    I have only been canning for 8 months. With your help and advice, I am off to a great start. You introduced me to the jar boxes. All my stuff is in jar boxes. And now you've introduced me to the inventory. Now I'm inventoried. Thank you.

    Linda, you have taught me so much. For example I started canning 3 years ago and watched and learned to can meat, dried beans, soups, etc. Not having anyone in my family that canned you were a great help. Needless to say, keep making canning videos. Thanks 😊

    Great video! Please keep the canning, dehydrating and your canned product recipes coming. Many years ago, when my children were small, I used to do a lot of canning and somehow I put it on the back burner, even went so far as to give my jars away. Now I am back to the hobby and having to re-learn all the new research information. You are a good teacher who uses reliable information. I absolutely cringe when I see wrong methods and information being passed along to us, and especially, new canners. How to turn them away from the hobby with a failure or two in one or two easy careless lessons. Your attention to detail, using the right tools and cleanliness, and your humor even when things go wrong, is most appreciated! I always feel you are talking with us not down to us.

    YES keep the canning videos coming. You've inspired so many to start canning again, as a child we helped our mom and aunts can and freeze and make tons of homemade tamales. I talk about my canning and homemade wine making at work a lot and so many of them have started doing it just because I talk about it, and it's so much fun at the end of a session to see all of these pretty jars of food that you spent your time and effort to preserve.... and nothing more exciting than to hear that PING!!!

    Here's my thought on inventory...I painted the top of my freezer with chalkboard paint and I write what goes in and how many, then when I remove, I erase the tick mark. So, I would put up a whiteboard, perhaps, to keep track, with tick marks of how many or just the number. Or maybe those overhead projector sheets - plastic, with your pretty printed sheets underneath and use erasable pens. My thinking is that some of the lines will be changed faster than others and then you'll end up with multiple pages...I'm explaining this quite badly. I love, love, love inventory.....it appeals to my Virgo heart, but I usually find that I end up writing & re-writing and re-writing. Erasable makes me happy. Anyway, a suggestion for you from someone who gets quite excited about organizing and inventory. :)

    Great info on how to keep things organized! I love to use the containers especially when I have to transport some of my home canned goods. It really keeps the jars safe in the car. I also just love my binder because it keeps my pantry really organized (thanks for the mention). I find it especially helpful for the food I have in my chest freezer. I don't forget about anything in there that way. I'm going to add a "Need to Can" section....that's a great idea! Thanks for sharing yours.

  • @JNB1115
    @JNB1115 8 років тому +1

    A couple thoughts.
    1. Number each canning case and make a chalk or dry erase map of each box so that you know where to find things. Ex. Cream of chicken in box 3 and when you remove it, erase on the map so you know where you have an empty space in box 3. With this you could create initials for each thing you can. Ex. Cream of chicken could be COC or COM for cream of mushroom.
    2. On your inventory, I likes how you did different sheets for meats/beans, veggies, and fruits, but you could also write things in alphabetical order so it's easier to find when crossing off.

    When I am storing full jars, I just use one half of the jarbox. they will still stack if you just use the "bottom" of the jarbox and you can see what is in the jars. You really don't want to stack them very high when you do it that way. I just found your videos so I am having a marithon watching them. :)

    This is genius - One of my favorite uploads of yours (not to discredit the rest, they’re all great) ... when it comes to storage, it’s important to remain organized (essential w/ an inventory, if you’re a frequent canner)
    The cardboard boxes, they’re great for separating jars (sizes) ... but the cardboard makes me a bit nervous - grain worms, particularly ... they LOVE cardboard ... err, which is why I don’t typically buy pastas, cereals, and many other items in bulk (plus, we’re a family of 3, not logical for us)
    Back to cardboard, and those pesky grain worms ... we had them once (ONCE) .., it was about 20 years ago .... was SUCH a nightmare, I swore I’d NEVER become a victim of that again (ev’ar) ... side note: they’re most often imported (within the packaging) from the grocery store, and/or manufacturers that process/sell to the local grocer
    Last ... your binder/ledger = fabulous idea to keep record of what you have, and what you need to replenish - I need to start doing this!
    Sorry for the novel - I’m long winded [guilty]

    Great video Linda! I used to have the 3 year rule also, but I have researched that canning can last longer. I have used things over the 3 year limit. You have a very good system set up! Hope your garden does great.
