbaric oxygen therapy stimulates neurogenesis and neuroplasticity.
    When there’s any type of damage to the neurological system of our body, hyperbaric oxygen therapy has the ability to help heal the nerves, build new synapses, build new connections between neurons and help neurons heal along with bringing the central nervous system stem cells into the area for improved healing.
    It has this whole neurogenic effect, this healing and recovery of nerve tissue that is possible through repetitive exposures to hyperbaric.
    Again, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is not a direct treatment of multiple sclerosis. But when used safely and appropriately, M.S. patients can experience great results with HBOT.

    This is the 1st I have heard if this. My husband had me read an article about it and led me here. I will certainly give it a try and start low and work my way up, if all goes well. 😊
    Thanks so much for bringing this knowldge to us! It makes sense to me. ❤

    The immune system attacks its own Myelin .. Myelin damage
    In MS, immune cells attack myelin and the cells that make it. When myelin is damaged, it can accumulate, exposing nerve fibers to oxidative stress. This can cause a breakdown in nerve signal transmission, which can lead to neurological symptoms characteristic of MS.

    I am getting a soft 1.4 atm chamber delivered soon. My wife has MS for 25 plus years. Should I start 1 hour per day 3 times per week, and increase days every week until she has 40-60 sessions.? Looking for a protocol to follow

    What are your thoughts on Hyperbaric Air Therapy (simulated scuba diving at depth) would be similar? Basically, diving to pressure of 2 to 2.5 atmospheres without the introduction of 100% oxygen..."diving" at the equivalent of 50% oxygen.

    • @HBOTUSA
      @HBOTUSA  Рік тому

      It depends but generally speaking we start low (1.3) and build up higher if needed. But would rarely go about 1.75 for something like this. Many treated lower at 1.3-1.5

    Doctor you said that hbot has tendency to oxidase,what does it mean clinicly? Does it mean that hbot could make symptoms worse?
    Cheers

      Great question! Yes HBOT is an oxidative therapy, and many of the benefits are related to that oxidation. This video goes into a little more detail about HBOT and oxidation: ua-cam.com/video/-l4x_CH97XE/v-deo.html

    Does 35% food grade H2O2 supply oxygenating benefits as hyperbaric oxygen therapy? I have heard of diluting it a glass of water, starting with 1 drop in water and increasing to up to 25 drops in a glass of water.

    • @HBOTUSA
      @HBOTUSA  2 роки тому

      Unfortunately not. Hyperbaric oxygen changes the pressure of oxygen inhaled leading to a significant increase in oxygen absorption. Without changing the pressure of the gas you cannot increase tissue oxygenation much at all.

    Hello,
    How does EWOT (Exercise with Oxygen Therapy) comes into picture compared to HBOT?
    I cannot afford and I am not in US for HBOT.My doctor mentioned EWOT may be something that will help me. Can you help me with this?

    • @HBOTUSA
      @HBOTUSA  2 роки тому

      Something is better than nothing! But they don't really compare. HBOT has the ability to deliver much more oxygen, because it bypasses the red blood cell carrying capacity. We have an older video on our channel that describes the difference: ua-cam.com/video/oVEBVNo9SkI/v-deo.html

    I did about 32 hours of diving at 1.5 ata and unfortunately I have some flair of my ms. whole left side of my body is i bad condition,Im starting to worry,maybe hbot is not for me or something... Doctor please tell me,should I continue treatment? I don't feel any improvements,maybe it's to early? I have been told this could be some healing crysis or something... But I'm not some convinced...

    Show us the studies.

    • @HBOTUSA
      @HBOTUSA  2 роки тому +5

      There is very little research on this topic directly. In fact, unfortunately there has been little money or interest in large studies for hyperbaric research used in off label cases. The majority of studies for hbot and MS we’re done in the 80’s. There study designs were flawed and the protocols used were inconsistent and as a result the results were mixed some positive some neutral. None that showed negative consequences. When we decide to apply any therapy off label we do that because we have a firm understanding of the pathology and the mechanisms of action of the therapy and it is our clinical judgement that we use to make sure this would be a safe and likely effective direction for the patient. One of the main reasons some appropriate therapy is still considered off label is because there is not enough research yet to fill support and approve the therapy. When I teach our hyperbaric certification courses we dig deep into the mechanisms of action because that is where high quality clinical decision making comes from.
